Annually, the Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section hosts the Brian Pockar Male Seminar which focuses on the development of male skaters in their personal journey of . The Pockar Foundation generously contributes to this seminar every year. Thanks to this generous contribution over the past decade many promising young male figure skaters have benefited. The Section will once again host the seminar February 14-15, 2015in Calgary, AB. We are pleased to have Yvan Desjardins from the Section as our seminar leader this year. Yvan has coached skaters from club to international levels. We are pleased to be able to bring Yvan to our Section to work with our male skaters.

Brian Pockar - Member of the Hall of Fame Brian Pockar was an Alberta skater who trained at the Calgary Winter Club and the Glencoe Club under the direction of Winnie Silverthorne. Brian achieved success at the Provincial, National, and International levels as a figure skater. He won a gold medal in figures at the 1976 Junior World Figure Skating Championships, a bronze at the 1981 World Senior Men’s Figure Skating Championships, and, a bronze at the 1982 World Figure Skating Championships. He was the Senior Men’s Canadian Champion three times and also skated competitively in the 1980 Olympic Games. Brian Pockar was the first figure skater to successfully complete a triple one foot salchow/doubleflip combination jump at the World Championships. This outstanding skater was recognized as one of Canada’s best athletes when he was presented with five Alberta Achievement Awards and in 1982 was presented with the Government of Canada Sport Excellence Award.
