    Bowdoin College Commencement 1992 One of America’s leading writers of historical fiction, JAMES A. MICHENER has published more than 30 books. His writing career began with the publication in 1947 of a book of interrelated stories titled Tales of the South Pacific, based upon his experiences in the U.S. Navy where he served on 49 different Pacific islands. The work won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, and inspired one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, which won its own Pulitzer Prize. Michener’s first book set the course for his career, which would feature works about many cultures with emphasis on the relationships between different peoples and the need to overcome ignorance and prejudice. Random House has published Michener’s works on Japan (Sayonara), Hawaii (Hawaii), Spain (Iberia), Southeast Asia (The Voice of Asia), South Africa (The Covenant) and Poland (Poland), among others. Michener has also written a number of works about the United States, including Centennial, which became a television series, Chesapeake, and Texas. Since 1987, the prolific Michener has written five books, including Alaska and his most recent work, The Novel. His books have been issued in virtually every language in the world. Michener has also been involved in public service, beginning with an unsuccessful 1962 bid for Congress. From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an experience which he used to write his 1982 novel Space.     The Beginnings of Sugar Production in Hawai'i Robert L. Cushing The sesquicentennial of sugar production in Hawai'i is being observed in 1985 because Ladd & Go. initiated its sugar operation at Koloa, Kaua'i in 1835. Successors to the Ladd & Co. enterprise have continued to grow sugarcane on some of the same lands, and the cane has been milled in factories located near the same site as that of the first mill. While the Ladd operation is reckoned as the beginning of sugar production in Hawai'i, there are reports, most of them fragmentary, of other even earlier efforts. One report says, "Old residents speak of sugar and molasses of a coarse quality having been manufactured here in sufficient quantities for ordinary domestic consumption in 1828."1 Reports of the early attempts are scattered, most are documented poorly, if at all, there are inconsistencies among them, and there has never been a comprehensive summary of them. It is the purpose of this paper to review and compare the reports of sugar making in Hawai'i prior to 1835. SUGARCANE IN HAWAl'l FIRST INTRODUCTION Sugarcane is not indigenous to Hawai'i. Its center of origin is in the Indonesian Archipelago, where abundant variation can still be found in the genus Saccharum.2 Long before there was recorded history, sugarcane was distributed throughout the lands of the South Pacific. It also moved, but somewhat later, to India, China and, eventually, to the lands of the Mediterranean Sea.3 Sugarcane was among the food crops brought by the Polynesians from islands to the south, who settled in Hawai'i a thousand or more Robert L.

    Heʻe Wahine I Ka Lani: Goddess in the Surf by Ian ʻAkahi Masterson In Hawaiʻi, historian David Malo (1951) calls surfing a national pastime and a popular betting sport, indicating that all ages and both sexes enjoyed riding waves on various crafts. John Papa Iʻi (1959) describes the places that King Kamehameha enjoyed surfing, and how he would surf with his favorite wife Kaʻahumanu. Hawaiian Mythology portrays many legendary figures who enjoyed surfing with their intimate partners, like Palani and ‘Iewale of Kahana, as well as Pili Aʻama and Kapūʻewai of Waimea in Koʻolau, Oʻahu. Even the youngest of the Pele clan, Hiʻiaka, surfed off Haʻena, Kauaʻi, with the high chief Lohiʻau, after she and her brother Kanemilohaʻi revived him. There are also many women surfers who hold their own in the surf, displaying great prowess and attracting the highest ranks of kapu chiefs with their beauty and mana—chiefesses like Keaomelemele of Kealohilani, Keleanuinohoanaʻapiʻapi of Maui, Hinahanaiakamālama of Hilo, and Māmala of Kou Harbor in Honolulu. While Keaomelemele is in training, Kelea, Hina, and Māmala all surf with their suitors at some point in their stories. This correlation hints at the literary evidence presented about surfing women within Polynesian oral traditions. In a society that is believed by some historians to be restrictive towards the rights and freedom of women, what was the position of women with regards to surfing as a daily and a ritual activity in Hawaiʻi? Although we officially entered the fall season on September 22nd, we are still enjoying warm summer days. The second lockdown has finally ended (for now, anyway), so we can return to our favorite shops, including florists, and regain some sense of normalcy in our daily lives. Sayonara to the Itos! Consul General Koichi Ito and Mrs. Misako Ito ended their three-year assignment in Hawaii in August. Mrs. Ito returned to Japan on August 16 while the Consul General left in September. Earl Shimabukuro and I were fortunate to be able to visit Mrs. Ito at her residence on August 10 to say goodbye and to present her with a Earl Shimabukuro and Susan Hirate farewell gift from our chapter. bid farewell to Mrs. Ito Earl selected a beautiful blue gray container from among his many custom-made one-of-a-kind vases to present to her. Mrs. Ito was very touched to receive such a special gift. (see photo) Mrs. Ito was a very active member of our chapter, attending our luncheons A water lily— and workshops. I remember her helping to dress some members in their looks up at the autumn sky yukata at our moon-viewing luncheon at Yoshiya Restaurant in 2018. She thinks about tomorrow was also our guest speaker at the New Year Brunch at Waialae Country Akimi Hatayama Club. During her stay, she came to appreciate the friendly nature of our local culture, and loved being called “aunty” at the various local events that she participated in.

    Hawaii Statewide Assessment of Forest Conditions and Resource Strategy 2010 Issue 6: Conservation of Native Biodiversity Overview The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated archipelago in the world, situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean more than 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) from the nearest continent. Due to its extreme isolation and climactic conditions, Hawaii is characterized by high levels of endemism in both its native animals and plants, with over 10,000 species found nowhere else on earth. Although thousands of Hawaiian species have yet to be described, the estimated number of native species is thought to include more than 14,000 terrestrial, 100 freshwater, and 6,500 marine taxa. For more than 70 million years, the evolution of new species vastly exceeded losses to extinction. Yet after the arrival of humans to the islands, about 700 years ago, numerous extinctions have occurred and many more species are threatened. These losses include more than half of the endemic birds, including flightless ducks, rails, and ibis, hundreds of plant species, and possibly thousands of lesser known taxa such as terrestrial insects and spiders that were lost before they were ever described. Because of this extreme isolation, relatively few species have colonized the archipelago and only a subset of these successfully establish populations over the islands’ 70 million year history. Those that did, however, found a diversity of habitat types because of elevation and climate gradients. Extremely limited or no gene flow from their distant, original populations, facilitated the rapid adaptation of colonists to their novel environments. For many such colonists, unique adaptations occurred simultaneously among populations that were isolated from one another on an island and between islands.
