On the Historical Origins of the Heidelberg Catechism

Strohm ON THE HISTORICAL ORIGINS OF THE HEIDELBERG CATECHISM ABSTRACT Reflection on the origins of the Heidelberg Catechism reveals it to be a document of understanding between Calvinistic-Reformed, Zwinglian and Lutheran-Philippistic tendencies within Protestantism. One important reason for the success of the Heidelberg Catechism was the fact that each one of these groups appreciated the Catechism. At the same time it clearly distances itself from Tridentine Catholicism and from the Gnesio-Lutheran variant of Lutheranism. This occurs mainly in the doctrine of the Lord’s Supper. The repudiation of the mass as “condemnable idolatry” is a result of the orientation to the Reformation of John Calvin. Here papal religion was seen as superstition and a fundamental violation of the true worship of God as well as an infringement of God’s honour. The experience of persecution by the Papal church in France and the Netherlands aggravated the criticism. The most famous and influential part of the Heidelberg Catechism is its first question and answer: Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? A. That I am not my own, but belong – body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. -

Thomas Erastus oor die struktuur van die gemeenskap’^ A D Pont Abstract Thomas Erastus on the Church, the rulers and the community In this, largely desCriptive paper, the views of Thomas Erastus (1520-1583) of Heidelberg, are discussed. Erastus' views on the church, the rulers and the community are put forward in his Treatise Explicatio gravissimae of 1568-69, published in 1589. It is clear that Erastus depends on the Zurich covenant-theology in his view that the community is essentially a Christian community ruled by the pius magistratus. In this community the church does not appear as a separate coetus or societas, but is ruled by the godly prinCe who rules according to God's law. Erastus' view gained popularity in the ecclesia AngUcam and was, to a certain extent, also a plea for the divine rights of kings. On the whole there is nothing of which this book so much reminds us as the persistent efforts of a wily advocate to mislead a jury by impudent assertion and dt-liberate misconstruction of the teatimony. And there ill no process before which it would so shrink into nothing as the aearching examination of a legal mind fully informed on those subjects. Part Il is devoted to a consideration of the age and authorship of the Pentateuch. It deals more with questions of scholarship and criticism, and is much less popular in ilB cast. As a discussion of the subject from that point of view, it bears no comparison with those of German scholars, or with that of Dr. Davilison in his Introduction (1862). As the whole IIU~ ject is undergoing a discussion in this periodical; and the objections will be probably met more at large than can be done in this place, we refrain from further comment. Abstract from Article THE Q UEST FOR THE R ESTORATION OF THE C OVENANT AND THE G LORY OF M AGISTRACY : ZURICH AND THE D UTCH S ECOND R EFORMATION Andries Raath Published: Journal for Christian Scholarship , 3 rd &4 th quarter, (2003), 1-30 Abstract The first systematic exposition of the Reformed perspectives on magistracy was contained in the Swiss reformer Heinrich Bullinger’s (1504 - 1575) Decades (1549 - 1551), a comprehensive overview of the main points of magisterial office, based on the idea of the Biblical covenant. The two main points of Bullinger’s theses on magistracy concerned the distinction between the person of the magistrate and the office of magistracy, and secondly, magisterial office based on the Biblical covenant. Bullinger’s views on magistracy and political theology were mostly contained in the second Decade , particularly his commentaries on the fifth and sixth precepts of the Ten Commandments. The lucid style which focused mostly on matters of a practical nature and his main ideas on magistracy immediately appealed to the hearts and minds of both academics and laymen alike. Although John Calvin (1509 - 1564) systemized the main tenets of the Zurich Reformed views on magistracy, he provided a rather over condensed summary of these ideas in the fourth volume of his Institutes. Not only did he underplay the foundational role of the covenant in Reformed politics, but he also did not cover the Biblical qualifications for magistracy and the role of the judiciary in the public sphere. The irony, however, is that it was not the more elaborate Zurich discourse on magistracy that impacted upon the Reformed world of the post 1550’s, but Calvin’s abridged restatement separated from its covenantal moorings. -
The Historical Denial of the Free Offer
The Historical Denial of the Free Offer Modern Calvinist leaders who teach the free offer usually claim that they have support from historic Reformed theology. This is false. They frequently claim that Calvin supports their position and that the chief Reformed standards justify their claims. All this is false also. Historic Calvinism, both in its accepted standards and as expressed by its main theologians, denies the free offer; indeed, it would recognise the teaching of modern free offer preachers as Amyraldism, and condemn it as error. Now such is the lack of knowledge on these matters amongst today’s churchgoers that my claims here must be evidenced. I am happy to comply with this to demonstrate the truth. This paper is written to show what the foremost Reformed standards and theologians teach regarding the free offer. What is the free offer? The free offer is the teaching that: 1. God has a good intent to reprobates. 2. God loves all men without exception. 3. God desires, and even wills, the salvation of all men. 4. God gives grace to all men to some degree. To this the following is at least implied: 1. The atonement of Christ is universal in scope; he died for all. 2. Conversion is conditioned upon the will of the sinner. The Arminian basis of this theology is plain to see. Where does this come from? This teaching was once restricted to those who followed the school of Moses Amyraut (or Amyrald, 1596-1664) who sought to unite the universalism of Lutherans with the sovereign particularity of Calvinists.
