Spring Newsletter 2003 Hello Everyone, First of all, I want to wish every member a Happy Spring! The flowers are blossoming and the birds are singing. The only thing more beautiful is hearing Juice sing her songs! I have a lot of news to share with everyone. So, let’s move on with the latest information about Juice. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUICE! The entire JNFC wishes to extend our best wishes to Juice for her birthday! “Juice on behalf of the entire JNFC let me wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY February 18, 2003!!” CONCERT NEWS Juice performed at the Upland High School Auditorium on February 22, 2003. This show was a benefit for programs in the Upland CA community. Such programs included Pop Warner Football, Upland Dance Team, Upland High School Band, Spanish Club and others. A delicious feast provided by the Outback Steakhouse was served prior to the show. Juice came on and delivered a powerful performance to a crowd of about 800. 1 U.K. COUNTRY PEOPLE NEWS Juice was featured in the February issue of “Country Music People” a magazine in the United Kingdom. The article is called ‘Juice Newton Queen of Hearts.’ Juice talked about her career. Juice discussed selecting songs for the “JUICE” album and how she and producer Richard Landis listened to 300 demo songs. She obviously picked the right songs with hits like “Angel of The Morning” and “Queen of Hearts.” When asked about “The Sweetest Thing”, Juice confirmed that Otha Young wrote the song and that they recorded that song twice, once on RCA in the 1970’s and again on the “JUICE” album in 1981.

Kosher Country: Success and Survival on Nashville's Music Row V Stacy Harris uring the last few years, Nashville's country music in- dustry has been mourning a larger number of its citizens Dthan usual. These losses included two, Norma Gerson ("makeup artist to the stars") and Rainbow Room owner/- erstwhile "Hee Haw" bit-player David "Skull" Schulman ("the mayor of Printers' Alley"), that underscore the little-known range and diversity of roles Jews have played in Nashville and country- music history. According to Karen B. Fine, Nashville's Jewish music indus- try population numbers "about 60 or 70."1 Few would characterize this minority as a vocal one. Indeed, when Life staff writer Charles Hirshberg wrote about the relationship between Jews and country music in the Forward, he titled the article "Nashville's Jewish Newcomers Assert Themselves (Softly)."2 Likening the reluctance of Jewish country-music industry participants to medieval Marranos who, Hirshberg believed, kept "their Jewishness private to protect their livelihoods," Hirshberg's observations of five years ago seem equally as dire in 1999.3 There would well be a justification for this. Country music's heritage is rooted in traditions of a Protestant-Christian America. Six years ago, this author wrote, "Most country artists have re- corded at least one album of sacred songs; indeed it is almost expected."4 112 SOUTHERN JEWISH HISTORY Nonetheless change may be imminent. With many more new artists and a younger listener base, this expectation no longer exists. While it still looks good for a country singer to have a press kit containing biographical information noting that the subject's earliest memories are of "hymns or more fervent gospel songs" and of his/her own performances in church, whether true or not, such references are increasingly less mandatory.

  • LORRIE MORGAN PUBLICITY BIO 2016 One of the Most Eloquently
LORRIE MORGAN PUBLICITY BIO 2016 One of the most eloquently emotive country vocalists of modern times is launching her first new solo album in five years. Lorrie Morgan, the first woman in her genre to begin her career with three consecutive Platinum albums, re-emerges on Shanachie Entertainment with Letting Go….Slow. It is a collection that showcases a rainbow of emotions, from darkest heartache to bright, shiny humor. “Where I am in my life right now, I’m not afraid to express what I feel, or what I don’t feel,” she comments about the collection’s varied moods. “I’m not afraid to express my views on anything, especially on being a woman. “I have been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a breadwinner and, ultimately, a survivor. In many ways, I am a living, breathing country song, and I know what I sing. “I didn’t want this to be just another album. I wanted it to be something that really moved me. When I listened to songs for it, I’d think, ‘No, not that one. I’m not going to be able to sing that one, because I’m not going to be able to feel it.’ It was very important to me for this album to reflect the things that I am feeling today.” Morgan has long been the envy of her peers for her lustrous vocal phrasing and the down-to-earth believability of her torchy performances. On records such as “A Picture of Me Without You” and “I Guess You Had to Be There,” she ached with pain.

Holiday Newsletter 2003 Maxine Young Special Message From Juice “To all our wonderful and devoted fans, this time of year always brings so many thoughts, hopes and memories to me and I know to all of our "family." I loved seeing so many smiling faces at our concerts and sharing the music. These times are memories of a lifetime. I want to share with you that we lost someone who was so important to us that it is hard to believe she has passed. That person was Otha's mother, Maxine Young. She was that wonderful force who first helped us with our newsletters so many years ago. Always a supporter and a fan of Otha's music she was a loving grandmother and a steadfast mom to Otha. I will miss her and hope to meet her again someday. We have a time of wonder and renewal on the way, I hope we will have the hearts of a child to open up and step into this inspiring place and keep it with us all the New Year. Happy Holliday's and may God keep us one and all.” Juice Maxine Young the lady who managed the JNFC in the 1980’s and the early 1990’s passed away on November 15, 2003. Let us reflect on all the wonderful things Maxine has done for everyone including her family. Maxine was a lady whom many members of the JNFC held dear and still mention her to this day. I was very fortunate to have met Maxine a few years ago.

  • Who's Who in A&R at CAPITOL CAPITOL A&R — WEST COAST
Who's Who In A&R At CAPITOL INTRODUCTION: In examining A&R at Capitol Records it is interesting to note that, although each division (West Coast, East Coast, Nashville & Canada) are autonomous, there is considerable intra-office travel and communication. Each area is very much a part of the whole as the directors move freely between each other's offices, including Nashville and Canada. Furthermore, in discussions with Rupert Perry, he stresses the relationship between A&R and Business Affairs and the con- siderable help both Bob Young, V.P. of Business Affairs, and Arny Holland, Director of Business Affairs, offer. What follows is a brief rundown of the people who work in A&R for Capitol Records and a little background on each. CAPITOL A&R — WEST COAST RUPERT PERRY: V.P., A&R THELMA LEEMANS: Secretary to Rupert Perry Rupert started as a musician, whose first "job" in the music industry was in the background music library for Campbell-Conolly Music Publ'g. in England, In 1969, he moved over to help set up a publishing company for Radio Luxemborg, Louvingny Music, where he worked as Pro- fessional Manager until mid 1970. In Jan., 1971 he joined EMI L TXD. as personal assistant to the Group Director of Records, L.G. Wood. In May of 72, he moved to Capitol Records in the U.S. as Director of International A&R. Remaining with Capitol Records in the states, he was shifted to assist the Executive V.P. and Chief Operating Offices of Capitol Records, U.S. and from there moved to the position of General Manager of A&R under Al Coury.
