Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012. -

Community Engagement and Educational Outreach In November 1977, 20,000 women and men left their jobs and homes in cities and small towns around the country to come together at the fi rst National Women’s Conference in Houston, Texas. Their aim was to end dis- crimination against women and promote their equal rights. Present were two former fi rst ladies–Lady Bird Johnson and Betty Ford—and the current fi rst lady, Rosalyn Carter. Also present were grandmothers and lesbians, Republicans and Democrats, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinas, and Native Ameri- can women—and the most infl uential leaders of the burgeoning women’s movement—Bella Abzug, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Eleanor Smeal, Ann Richards, Coretta Scott King, Barbara Jordan and others. SISTERS OF ’77 provides a fascinating look at that pivotal weekend and how it changed American life and the lives of the women who attended. These relationships have inflected my work in a variety of dimensions and I have long anticipated acknowledging them here. The University of Minnesota was my home for fifteen years. First, I experienced it as an undergraduate, a period during which I discovered the sport of rowing. The Minnesota Athletic Department announced in the spring of my freshman year that women’s rowing—a sport I joined at the club level after arriving on campus—would become a varsity team in the fall of 2000. This decision was driven by efforts to comply with Title IX, and it would forever alter the course of my life. I wrote my summa thesis on the policy, and have Wendy Rahn, Jamie Druckman, and Barbara Welke to thank for cultivating my interest in policy and politics through their roles as advisors of my undergraduate research. My career in rowing, at first a means to make friends and community on a sprawling Big Ten campus, became increasingly central to my life as an undergraduate and I would go on to coach at Minnesota for five years after completing my B.A. -

Larry Jordan) is the 2017 recipient of the Sylvanus Thayer Award presented by the West Point AOG. The Thayer Award is given to a citizen of the United States, other than a West Point graduate, whose outstanding character, accomplishments and stature in the civilian community draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives, in keeping with its motto: “Duty, Honor, Country.” See Page 3 for story and photos. Stinson (formerly Lindblom) was an active member of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in California and served as a delegate to the First National Women's Conference in Houston. The collection includes several ephemeral objects reflecting Stinson's activism including IWY pendant necklaces and an ERA license plate frame, along with published reports and articles relating to the IWY and a 1979 NOW conference in California. Stinson (formerly Lindblom) was an activist involved with the National Organization for Women (NOW) in California. She served as a delegate from California at the First National Women's Conference in Houston and attended the 1979 NOW conference in California. The National Women's Conference (NWC) was a result of a series of actions in observance of International Women's Year (IWY) in 1975. On January 9th, 1975, President Ford issued Executive Order No. 11832, establishing the NOW membership card National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year with the objectives of recognizing the contributions of women and promoting equality of the sexes. The Commission was responsible for orchestrating events in celebration of IWY, as well as investigating discrimination and other issues affecting women and submitting recommendations for action to the President and Congress. Originally intended to dissolve at the end of 1975, the Commission was extended for a second year by President Ford. -
