(Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 Abstract Elite tennis players are required to perform on a variety of tennis court surfaces which differ in mechanical characteristics, such as friction and hardness, influencing their performance and risk of injury. To understand the influence of surfaces on performance and injury risk, three studies were conducted to investigate tennis players’ perceptions and biomechanical responses during tennis-specific movements on different court surfaces. In study 1, tennis players perceptions of acrylic and clay courts were identified following a thematic inductive analysis of semi-structured interviews (n = 7) to develop of a series of visual analogue scales (VAS) to quantify perceptions during studies 2 and 3. Perceptions of predictability of the surface and players’ ability to slide and change direction emerged, in addition to anticipated perceptions of grip and hardness. Study 2 aimed to examine the influence of court surfaces and prior clay court experience on perceptions and biomechanical characteristics of tennis-specific skills.

    THE LTA WILD CARD POLICY 1. INTRODUCTION A ‘wild card’ is a player included in the draw of a tennis event at the discretion of the tournament’s organising committee or organisation. Both main draw and qualifying wild cards may be made available at events. Because the LTA runs and organises some tournaments (LTA Staged Tournaments), the LTA is able to allocate wild cards in the draws of the events within those tournaments. This policy is a general policy that explains how the LTA chooses the players which receive those wild cards and how the LTA nominates individuals to receive wild cards for The Junior Championships, Wimbledon from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club Limited (the AELTC). The number of wild cards that are available to the LTA at ITF World Tennis Tour (Men’s & Women’s), ATP and WTA tour level events held in Great Britain is outlined in appendix 1. Specific Tournaments and Events If you would like to learn about a particular tournament or event, you should read the relevant tournament information. For LTA tournaments, you can find tournament-specific information packs in the competition resources area of the LTA website. 2. WHAT THIS POLICY EXPLAINS This policy (the Policy) explains how the LTA will allocate wild cards for LTA Staged Tournaments and how the LTA chooses the individuals who they will nominate to the AELTC to receive wildcards for The Junior Championships, Wimbledon.     Measurements of the horizontal coefficient of restitution for a superball and a tennis ball Rod Crossa) Physics Department, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW 2006 Australia ͑Received 9 July 2001; accepted 20 December 2001͒ When a ball is incident obliquely on a flat surface, the rebound spin, speed, and angle generally differ from the corresponding incident values. Measurements of all three quantities were made using a digital video camera to film the bounce of a tennis ball incident with zero spin at various angles on several different surfaces. The maximum spin rate of a spherical ball is determined by the condition that the ball commences to roll at the end of the impact. Under some conditions, the ball was found to spin faster than this limit. This result can be explained if the ball or the surface stores energy elastically due to deformation in a direction parallel to the surface. The latter effect was investigated by comparing the bounce of a tennis ball with that of a superball. Ideally, the coefficient of restitution ͑COR͒ of a superball is 1.0 in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The COR for the superball studied was found to be 0.76 in the horizontal direction, and the corresponding COR for a tennis ball was found to vary from Ϫ0.51 to ϩ0.24 depending on the incident angle and the coefficient of sliding friction. © 2002 American Association of Physics Teachers. ͓DOI: 10.1119/1.1450571͔ I. The tournament will be held from Aug. 24 to Sept. 13. Laykold will also be the new court surface for the US Open Series’ Western & Southern Open tournament in Cincinnati, which will be held from Aug. 15 to 23. The USTA picked the Laykold surface in late 2019.
