This edition includes information and answers to questions about middle and high school progression and promotion requirements, career planning, Florida’s college readiness initiatives, acceleration mechanisms, diploma designations, credit-by-exam, financial aid and updated postsecondary programs, degrees and requirements. Guidance counselors are a key resource for providing appropriate advising relating to secondary course selection and postsecondary planning. Data on student course taking patterns in high school and subsequent success in postsecondary education is a useful tool to assist counselors and secondary administrators in future planning. The Florida Department of Education’s (DOE) Office of Articulation, using data collected and reported by the K-20 Education Data Warehouse, produces online college readiness reports, available through the High School Feedback Report and Performance on Common Placement Tests. The latest performance data for the 2014 Florida public high school graduate cohort collected by colleges and universities can be accessed at http://www.fldoe.org/policy/articulation. We thank Florida’s guidance counselors and academic advisors for their support and continued efforts to encourage students to pursue relevance and rigor throughout their academic experiences. The 2016-2017 Handbook is available online through the FloridaShines website at www.floridashines.org, along with a variety of other useful guidance tools. Many thanks to all that contributed to the new edition.
