Feature image by Mike Penello. In the early 20th century, segregation was a fact of life for African Americans in the South. It became a matter of law in 1926. In 1919, a group of African Americans from Norfolk and Portsmouth met to develop a cultural/business center in Norfolk where the black community “could be treated with dignity and respect.” The “Twin Cities Amusement Corporation” envisioned something like a modern-day town center. The businessmen obtained funding from black owned financial institutions in Hampton Roads. Twin Cities designed and built a movie theater/ retail/ office complex at the corner of Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard in Norfolk. Photo courtesy of the family of Harvey Johnson The businessmen chose 25-year-old architect Harvey Johnson to design a 600-seat “state of the art” theater with balconies and an orchestra pit. The Attucks Theatre is the only surviving theater in the United States that was designed, financed and built by African Americans. The Attucks was named after Crispus Attucks, a stevedore of African and Native American descent. He was the first patriot killed in the Revolutionary War at the Boston Massacre of 1770. The theatre featured a stage curtain with a dramatic depiction of the death of Crispus Attucks. Photo by Scott Wertz. The Attucks was an immediate success. Hilliard The community of Harlem is one which is rich in history and culture. Throughout its development it has seen everything from poverty to urban growth. In spite of this the people of this community banded together to establish a strong community that became the model for other black urban areas. As a result of this millions have migrated to this community since the 1880’s, bringing with them heritages and traditions of their own. One of these traditions was that of music, and it was through music that many flocked to Harlem, especially in the 1920’s through 1950’s to seek their fortune in the big apple. Somewhere around the year 1918 this melting pot of southern blacks deeply rooted in the traditions of spirituals and blues mixed with the more educated northern blacks to create an atmosphere of artistic and intellectual growth never before seen or heard in America. Here was the birth of the Harlem Renaissance. The purpose of this unit will be to; a. Define the community of Harlem. b. Explain the growth of music in this area. c. Identify important people who spearheaded this movement. d. Identify places where music grew in Harlem. e. Establish a visual as well as an aural account of the musical history of this era. f. Anthologize the music of this era up to and including today’s urban music.

    CAB CALLOWAY SQUARE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SUMMARY TO DATE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SUMMARY OVERVIEW Public input and feedback are critical to creating a community-supported vision for Cab Calloway Square. Public participation ensures that the proposed concept plan addresses community concerns and ideas, fosters an inclusive and transparent planning process, identifies key opportunities and priority areas, and builds momentum to move the plan towards submission and implementation. In March 2019, the consultant team led by Design Collective, Inc. was engaged by City of Baltimore Department of Planning to begin the Concept Master Plan. The process approach was structured on a series of four community engagement efforts to effectively examine, envision, and create plan recommendations for the study area. A critical task for the first two efforts was to gather stakeholder input. This engagement was conducted through a variety of outreach methods, including two community workshops, an online survey, and updates through social media resources. In April 2019, Design Collective, Inc., the City of Baltimore Department of Planning, and the Druid Heights CDC hosted Community Workshop #1 to provide a project overview and begin the public engagement process. Over 30 community members attended. In May 2019, Community Workshop #2 was hosted on-site at the future park space for the Druid Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods, providing attendees an opportunity to meet the design team, lend input through various interactive exercises, review precedents and design strategies, and craft a vision for Cab Calloway Square. Over 100 community members attended. A SurveyMonkey online survey was created and open for feedback from May 10 - June 10, 2019 to gain additional input.

The study addresses the musical careers of both women and shows challenges that they worked hard to overcome, and how their relationship with other musicians and the public helped to steer their careers by making them important figures in African American gospel and religious music. In pursuing this objective, I relied on manuscripts, narratives, newspaper clippings, and published source materials. Results of the study points to commonalities or similarities between them. In particular, their lives go a long way to confirm the important contributions they made to religious music of their day and even today. Keywords: African American Gospel and Religious Music, Women, Gender, Liberation, Empowerment Overview This paper is structured as follows: It begins with a brief discussion of the historical background of gospel and sacred music. Thompson Charlottesville, Virginia BA, University of Alabama, 2002 MA, University of Mississippi, 2013 A Thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts Department of History University of Virginia May 2015 2 On April 21, 1956, Alabama newspaper The Anniston Star published a letter to the editor, criticizing what the writer perceived as the press’s unfair characterization of five local white men as “hoodlums” for their recent involvement in an act of racial violence. Mrs. Orliss W. Clevenger, a white resident of Anniston and wife of one of the “hoodlums,” wrote indignantly that she could not “understand why when a White does something to a Negro it makes front page for two or three days and why when three Negro men raped that white woman a few weeks ago, there was only one small article about it down at the bottom of the page.” With palpable resentment, Mrs. Clevenger decried a local minister for writing a letter of condemnation regarding her husband while failing to pen one denouncement of the accused African American rapists. Surely, the clergyman did not think that her husband’s crime constituted a sin worse than the rape of a white woman? Surely, the local paper did not condemn her husband for acting on behalf of the white race? Mrs. Clevenger ended her letter by reiterating her loyalty to her husband and, by extension, her race, writing, “I’m not ashamed of what they did because that is not near so bad as rape.” “If we have lost any white friends because of this,” she concluded, “I don’t think they were worth having anyway!”1 At the time, Mrs.

Leslie Jones has been a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” for three seasons; her work on the long- standing show has garnered her an Emmy Award nomination and inclusion on the Time 100 list. Leslie has covered the summer and winter Olympics for NBC and was the host of The 2017 BET Awards. She is currently recording one of the lead roles in the animated film Angry Birds 2 for Sony Pictures; she also starred in Paul Feig’s reboot of Ghostbusters, alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. Her other film credits include Chris Rock’s Top Five, Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck and the animated film Sing.     Sunday, Feb. 28 Post-Festival Jazz Jam – 6 p.m. Manhattan Casino 642 22nd St. South, St. Petersburg 2016 Celebrate the conclusion of the 2016 St. Petersburg Jazz Festival at the historic Manhattan Casino with a Post Festival Jazz Jam session. St. Petersburg Hosted by the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association, great area jazz musicians share their music with audiences, in a historic setting. The Manhattan Casino was a showcase for local African American artists as well as a haven for traveling African American entertainers who would stop in St. Petersburg during their tours. Some of American music’s most legendary performers played at the Manhattan including James Brown, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn, Fats Domino and the Five evenings Ink Spots.
