  • "Archie's Girls?" Betty, Veronica, and the Rise of American Youth Culture, 1941-1950
ABSTRACT "ARCHIE'S GIRLS?" BETTY, VERONICA, AND THE RISE OF AMERICAN YOUTH CULTURE, 1941-1950 by Caroline Elizabeth Johnson This thesis uses the characters of Betty and Veronica of the Archie Comic series to explore the roles of adolescent females during the 1940s in the United States. The author utilizes feminist and art theory as well as relevant literature to argue that the writers of Archie Comics reflect and reify teenage experience through the characters of Betty and Veronica. Themes addressed include labor roles, dating habits, as well as teen involvement in consumer culture. By addressing the role of adolescent experience, the author hopes to expand conversations regarding women during the 1940s to include the impact of youth culture. The author concludes by suggesting Betty and Veronica represent a larger trend in American society regarding the way in which young women are conditioned to think and act in a particular manner via popular culture. • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation. Dismemberment. Serial killers. Graphic gore. Hey, Kids! COMICS!! Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

  • Archie's Betty
ARCHIE’S BETTY An independent documentary search for the real-life people behind the characters in Archie comics. SHORT SYNOPSIS The filmmaker, a devoted Archie fan, makes an independent documentary search for the real-life people behind the characters in the ever-popular Archie comics. Were Archie, Betty, Veronica, Moose, and Jughead based on actual students whom Bob Montana, the original Archie cartoonist, knew in high school in the 1930s in Haverhill, Massachusetts? SYNOPSIS Archie’s Betty is an independent documentary search by journalist and filmmaker Gerald Peary to determine if the characters in Archie comics—Archie, Betty, Veronica, Moose, Jughead. etc.-- were modeled on real-life people. As an Archie- obsessed child, Peary believed that somewhere in America there was a real town of Riverdale, where Archie and his teen friends went to school. As an adult, he found that his fantasy might have basis in fact. Riverdale could be the city of Haverhill, Massachusetts, where Bob Montana, the original cartoonist of Archie, attended high school in the mid-1930s. Did Montana love Haverhill High so much that he based Archie characters on students in his classes? Was Archie inspired by a girl-crazy Haverhill High cutup? Was Veronica modeled on the most popular girl at the high school? Was Betty based on the girl living next door to young Bob? And what of Moose and Jughead? For Archie’s Betty, Peary meets with Montana's surviving classmates, a veteran Archie cartoonist, and Archie experts to unravel the real story. The search culminates at a senior living facility in Edison, New Jersey.

Stephen Smith ARH 580 Betty vs. Veronica American Archie-types 1 Archie’s World Archie Comics Publications, Inc. introduced its first openly gay character in September 2010. The cover of Ve- ronica #202 (fig. 1) exclaims, “meet the hot new guy.” The homosexual Kevin Keller enters a world that is nothing if not wholesome, middle American, and uncontroversial. The mainstream press responded to Kevin as little more than another human interest or business sto- ry.1 The gay press applauded the move2 but, in general, the lack of outrage and criticism by the usual suspects3 is a clear sign of the social progress of American culture. The character of Archie An- 1. drews is designed to be the most “average” of all possible American teenagers. He lives in the average town of Riverdale and attends the unremarkable Riverdale High. He is not particularly wealthy or poor, intelligent of dumb, athletic or nerdy, large or small. He is the absolute center of the bell curve of the American teenage boy. The main female characters, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, along with Archie, form a love triangle that has gone unresolved for almost seventy years. These characters have represented the “norm” as the “norm,” itself, has dramatically changed. What effect do Archie, Veronica, and Betty have on the establishment of gender identities among their readers? How have Archie comics evolved as American society, as a whole, has become more inclusive? It is fair to say that the 1. White Rabbit: English Studies in Latin America Issue 5 (July 2013) ISSN: 0719-0921 From Sweethearts to Troubled Hearts: Betty & Veronica and Enid & Rebecca as Portraits of America’s Youth. Cristián Valenzuela1 Twentieth century American pop culture has had its fair share of teenage icons, young characters that have undoubtedly represented the nation’s youth and impending mood. While many of them can be found in television and literature, some paradigmatic characters can also be encountered in comic books. This is the case of Betty & Veronica from Archie Comics, created by Bob Montana in 1941, and Enid & Rebecca from Ghost World, created by Daniel Clowes in 1993. Both pairs of best friends are loyal portraits of teenage America, each in their own way. While Archie’s girlfriends bring to life society’s teenage and family values of the American Dream era, Ghost World, through its protagonists, addresses teenage angst, lost identity and individualism as its central themes.

  • And Frank Tieri and Michael Walsh, Jughead: the Hunger (New York: Archie Comic Publications, 2017)
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 16 (Autumn 2017) Riverdale, Season 1 (CW, 2017) and Frank Tieri and Michael Walsh, Jughead: The Hunger (New York: Archie Comic Publications, 2017) Since its conception in 1941 by John L. Goldwater and Bob Montana, the Archie Comic series has been known for its wholesome and comedic image. The characters are sweet- natured young teenagers who endure high-school tribulations with a lively spirit and a keen eye for zany adventures. The storylines centre on adolescence and are often successfully structured around slapstick humour. In contrast to the original series, however, the recent renditions of this fictional world — specifically both the television series Riverdale and the comic Jughead: The Hunger — are anything but comedic and wholesome. Long gone is the family-friendly spirit of the mid-twentieth-century comics; now, Archie and his friends are entering the darker and more sinister worlds of the twenty-first-century gothic. Comic-book fans have been following the exploits of Archie and the gang since they made their first appearance. The original Archie cast is comprised of Archie Andrews, the all- American teenager; Betty Cooper, the sweet girl next-door; Veronica Lodge, the wealthy heiress; Jughead Jones, the sensible and witty best friend; and Cheryl Blossom, the attractive yet conniving classmate. At the height of superhero and fantastical comics’ popularity, Goldwater created a series with which the adolescent readership of mid-twentieth-century America could identify.1 Through the years, the comic series has reinvented itself in various spin-off projects, such as the Americana comic series, which focuses on a range of different decades; the Archie Meets comic series, which centres on meeting various pop-culture artists; the Life with Archie comic series, set in alternate universe; the Weird Mysteries, a cartoon television series reminiscent of Scooby Doo; and many other adaptations that explore a variety of genres but all retain the wholesome light-hearted nature of the original series.
