    Cold Open: The Jersey Devil. Is it a kangaroo-like creature with the head of a goat, horse, or dog? Most agree that it has wings, hooves, horns, and a tail. Where does it come from? Many describe a dragon-like creature. Or does it walk on two legs like others have reported? Some say it can fly. Legends say it has killed. It supposedly once survived a cannonball blast. It emits a blood curdling scream. It might be a pterodactyl. It can die and come back. It is almost certainly demonic. It murdered it’s own human mother and some midwives moments after its brith before flying up the chimney. It has a NHL hockey team named after it. There’s a good chance it worked as a roadie on Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness tour in the summer of 1978, handling sound check duties and replacing guitarist Steven Van Zandt’s signature bandana whenever he either sweated through it or when he felt a new bandana was needed to get him in the correct artistic zone to play certain songs, like Born to Run. Okay, I may have made up the Springsteen shit. But the rest of this info does come from historical accounts. So when did the legend of this creature originate? What do people think this creature is?     NJS: An Interdisciplinary Journal Summer 2020 23 The History of the Ferryboat Mary Murray: The Staten Island Ferry That Became a NJ Turnpike Landmark By David Moskowitz, Ph.D. “And my machine she’s a dud, all stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey.”1 DOI: https://doi.org/10.14713/njs.v6i2.212 The Mary Murray ferry was launched in 1937 on Staten Island, NY and would end her storied career seventy-three years later beached and rotting away in East Brunswick, NJ. For thirty-seven years, she plied the waters between Manhattan and Staten Island, NY as part of the Staten Island Ferry system. She was funded by the New Deal during the Depression and was the first New York City ferry named after a woman. Her namesake was Mary Murray, a patriot- heroine during the Revolutionary War. The Mary Murray was purchased at an auction in 1976 by George Searle, a Merchant Mariner with his own storied past who towed the ferry up the Raritan River to NJ with plans to convert it into a floating restaurant. It would remain there for the next thirty-four years until ultimately being scrapped, visible from the NJ Turnpike just north of Exit 9. Such representations have drawn criticism from disability advocates on the basis that they perpetuate stereotypes and inaccurately represent the history of deinstitutionalization in the United States. In 2010, when Pennhurst State School and Hospital, a closed Pennsylvania institution that housed people understood as developmentally/intellectually disabled, was reused as a haunted attraction called “Pennhurst Asylum,” it sparked a public debate and became an occasion for storytelling about what Pennhurst meant to the surrounding community. I apply theoretical perspectives from memory studies and disability studies to the case of “Pennhurst Asylum” in order to understand what is at stake when we remember institutional spaces such as Pennhurst. More specifically, this case study uses narrative analysis of news stories and reader letters, ethnographic observation at the haunted attraction, interviews with key storymakers, and historical/cultural contextualization to examine why this memory matters to disability advocates, former institutional residents and employees, journalists, and other community members. The narrative patterns I identify have ramifications for contemporary disability politics, the role of public communication in the formation of community memory, and scholarly debates over how to approach popular representations of historical trauma.

INTRODUCTION Two thrill ride accidents in July 2013—one involving a woman who fell seventy-five feet to her death from a roller coaster,1 and another involving a log flume that overturned and trapped seven patrons underwater2—placed national attention on the safety of amusement park rides.3 Following the accidents, social media erupted with calls for increased ride safety.4 At the same time, a Kansas waterpark was completing construction on the world’s “tallest, fastest and ‘most extreme’ water slide ever built”5—the Verrückt, which is “German for insane.”6 A target for “adrenaline junkies who are always looking for the * J.D. Bolton, NYC Policy and Practice on Nuclear Weapons Executive Summary New York City is a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone (NWFZ), both as a normative stance and in fact; all nuclear weapons bases within its territory have been decommissioned and the Navy reportedly avoids bringing nuclear-armed and/or -powered ships into the Harbor. This is an impressive achievement, given the City’s role as a key node in the Manhattan Project, as a former base for nuclear missiles and as a nuclear-capable Navy homeport. In 1983, the City Council passed a resolution establishing the City as a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone and prohibiting nuclear weapons from the City’s territory. This background paper provides a historical overview of the development of New York City’s NWFZ and other relevant policy protecting New Yorkers from the humanitarian and environmental consequences of ionizing radiation. It outlines practical efforts taken, including the removal and barring of nuclear weapons from the City limits and remediation of contaminated legacy sites. This is followed by consideration of several challenges facing the NWFZ, including the continued investment of the City’s pension funds in nuclear weapons production, low public awareness of the NWFZ and the Trump administration’s unravelling of constraints on nuclear weapons.
