The March chilly wind and temperatures did not keep them away that early Saturday morning. Most people who came use this park came with their families…they want future generations to be able to benefit from it. Others belong to environmental groups who protect the bay and beach. American beach grass, a plant native to the area, forms a system of roots beneath the dunes in order to stabilize them. The dune system of Island Beach still is recovering from the damage caused by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. One volunteer from Cheltenham, PA, about 70 miles away, is quoted saying, “It is really important to protect the coastal resources we have.” “I looked at the areas that I planted last year, and the plants are still growing there and thriving”. Another volunteer, who brought along her whole scout troop, said she had never heard of dune grass before. “It was like what is dune grass and Jeff’s Powerwashing why do we have to plant it?” “I thought it just grew”, was heard from another volunteer from Eatontown.
