“Chanteuse Extraordinaire” —Rockford Register Star “Chanteuse Extraordinaire” —Rockford Register Star A Great American Songbook Experience “She will delight you with her warmth and smile as her voice touches your soul.” Jodi Beach The art, beauty, and grace of vocal jazz Art is, by it's very nature, something that inspires emotion in the beholder. No other form of art can so quickly, so exactly, call up such an impacting range of emotions as vocal jazz. Elegant ballads, beautiful love songs, warm swaying Latin rhythms, hot stomping swings, all take the listener through a lifetime of memories in a matter of minutes. Melody and lyric surround us everywhere, not by chance but by design because these are essential elements of life. Jodi Beach is not simply a singer/pianist, she is a story teller, a theme weaver, a scrapbook of our lives presented in song. Music that is as alive today as it was when first born, enjoyed by audiences young and old, all touched by these “essential elements of life.” Jodi Lynn Beach As a member of the National Independent Artist’s Registry, the Illinois Arts Council Artstour Roster, and the RAMI (Rockford Area Music Industry) Hall of Fame, Jodi has earned much acclaim. A 9-time RAMI and 5-time “Best of” On The Waterfront Music Festival Award winning jazz musician, she and her Trio regularly perform throughout the country. Their 2014 inspirational release, “You Are Not Alone,” earned Jodi a Song of the Year RAMI Award for the title track. The Trio’s 2010 release, “West of the Moon,” earned The Jodi Beach Trio the RAMI for Album of the Year. If you ask her mother when Jodi first began to sing, she will look at you with a very sincere face and ask, “When hasn’t she?” Truly from birth Jodi has been warming people’s hearts with pure and beautiful vocal tones. At the age of five she started piano lessons and could read sheet music before she could read English. The first section addresses the large role oral history plays in the dominant bebop narrative, the reasons the history of bebop has been constructed this way, and the issues that arise from allowing oral history to play such a large role in writing bebop’s history. The following chapters address specific instances from Gitler’s oral history and from the relevant recordings from this transitionary period of jazz, with musical transcription and analysis that elucidate the often vague words of the significant musicians.
