rwanda’s business center: Where East Africa trade flows

Kigali City is quiet and serene, and a place you can take a walk on its streets without particularly bothering with the troubles and more so maddening noise and hooting of cars as normally experienced in a number of cities in East Africa.

However, this face of ambience is shattered immediately you arrive at Cartie Commerciale from any direction. Cartie Commerciale is the French lingo of Kigali down town commercial district. The first thing that attracts your eyes are the huge number of lorries parked to the rafters with goods that line up its bustling and

The streets at Cartie Commerciale are also teeming with people who have come to purchase these goods to take to different destinations in Kigali and the countryside. It is these people that pack this vibrant commercial center, entering and exiting the stores and taking their purchases to waiting vehicles that also dot the sides of the streets.

Walking into the stores that line the busy streets, you discover that the spirit of East Africa Community is alive in this busy section of Kigali City. The goods found here is a mosaic of the immense wealth of this vast region of over 140 million people.

Boxes of products from some of the major Kenyan industrial giants such as Bidco or Unilever can be found side by side by the goods manufactured by the Ugandan conglomerate Mukwano. Agricultural products such as tea, fish and bananas from neighboring Uganda are traded easily alongside truckloads of plastic products, foodstuff and or rice from Tanzania.

Talking with the traders reveals just how much they have come to cherish the East Africa Community integration process. A number of them say that their businesses have grown in volume since the five East Africa partner states formed the regional bloc.

Cultural, social integration a sustainable way to regional unity

By Penina Asiimwe

The wind of Regional integration has been sweeping across all African countries from the mid nineties. And it goes without saying that Rwanda – the land of a thousand hills – has gladly jumped onto this bandwagon and as such the country which is geographically landlocked is now land-linked.

To-date, aside from the all encompassing African Union, each African country has a choice of belonging to at least a regional bloc.

Rwanda belongs to three regional arrangements: Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC). It is however, more deeply integrated with the EAC especially because of signing both the Customs Union and Common Market Protocols.

Rwanda’s main aim for joining the EAC was to capture economic, social and political In big and historical integrations like benefits associated with regional the United States of America (USA), and integration.
