    LEAF, BARK, THORN, ROOT: ARBOREAL ECOCRITICISM AND SHAKESPEAREAN DRAMA by Jason Charles Hogue DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Texas at Arlington May, 2019 Arlington, Texas Supervising Committee: Amy L. Tigner, Supervising Professor Stacy Alaimo Jacqueline Fay ABSTRACT Leaf, Bark, Thorn, Root: Arboreal Ecocriticism and Shakespearean Drama Jason Charles Hogue, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2019 Supervising Professor: Amy L. Tigner Leaf, Bark, Thorn, Root traces the appearance of trees and their constituent parts in five Shakespearean plays: Macbeth, The Tempest, 3 Henry VI, Richard III, and As You Like It. The dissertation shows how these plays reveal arboreal agencies intra-acting with the characters of the play-texts by assessing the mergings of human and arboreal bodies, as well as instances of hacking and hewing inflicted across these bodies. Taking a posthumanist approach informed by ecomaterialism, critical plant studies, and affect theory, I argue that these sites of painful human- arboreal encounter in Shakespeare’s plays initiate potentials for thinking-with and feeling-with, across not only species (in the spirit of Donna Haraway’s Companion Species Manifesto) but also across biological kingdoms. Throughout the dissertation, I complicate philosopher Michael Marder’s theories of plant-thinking via these early modern depictions of and relations to trees, whose complex existences inform the texts in multiple registers. The trees of Shakespeare offer ways into theorizing plant-being that not only reflect early modern preoccupations but also resonate across the centuries, potentially serving as a bridge between historicist and presentist methodological concerns, a useful nexus for facing looming ecological issues like climate change, the effects of which long-lived trees bear bodily witness in their annual growth rings and in the shifting of leaf longevity.

    Fall 2005 85 Soul Death and the Death of Soul in Critical Theory: A Polemic Anthony Kubiak The tensions between religion and politics in the United States have been part of this country’s national identity from the beginning. The framers of the Constitution, while trying to accommodate the religious fervor of Puritan culture, at the same time did not wish to relinquish their Enlightenment beliefs in the rational basis of self-governance, so they walked a conceptual tightrope in trying to satisfy both the Thomas Paines and the Cotton Mathers of early American culture. The irony is that while this separation of Church and State was upheld precisely to prevent the rampant religious warfare so recently scourging Europe, the tensions between secularists and religious peoples remained in the United States long after it waned on the Continent. The tensions are, in fact, very much with us today. But even though these tensions remain, the precise alignments of religion and politics in the course of United States history have fluctuated. While in large part upholding the values of Puritanism, religion in American history has also at times taken the side of progressive thought, especially in the mid-twentieth century, when the interplay between Liberation Theology and the Civil Rights Movement defined “traditional values” not in terms of sexual repression and nationalism, but rather as a duty to the poor, the oppressed, and the powerless. The origins of what has come to be called Liberation Theology began in the 1950s and 1960s, as a reaction against somewhat earlier populist, but repressive, regimes that were more or less the norm in the southern Americas, such as the Brazilian dictatorship of Getúlio Dornelles Vargas1 or the government of Mexican populist leader Lázaro Cárdenas.2 Perhaps the most well-known and typical example of this type of regime appeared in Argentina, in the form of the Perón government, which consolidated power and economic influence through similar populist and nationalist political policy.

    Interplay: The Method and Potential of a Cognitive Scientific Approach to Theatre1 Amy Cook Theatre works on the body and mind of the spectator, changing minds and touch- ing bodies at the deepest level. As a theatre scholar and practitioner, I am driven to understand the nature of that “work”: how is it that an embodied story told onstage has the power to “move” an audience? At a time when most people are more accus- tomed to the dramaturgical and rhetorical simplicity of a television comedy, how do audiences unpack the language and storytelling in a play like Richard III? Theatre and performance studies have productively turned to theories of anthropology, psychology, linguistics, and others to seek answers to the questions that drive the field.2 In a move likely to provide the kind of jolt to the field that Turner and Freud once did, scholars are now seeking—and finding—answers in the cognitive sciences.3 Amy Cook is a Mellon Fellow at Emory University.     Introduction: Beyond New Historicism? John Drakakis University of Stirling, English Monika Fludernik University of Freiburg, Germany, English Literature This special issue arose from questions of whether or not the New Historicist paradigm in early modern studies has been superseded by newer theoretical approaches and, if so, whether these have entirely broken with New His- toricist tenets (“after”) or are in constructive dialogue with them (“beyond”). This introduction and the following essays lay out a number of considerations that argue for the existence of newer approaches; at the same time, they demonstrate that questions dominant in New Historicist work, as well as New Historicist modes of writing, continue to inform recent research in early modern studies. In the first chapter of his book After Theory, Terry Eagleton (2003: 1 – 2) asserts: “There can be no going back to an age when it was enough to pronounce Keats delectable or Milton a doughty spirit. It is not as though the whole project [i.e., theory] was a ghastly mistake on which some merciful soul has now blown the whistle, so that we can all return to whatever it was that we were doing before Ferdinand de Saussure heaved over the horizon.” Eagleton’s (ibid.: 2) insistence that we should not return to a pretheoretical literary impressionism notwithstanding, he is nostalgic about an “older gen- eration” of theoreticians who followed in the wake of Saussure, or whose work has come into the public domain as a consequence of the reception of Poetics Today 35:4 (Winter 2014) DOI

    Writing Rogues: Cheap Print Representations of Deviance in Early Modern London Eleni Liapi PhD THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY September 2013 ABSTRACT The figure of the rogue, either as a trickster or a threat, gripped the early modern imagination. Through plays, pamphlets, proclamations and gossip about criminals, London dwellers were bombarded with information about rogues, all of which created the impression that London was swarming with such unsavoury characters. This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of pamphlets about rogues, combining the history of print culture and its methods with the social history of London and crime. This contrasts with previous treatments of this material: rogue literature has been used as background for the analysis of early modern plays, especially late sixteenth- and early seventeenth- century ones, by literary scholars, and has usually been dismissed by historians as entirely fictional. My thesis focuses on cheap pamphlets about rogues from 1590 to 1670; this period saw a burst of publications about criminals, ranging from rogue discoveries to narratives of life and death and descriptions of prisons. Through these publications, the image of the rogue was modified, acquiring new connotations, such as the Cavalier, while at the same time retaining earlier ones, such as the trickster figure or the image of the prodigal son. These changes in the image of the rogue, while not challenging the consistency of his/her depiction, reflect the continuing importance of this figure in perceptions of crime. The majority of these texts was published in London, was London-centric in its contents, and was advertised as news about crime in the metropolis.
