ADVERTISEMENTS coll=orl-sports-headlines College baseball changes looming Coaches fear new rules aimed at helping academic performance will end up hurting the game. Dave Curtis Sentinel Staff Writer May 22, 2007 South Carolina baseball Coach Ray Tanner fumes every time he hears about the changes. The NCAA, in an effort to boost the academic performance of players throughout college baseball, has approved changes Tanner thinks may harm the game he loves. "There are going to be issues with this," Tanner said on a Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference earlier this month. "And the caliber of play in college baseball is probably going to go down." "This" is a four-pronged overhaul of Division I college baseball rules approved in April by the NCAA Board of Directors and set to take effect for the 2008-09 academic year. Starting then, teams will face new standards for doling out their scholarships and new limits to the numbers on their rosters. Players must be academically eligible in late summer rather than mid-winter. And any player who transfers to another Division I school must sit out a year, a rule previously enforced only in football, basketball and men's ice hockey. The changes, recommended by a study group of coaches and administrators, are designed to increase the academic performance of D-I players. But they will affect almost every corner of the game, from summer leagues to high-school recruits to teams' budgets.

The cultural disconnect was that drastic. France, because of its colonies, half the team is black. There was a serious disconnect between the players and the staff. When I was a rookie, we had 3 meetings: one to manage your money, one for security matters, one to handle lovers. All this was meant to protect the NBA brand, the corporate brand. We’re athletes, but we’re more than athletes. I would love to see these corporations consider athletes as individuals, just as they consider themselves.

  • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.

  • The NBA Live Franchise an Analysis of Gameplay and Marketing Advances Over the Years Since Its Inception
The NBA Live Franchise An analysis of gameplay and marketing advances over the years since its inception STS 145: History of Game Design Professor Henry Lowood 3/16/2004 1 Pre-Game Warmups: Introduction Electronic Arts (EA), headquartered in Redwood City, California, is the world's leading independent developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software for personal computers and advanced entertainment systems. Year in and year out their games dominate the sports video games market. EA’s flagship and most popular basketball game, NBA Live, has advanced significantly in many areas of game design since its first release in 1995. This case study is an in-depth analysis of how EA Sports’ NBA Live series has advanced over the years, focusing on the ways in which it is exemplary of the evolution of video game design and marketing. Specifically, we will analyze the advances in game play (improvement of controls, realism, graphics, etc.) and the unprecedented marketing strategies that combined to make the NBA Live series such a huge success in the sports gaming industry. NBA Live was one of the few games on the basketball simulation market during its early years, leaving it with very little competition, which subsequently stagnated advances and innovation. Between its inception and about 1999, the game primarily advanced graphically as newer consoles and more powerful personal computers entered the market. Up until their 2002 release EA Sports sat comfortably on top of the market without making any groundbreaking gameplay innovations.
