Boston Personalizmi adlı felsefe ekolünün kurucusu olan Borden Parker Bowne (1847-1910), kendini bilme ve irade niteliklerine sahip olan varlıkların yani Tanrı ve insanın kişilikli olduğunu, bu niteliklerden en az birisini taşımayan varlıkların ise kişilikli olmadığını düşündüğü için, Tanrı’ya kişilik atfedilmesini gerekli gören felsefeciler grubunda yer alır. Bowne’a göre Tanrı’nın kişilikli olması, Onun kendisini ve faaliyetlerini bilip belirlediği ve yönettiği anlamına gelir. Bowne’un anlayışına göre, mutlak olan Tanrı’nın kişiliğine karşı öne sürülen itirazlar, insan kişiliği için geçerli olan kısıtlılıkların Tanrı’nın kişiliğini de sınırlandırdıkları yanılgısından kaynaklanır. Bu yanılgının temelinde de beşerî kişilikle Tanrısal kişiliğin tamamen aynı olduğu zannı yatar. Halbuki kişilik; tam yani mükemmel kişilik ve sonlu ya da eksik kişilik olmak üzere iki ayrı kategori halinde ele alınmalıdır. Bu ayrıma göre mükemmel kişilik yalnızca sonsuz bir varlık olan Tanrı açısından mümkündür. -

She has taught at Elmira College, Mount Holyoke, and for twelve years was professor of applied theology at Garrett Biblical Institute. In 1950 she became professor of applied theology at the Pacific School of Religion, in Berkeley, California. Published by Abingdon Press, New York, Nashville. Copyright by Stone & Pierce 1968. The material was prepared for Religion Online by Ted & Winnie Brock. Dr. Harkness discusses first the relation of prayer to the basic structures of Christian faith. The second section book deals with ways of praying and the third with the psychological and social aspects of prayer. Introduction A new order of peace and justice, abatement of economic and racial tension, the banishment of ignorance, poverty, and disease will not come about solely through prayer. Nevertheless, without the spiritual and moral resources which prayer exists to heighten, the action required for dealing with such issues is likely to go on being as limited and as misdirected by self-interest as we now see it. A published Princeton Theological Seminary master’s thesis written by Ernest Shaw Lyght is the earliest book-length examination of the philosophical and religious roots of King’s thought.1 Kenneth Smith and Ira Zepp, Jr., provided a vastly more informed scholarly treatment of intellectual influences on King’s thought, including the philosophy of personalism.2 This philosophy was developed and taught at Boston University from 1876 to roughly the end of the 1960s. -

BOOK REVIEWS Rosemary Skinner Keller, Georgia Harkness: For Such a Time as This. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1992. 336 pp. $19.95. Rosemary Skinner Keller's biography of Georgia Harkness is a spar kling tribute to one of the great women of twentieth century Methodism. It is a model of historical scholarship and writing style that deserves wide reading. Georgia Harkness was a pioneer woman in professional life who bridged academic religion with practical Christianity. Through her teaching at two colleges and two theological seminaries, numerous books and published articles, and countless addresses and sermoits she demonstrated ' that words were her medium of ministry. She regarded herself as a "folk theologian" with a gift to communicate in nonacademic language to laity and clergy. The book's subtitle indicates that this is a study primarily of a woman committed to achieve equal opportunities for women at all levels of the church. "For Such a Time as This" was Harkness' 1940_article challeng ing Methodist women to assume a more active role as they were forming the Women's Society of Christian Service after church union in 1939. From her earliest article in 1924 advocating ordination of women through the joy she expressed to the 1972 General Conference after it approved crea tion of the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women, Harkness worked diligently for the advancement of women and deserved the standing ovation of the General Conference of 1956 when the ordina tion of women finally was approved. Often as the only female in the male dominated domains of, higher education or ecumenical committees Harkness felt she represented all women as she attacked the open sexism of Protestantism as well as Methodism. -

HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN AFRICAN AMERICAN PHILOSOPHY: THE INTELLECTUAL CAREER OF GILBERT HAVEN JONES By Robert Munro A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of African American and African Studies – Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN AFRICAN AMERICAN PHILOSOPHY: THE INTELLECTUAL CAREER OF GILBERT HAVEN JONES By Robert Munro This dissertation examines the intellectual career of the early African American philosopher, Gilbert Haven Jones. Jones was the first African American scholar to receive a PhD in philosophy in Germany (University of Jena in 1909). In order to thoroughly analyze the life and work of Jones, this dissertation advocates a framework that combines a historical and philosophical methodology. My use of this framework is a response to the lack of historical considerations undertaken by contemporary African American philosophers. The dissertation examines Jones’ works including an undergraduate essay written at Wilberforce University, his dissertation, and his published book, Education in Theory and Practice. Philosophically, I analyze Jones’ work through the lens of personalism, as he was one of the first contributors to the field from both a mainstream and African American context. This project also, for the first time, contributes and analyzes the first English translation of Jones’ doctoral dissertation.
