They reported they had been unable to feel this way again in any of their respective senior secondary school settings. In the process of explaining why he felt he hadn‘t fitted into his school, one young man said, ―They didn‘t care about normal kids like me.‖ For him, being Maori was ―normal‖ and he didn‘t see anything in his senior secondary schooling experience that valued his reality.

Farnworth Department of Natural Sciences, Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand abstract Keywords: Stray cats are a common feature of urban landscapes and are associated with issues of animal welfare and Geocoding negative environmental impacts. Management, planning and decision-making require readily accessible Stray cat information on stray cats. However, much of the existing data is not immediately useful for a geographic Spatial distribution information system (GIS) in terms of format, content and explicit location information. Spreadsheets we Hot spot analysis Gwr obtained from a single large shelter in the Auckland region. They contained records of stray cat pickups Exploratory GIS and admissions for an entire year (n ¼ 8573) of which 56.4% (n ¼ 4834) contained data that could be processed to derive relevant spatial information. The resulting data consisted of identified roads and areas of Auckland where the stray cats were found. Published census databases and shapefiles were matched with the data to build a GIS of stray cats. Global and local regression analysis was employed to discover spatial distribution characteristics including the identification of areas with relatively high and low concentrations of stray cats and to explore relationships between socioeconomic condition and stray cat density. Significant clustering is more evident in South Auckland than elsewhere in the region. Specific geographical information is valuable, not only for understanding population dynamics of stray cats, but also to allow spatial and temporal targeting of resources to minimise their impact and promote responsible ownership.

Dorner Victoria University of Wellington Wellington, New Zealand Introduction This is the story of Tupu - the Dawson Road Youth Library. Tupu is located on Dawson Road in the Clover Park area of Otara in Manukau City, which is one of six municipalities that form New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland. Otara is the poorest part of Auckland, and indeed, is most likely the poorest urban area in all of New Zealand. Today I am going to talk with you about the innovative resources and services offered at Tupu to the youth of Clover Park, and more importantly, about how and why those services came to be. The data that support this paper were gathered through interviews with many of the key people involved in creating Tupu, during a five-month period around the time of its official opening on 1 August 2001. These key people included the mayor of Manukau City, two Manukau City Councillors who were representing the people of Otara and were the main political proponents for the creation of Tupu, local primary and secondary school teachers, community gatekeepers such as the minister of the Samoan Church located right next door to the library, teachers from local schools, families in the Clover Park area of Otara, and the Manukau City library staff who helped create and staff Tupu.
