i University Store book buy-back begins this week

By Sarah Frey [email protected]

Look in the closet, behind the desk, under the bed, and just in case, check under your roommates bed. Those textbooks you swore you never wanted to set eyes on again may be worth something after all - although to find out exactly how much, you need to show up at the campus bookstore with the books and a picture ID before the end of the semester. Book buyback began December 3, and will con- tinue until December 12. Students who wish to sell their books back to the school should take them to the bookstore (again, along with a picture ID) to find out if the bookstore wants their books, and how much they are paying. Also, new this semester is buyback in the IT Building store, where there will be cash registers set up strictly for buyback. According to Shane Cassedy, textbook manager for the University Store, the amount of money the store will pay for a book is determined by whether or not a profes- sor decided to use that book next semester. If the book will be used, the store pays half of the book's retail price. If the book will not be used, then the store pays the national price for the book, which is anywhere from nothing to one-third of the retail price. David Caselli/STAFF Also, there is often a limit on how many copies of Book buyback will take place over the next two weeks from December 3 through December 12. Students may sell back See Books, Page 8A books at the University Book Store and the IT Building store and are required to bring a picture ID.

Our Opinion i Shopping as a contact sport i i The following editorial appeared in the Chicago Tribune on Monday, Dec. 1: • At the end of the roll call in the 1980s television police drama "Hill Street Blues," the avuncular Sgt. Phil Esterhaus always wagged ( a finger and delivered the same warning to the cops who were about to begin patrol: "Lets be careful out there." That pithy admonition should be uppermost in the minds of all those bravely venturing forth into the crucible of fire and ice known as holiday shopping. The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the start of the Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa shopping season, and judging from some of the mayhem that resulted, there's a lot of pent-up energy out there. Witness the hapless Florida woman who was first in line for a 6 a.m. sale, only to be knocked down and trampled by a mob rushing to snatch $29 DVD players at a local Wal-Mart on Friday. "She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," the woman's sister told the Associated Press. That lent a new, and altogether unsavory, meaning to the phrase "shop 'til you drop." Paramedics summoned to the store found the woman, slumped unconscious on top of a DVD player, while seemingly oblivious shoppers all around her continued to snap up items. Thankfully, the woman survived her injuries. Her sister says she doesn't remember anything about the ordeal. It's probably better that way. That incident made the news, but it's a fair bet that there were many altercations in the aisles that didn't, with stressed-out shop- pers squaring off in the toy section, battling to the death over the last Princess Barbie or whatever. In recent years, many stores have taken to opening earlier and earlier on the day after Thanksgiving, slashing prices to stoke the frenzied bargain-hunter in us all. But even they must be a bit agog by what they have unleashed. The wild beast of consumerism, the economy's best friend, is roaming the aisles, eyes agleam and elbows sharpened. At Circuit City stores, for instance, shoppers nearly cleaned out the early-bird special items well before the sale expired at noon Friday. The chief merchandising officer for Circuit City pronounced herself "shocked." She shouldn't be. Some shoppers and their compatriots plan their forays with the precision of military campaigns. And judg- ing from some of the reported disputes that have broken out, The Study tips from a seasoned senior Incredible Hulk would feel right at home in the midst of some of these bargain-hunting frenzies, amid a frothing mob of shoppers^ Its like a scene from a bad movie. tearing coveted items from the shelves. And it's great to long it threatens to set fire to the next stray paper that nears it. Fourteen half-empty caffeinated beverage bottles of various ages litter the landscape. My eyes glaze over. After all, there's another Iron Shopper challenge coming There's no escaping the end-of-semester crunch. And right now, even for those basket-weaving up: the day after Christmas, when those stiletto-elbowed bargain majors, the strain is coming down. Tony Blair's rumored *» r resignation bodes ill for

By Llewellyn King KRT Campus LAVENHAM, England - As they say, a year makes a difference. A year ago, British Prime Minister Tony Blair was so unassailable, with such a large majority in the House of Commons, that it appeared that he could be prime minister for years, if not decades. Now there is speculation that he might be gone by next Christmas, a victim of his own work habits as much as of politi- cal opposition. » ♦ For President Bush, the loss of Blair would be immense. Not that Britain would automatically repudiate its close affinity with the United States, but it is hard to imagine any other prime minister, let alone Blair's potential successor, * « the mercurial Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, hewing so closely to the Bush line. Crisis not over: Americans must regain confidence in beef

The following editorial appeared in the Dallas Morning News on Wednes- day, Dec. 31: The discovery that the mad cow found in Washington state came from Canada has caused the U.S. beef industry to breathe a wholly unwarranted sigh of relief. This crisis isn't over, and the American people shouldn't fool themselves into thinking it is. Nobody can say for sure that the "downer" Holstein that sparked the cur- rent scare was the only one of her kind. It was a fluke that bovine spongiform encephalophathy was discovered in this cow's tissue, and that fortunate find came only after her meat had been processed. Some experts believe the only reason BSE, or mad cow disease, hasn't been found here yet is that the gov- ernment hardly has been looking for it. The meatpacking industry has long fought congressional attempts to tighten regulation in response to the mad cow disaster overseas. Last summer, Con- gress narrowly defeated a ban on using sick or injured cattle for meat, with Republican and Democratic members of Congress from farm states blocking passage. Too expensive, they said. That's some bargain they struck. A single cow found to have slipped through the system has caused almost all of America's $3 billion annual beef export market to evaporate in a single week. Weigh that loss against the relatively paltry $300 million a comprehensive inspection regimen like some European countries have would cost here. And I.T. think about the scope of the catastrophe if American consumers, who eat 90 3-, percent of U.S. beef, lose confidence in its safety. 11 ll 1 THE UNIVERSITY STORE The industry points to the 1997 federal ban on feeding animal proteins to Store cattle - a ban the industry fought - as a successful anti-BSE measure. No wonder neurologist Stanley Prusiner, who won the Nobel Prize for discovering what causes BSE, believes that mad cow is more present in the U.S. beef supply than we know. This isn't a time for consumer panic. But more important, it isn't a time to kid ourselves that the health and regulatory status quo is acceptable. To do so would be - there's no better word for it - mad.

KING, FROM PAGE 4A Celebrating a Tradition of Unity Martin Luther King Jr. Day Cabinet and Labor Party operatives. It is an odd precariousness into which Blair, a devout Christian and clearly well-meaning man, has maneuvered himself. The situation is summed up by Peter Oborne, the political editor of the venerable Spectator magazine: "The summer marks the prime minister's 10th anniversary as Labor leader, an elegant opportunity for him to make an exit with as much grace as he can muster. There's no more than a 50-50 chance that he will be in Downing Street by this time next Christmas." In cricket, the equivalent of a home run is a ball in the air to the boundary, counting for six runs. Tony Blair needs to hit a six if he is to stay on and fulfill his potential as one of Britain's more extraordinary prime ministers. If he does not, it may be Britain's loss - and it certainly will be Americas loss.

01/13/04 By V,A, Patrick Slade DVD/Video [email protected] This is the ultimate battle of evil versus evil. Freddy Kreuger ( The Nightmare of Johnny English Elm Street films of the 80s and 90s), and Jason (Friday the 13 films) duke it out in a Spotlight: no holds barred battle to a bloody finish. Robert Englund, brings his Freddy back to the screen unapologetically as evil, if not even more gruesome, as the first films in series. He is as humorous and deceitful Swimming Pool as this character that audiences have come to know and fear. The ever-silent Jason still stalks from the shadows with machete in hand. When these two undoubtedly terrifying forces meet, what ensues is a battle royal that leaves nothing left standing in their wake. Stark Raving Mad The cinematic value brings back the days of old when children and adults alike would jump at every move either one of these menaces would make. The dark tone of the film, along with the nightmarish flashbacks and dreams, brings the film to a delightful conclusion that many fans of the first films would enjoy. Bring It On Again Of course with every horror film the acting is quite atrocious as the action in them. Notably there are some loopholes in the acting and the plot, but if the viewer sits back and goes for the ride, their wait will not be in vain. This is the film that fans have been waiting for. The body count is up quite a bit from the first few. Blood and more blood Freddy vs. Jason seeps through each horrific scene. Who wins this battle to the death? Only time and a rental of this DVD/Video will tell. Freddy vs. Jason isn't Oscar worthy, but it is a great end to a classic series.
