Dr. Schulte’s “Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Arts and Humanities” highlighted many of the strengths of our program, and “Crafting Poetry” provided useful insight into my own poetry as well as a thorough introduction international poetry. Dr. Brettell’s “Art and Anarchy” course expounded the idea that poets could be political in their lives and work, both overtly and implicitly. -
Computing Poetry
Computing Poetry Rodolfo Delmonte Department of Language Studies & Department of Computer Science Ca’ Foscari University - 30123, Venezia, Italy [email protected] Abstract: We present SPARSAR, a system for the automatic analysis of poetry(and text) style which makes use of NLP tools like tokenizers, sentence splitters, NER (Name Entity Recognition) tools, and taggers. Our system in addition to the tools listed above which aim at obtaining the same results of quantitative linguistics, adds a number of additional tools for syntactic and semantic structural analysis and prosodic modeling. We use a constituency parser to measure the structure of modifiers in NPs; and a dependency mapping of the previous parse to analyse the verbal complex and determine Polarity and Factuality. Another important component of the system is a phonological parser to account for OOVWs, in the process of grapheme to phoneme conversion of the poem. We also measure the prosody of the poem by associating mean durational values in msecs to each syllable from a database and created an algorithm to account for the evaluation of durational values for any possible syllable structure. Eventually we produce six general indices that allow single poems as well as single poets to be compared. These indices include a Semantic Density Index which computes in a wholly new manner the complexity of a text/poem. The empirical focus is the metrical structure of Seneca's anapaestic odes. On the basis of a detailed formal analysis, in which special attention is paid to the delimitation and internal structure of metrical periods, I argue against the dimeter colometry traditionally assumed. This conclusion in turn is based on a second, more methodological claim, namely that in establishing the colometry of an ancient piece of poetry, the modern metrician is only allowed to set apart a given string of metrical elements as a separate metron, colon or period, if this postulated metrical entity could 'aurally' be distinguished as such by the hearer. -

Metrical patterns and layers of sense: some remarks on metre, rhythm and meaning* João Batista Toledo Prado State University of São Paulo, Araraquara Introduction Ideally, all metric phenomena should be observed as empirically as possible on the phonetic-phonological dimension of a language. Empirical observation has however considerably restricted limits when it comes to classical languages, due to the present manifest reductions created by their historical fate, which puts them among those idioms not any longer spoken today. Only legitimate speakers of the Latin language, that is, those who have had it as their mother tongue, were totally able to empirically experience features such as cadence, harmony, rhythm of speech as well as other traits crafted by versifi cation techniques, especially when one takes into account the fact that, from a certain time on, almost all verse compositions in Rome were meant to be read aloud and for public performances1. Classical Metrics manuals have always sought to catalog regularities seen in classical poetry and formulate the standards of its occurrence in verses, by proceeding to investigate their harmony measures, i.e., poetic meters, and establishing the laws that rule their use as well as the eff ects produced by them, but always based on the sound phenomenon of ancient languages like Greek and Latin, which could not deliver to posterity any positive evidence of how their phonemes were articulated. -

APPENDIX B Basic Guide to Latin Meter and Scansion Latin poetry follows a strict rhythm based on the quantity of the vowel in each syllable. Each line of poetry divides into a number of feet (analogous to the measures in music). The syllables in each foot scan as “long” or “short” according to the parameters of the meter that the poet employs. A vowel scans as “long” if (1) it is long by nature (e.g., the ablative singular ending in the first declen- sion: puellā); (2) it is a diphthong: ae (saepe), au (laudat), ei (deinde), eu (neuter), oe (poena), ui (cui); (3) it is long by position—these vowels are followed by double consonants (cantātae) or a consonantal i (Trōia), x (flexibus), or z. Studio | Volume 3 Issue 1 : 2009 Annie Finch The Metrical Compass (excerpt from A Poet’s Ear: A Handbook of Meter and Form, forthcoming, University of Michigan Press) Just as music has other time signatures besides 4/4 time, and painting has other ranges of color besides greens and yellows, poetry has other meters besides iambic. Yet for hundreds of years, almost all serious poetry in English meter has been written in iambs. One of the most exciting aspects of being a poet today is our access to a fascinating and almost unexplored landscape of metrical possibilities: the “non-iambic” meters. In teaching a variety of meters to my students, I have found that certain poets come alive in trochees, dactyls, or anapests, writing poems that they could never have written in iambic meter. I now teach all four meters to my students simultaneously, and I find that learning to write in one meter automatically sharpens skill in each of the others. Popular poems, from Poe to Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, have been the primary home of noniambic meters for over a century. Critics might not think this a very dignified poetic home; (John Crowe Ransom, for example, asserted in the mid-twentieth century that no-one could be a major poet without writing most of their work in blank iambic verse). But in fact, trochees, anapests and dactyls could have done a lot worse. Popular or “low” poetry, not to mention children’s poetry such as Dr. Seuss, kept these rhythms vital and energetic in the bodies of a large number of readers at a time when the audience for serious or “high” poetry was shrinking. -

ENG 2D POETRY: METRE AND BEAT Wilson METRE is the basic rhythm structure in poetry. Many types of poetry follow specific rhythmic patterns or an order of rhythm within different types of poems. It works like this: Every word can be divided into syllables: SYLLABLE SYL LAB LE When each syllable is spoken it is either spoken STRESSED or UNSTRESSED. Symbols can be placed above each syllable to show the stress or unstress. A u (unstressed) and a / (stressed) can show the pattern visually. This is called SCANSION. A group of stressed and unstressed syllables is called a FOOT. When a foot is repeated a certain number of times we get the different types of metre: 1. IAMBIC PENTAMETRE: Five IAMBIC (unstress/stress) feet per line So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. 2. IAMBIC TETRAMETRE: Four IAMBIC (unstress/stress) feet per line Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound (TETRAMETRE) That saved a wretch like me; (TRIMETRE) I once was lost, but now am found; (TETRAMETRE) Was blind, but now I see. (TRIMETRE) 3. IAMBIC TRIMETRE: Three IAMBIC (unstress/stress) feet per line (SEE EXAMPLE ABOVE) 4. A Four-Line stanza with the pattern of two lines of iambic tetrameter and two lines of iambic trimetre is a common form of BALLAD WRITING. 5. CAESURA: An intentional break in the rhythm of a poem. POETRY ASSESSMENT PART ONE: Rhyming Quatrain A Quatrain is a type of stanza, or a complete poem, consisting of four lines. Your assignment is to write 2 rhyming quatrains on a certain theme. Below you will find some examples. Requirements: • 2 Rhyming Quatrains. You may use the rhyme schemes ABAB, AABB, AABA, ABBA, ABAB or ABCB for the FIRST QUATRAIN. You may continue with that rhyme scheme OR you can choose to use CDCD, CCDD, CCDC, CDCD, CDDC or CDED for your SECOND QUATRAIN. Scansion scansion, English, is the traditional task of analyzing the lines of a poem, marking the poetry, out-of-vocabulary stressed and non-stressed elements and dividing the line into metrical words feet. The system’s workflow is composed of several subtasks designed around finite-state machines that analyze verse by performing tok- enization, part-of-speech tagging, stress placement, and stress-pattern prediction for unknown words. The scanner also classifies poems ac- cording to the predominant type of metrical foot found. We present a brief evaluation of the system using a gold standard corpus of human- scanned verse, on which a per-syllable accuracy of 86.78% is achieved.
