    Popular Music From the 1950’s – www.thepeoplehistory.com The 1950’s were a time of changes, and the music of the decade both reflected the cultural changes that were happening while still holding onto the societal norms of the past. Following the detrimental effects of World War II, the United States was about to embark on a musical journey that would change the face of music for decades to come. Racial tensions were being strained with the beginning of the civil rights movement and music reflected many of those tensions. Rhythm & Blues (R&B) and Rock ‘n’ Roll popularized “black” music and many African-American musicians rose to prominence and enjoyed success. Some were able to reap the benefits of their work, but many others were forgotten or denied access to audiences through segregation. A lot of people believe that during the fifties many of the white artists stole music from African-Americans and capitalized on it for their own benefit in a way that the original artists could not. A perfect example of this happening is when Pat Boone was made to cover Little Richard’s song “Tutti Frutti” and Boone’s version topped higher on the charts, while considered by many to be the inferior version of the song. Others believe that the popularization of R&B and Rock ‘n’ Roll only helped to bridge the gap between blacks and whites and further the civil rights movement. While those genres paved the way for future music, traditional pop and country music clung to the past with old standards remaining popular and a multitude of covers topping the charts.

    “Blue Suede Shoes”—Carl Perkins (1955) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Mark Bristol with Ken Burke (guest post)* Carl Perkins Raised by sharecroppers near Tiptonville, TN, Carl Perkins grew up on Southern Gospel music both from church and from African-American field hands. Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe's music on the “Grand Ole Opry” gave Carl the urge to play guitar, so his dad made him his first one out of a cigar box, later buying him a used and battered Gene Autry model. Young Perkins learned some chords and licks from “Uncle” John Westbrook, a neighboring sharecropper, songs like “Matchbox Blues” (which he later recorded), and how to connect the sound from the strings to his soul. At 14, he wrote “Let Me Take You To The Movie Magg,” which later convinced Sam Phillips to offer him a Sun Records contract, after Carl begged for a chance to be heard. Carl had been playing the beer joints around Jackson, TN, and on local radio with his brothers Jay and Clayton (and later on with W.S. “Fluke” Holland on drums) when his wife Val heard Elvis' version of “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” on the radio and said to Carl, “That sounds like y'all's music.” “Movie Magg” was released March 19, 1955 on Phillips' Flip label, with the much more country “Turn Around” on the other side becoming a regional success. Johnny Cash had become a Sun artist by then, and he, Elvis and Perkins toured regionally together. Carl's second record “Gone, Gone, Gone” was released on Sun, and also was a regional success, with “Let The Jukebox Keep On Playing” on its flipside.
