Sites of Play: Locating Gameplace in Red Dead Redemption 2 Andrew Westerside University of Lincoln Brayford Pool, LN6 7TS United Kingdom [email protected] Jussi Holopainen University of Lincoln Brayford Pool, LN6 7TS United Kingdom [email protected] ABSTRACT In Video Game Spaces (2009), Michael Nitsche proposes three indicators of ‘placeness’ in video games: identity, self-motivated and self-organised action, and traces of memory (191-201). We read this notion of placeness as closely aligned to, or overlapping with, the understandings of place and site articulated in theatre and performance research as site-specific performance. Here, we articulate the ideas (and analyse the experiences) of placeness and sitedness in Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) through an analytical conversation between performance studies and games design research with a human-computer interaction bias. Through a close- reading of gameplay experiences (Bizzocchi and Tanenbaum, 2011), we individually experienced over 30 hours of RDR2 gameplay while taking notes, recording, and capturing screenshots. During our individual analyses, we met periodically to compare notes, discuss notable game moments and share analytical insights. At this intersection of game research and performance research, we ask to what extent the theoretical articulations of aesthetic/affective experience in physical, corporeal and material spaces can develop – and further nuance – our understanding of how place is experienced (and thus designed) in contemporary videogames. In doing so, we propose the term gameplace as a means of articulating what this article will define as the affective relationship between place, experience and play. Keywords Place, space, placeness, gameworld, gameplay, performance research, phenomenology INTRODUCTION Site-Specific Performance For scholars and practitioners in the discipline, site-specific performance refers to ‘performance conceived on the basis of a place in the real world (ergo, outside the established theatre)’ (Pavis, 1998, p.337).

Without them this dissertation would never have been written. I knew almost nothing about video games before I started this and their patient explanations of things most obvious was greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank my advisor, Dr. Ruth Malone. In 2008, when I sat in my first graduate class, I was not sure if I even belonged. Dr. Malone encouraged me and helped me believe in myself as a person and as a scholar. She opened doors for me that I did not know even existed. Ruth has mentored me for the last eight years, and for this I am honored and grateful. I would also like to thank my dissertation committee, Dr. Ruth Malone (chair), Dr. Kit Chesla and Dr. Roberta Rehm. Their gentle and careful guidance has seen me safely through one of the most challenging journeys of my life. I would like to thank my qualifying exam committee, Dr. Christine Kennedy (chair), Dr. Ruth Malone, Dr. Roberta Rehm and Dr. Susan Kools. Through your expertise and direction this project was shaped into what it is today. I would also like to thank Dr. Lisa Bero and Dr. Donna Odierna. Unfortunately, internal discrepancies are often dismissed as indicators of political ambivalence, or treated as formal flaws that need to be overcome. To address this gap, this dissertation draws from game studies, media studies, and political economics to investigate the contradictory relationships between popular games and neoliberalism, specifically in relation to playful forms of resistance and critique that emerge during gameplay.

williamfry.com/newsandinsights/publications-article/2018/11/13/gimme-the-loot-will-purchases-in-video-games-be- exempt-from-gambling-law-overhaul With a number of jurisdictions increasing regulatory scrutiny of in-game purchases, the Irish Department of Justice has indicated that the planned changes to Irish gambling legislation will not including regulating video game transactions or in-game purchases. Not Just a Game When, in late October 2018, the video game Red Dead Redemption 2 was released it made over €636m in its first three days of sale. Although the figure makes the game the largest media and entertainment launch of 2018, the record for largest of all time is still held by Grand Theft Auto V, made by the same studio, which grossed nearly €1 billion in its opening weekend before going on to become the highest grossing entertainment product of all time. In-Game Transactions However while sales of games themselves have increased substantially, in-game transactions of downloadable content that players can unlock and access by paying in actual currency have also emerged as a billion euro industry. Generally speaking, while many virtual items are strictly cosmetic, not giving the player any advantage when it comes to gameplay, they are often sought out as a way to customise characters. For instance, in early November 2018 the National Football League in the United States announced a partnership with the video game Fortnite to allow the game's 125 million players the opportunity to pay $15 to wear jerseys and team outfits for a limited time. Similarly the CEO of Take-Two, the company behind both the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises, confirmed in November 2017 that going forward the company will "aim to have recurrent consumer spending opportunities for every title that we put out" while Activision Blizzard, the company behind games such as Overwatch, Destiny and Call of Duty, posted profits of €6.28bn they also revealed that over €3.5bn of that came from in-game transactions alone.
