And wouldn’t it be nice if Kosovo could take this new shift in American policy as a beacon for the kind of foundation we will lay here in this new nation? The USA has been Kosovo’s hero all along, but now the USA may just start being a good example. In the George Bush world, a government ridden with corruption and nepotism is perfectly acceptable. That’s how Bush got to be presi- dent himself. In the Obama world, we must demand integrity and service from our leaders in Kosovo, or elect new leaders. In the Bush world, selling off Kosovo’s public enterprises to foreign com- panies who pollute as they profit is perfectly acceptable. In an Obama world, we should demand that such companies clean up or get out, and we should lobby against building a giant coal-burning power plant, and instead invest in clean energy development for Kosovo. It’s time we think about how we leave this place for our grandchildren. That’s the Obama-world way. Two weeks ago, I would have cringed at the thought of my young children speaking with admiration - or even knowing the names - of politicians. But then again, I would not have imagined myself ever admiring a politician. And, of course, we all must be vigilant and highly demanding of Obama, but not cynical. I know this will be tough for the Generation of Cynics, many of whom have already begun predicting doom: “He will be assassinated like all the oth- ers.” “He won’t be able to deliver us the change he promises.” The very fact that he has inspired and mobilized so many young people to participate in our democracy is that change. The very fact that the world community has rejoiced in the prospect of a new, more considerate USA is that change. And aside from making smart choices, managing the government, and staying out of trou- ble, the president’s job is also to inspire us to believe in possibili- ties and to work for that change in our daily lives, on a grassroots level. The corporate-oil and war machine does not rule our coun- try. We do. The election of Barack Obama does not guarantee us change. It encourages all of us to make it happen.
