The first director of the School was Ralph Tyler Flewelling, who previously served as chair of the deparment and was instrumental in getting the School approved. These records primarily contain the administrative files of the early School directors, beginning with Flewelling, followed by Daniel S. Robinson, W.H. Werkmeister, and John Hospers, and professional files and some personal files of Flewelling and Robinson, as well as several faculty members, including B.A.G Fuller, Heinrich Gomperz, Paul Helsel, and F.C.S. Schiller. In addition, the records contain files on the James Harmon Hoose Library of Philosophy, "The Personalist", and selected students. The dates of the collection are 1889-1988 (bulk dates, 1903-1977). Language of Material: While the bulk of the material contained in this collection are in English, there are also items in German, primarily in the Henirich Gomperz series. Historical note The University of Southern California (USC) School of Philosophy, which began initially as the Department of Philosophy, was officially established in May 1929. The first director of the new school was Ralph Tyler Flewelling, a professor of philosophy at USC since 1917 and head of the philosophy department at the time. In December 1929, the School moved into the newly completed Seeley Wintersmith Mudd Memorial Hall of Philosophy, which still serves as its home on the USC University Park Campus (UPC). In addition to offices, classrooms, and lecture halls, Mudd Memorial Hall is also home to the James Harmon Hoose Library of Philosophy named for noted USC philosophy professor and the first department head James Harmon Hoose. Prior to moving to Mudd Memorial Hall, the School and its predecessor were housed in the George Finley Bovard Administration Building, which opened in 1921. The north wing of the building was called the James Harmon Hoose Hall of Philosophy, and included the philosophy library. The School published the journal "The Personalist" beginning in 1920, a quarterly focusing on philosophy, religion, and literature. Flewelling was the founding editor. In 1980, the School changed the journal's name to the "Pacific Philosophical Quarterly". Early directors of the School were Ralph Tyler Flewelling (1929-1945); Daniel Summer Robinson (1945-1954); William H. Werkmeister (1954-1966); and John Hospers (1968-1988). In addition, other notable faculty members included H. Weldon Carr, F.C.S. Schiller, B.A.G. Fuller, Heinrich Gomperz, and Paul Helsel, as well as F.A. Hoernle. Scope and Content The School of Philosophy, which began as the Department of Philosophy, was established by the USC Board of Trustees in 1929. The records of the University of Southern California School of Philosophy primarily document the activities of school directors and faculty members from 1929-1969. In addition, the records contain files pertaining to the professional and personal activities, including research and publications, of these individuals. In addition, the collection consists of series focusing on the James Harmon Hoose Library of Philosophy and the journal "The Personalist", as well as to students applying and/or accepted for admission to the School. The records consist of brochures, clippings, correspondence, Finding Aid of the University of 50951373 2 Southern California School of Philosophy records 5095 manuscripts, memorandums, photographs, programs, publications, and reports. The overall dates of the records are 1889-1978, 1988. The Directors represented in the records are the first director, Ralph T. Flewelling (1929-1945); Daniel S. Robinson (1946-1954); W.H. Werkmeister (1954-1966); and John Hospers (1968-1988). The files of faculty members include B.A.G. Fuller, Heinrich Gomperz, Paul Helsel, and F.C.S. Schiller. Boston Personalizmi adlı felsefe ekolünün kurucusu olan Borden Parker Bowne (1847-1910), kendini bilme ve irade niteliklerine sahip olan varlıkların yani Tanrı ve insanın kişilikli olduğunu, bu niteliklerden en az birisini taşımayan varlıkların ise kişilikli olmadığını düşündüğü için, Tanrı’ya kişilik atfedilmesini gerekli gören felsefeciler grubunda yer alır. Bowne’a göre Tanrı’nın kişilikli olması, Onun kendisini ve faaliyetlerini bilip belirlediği ve yönettiği anlamına gelir. Bowne’un anlayışına göre, mutlak olan Tanrı’nın kişiliğine karşı öne sürülen itirazlar, insan kişiliği için geçerli olan kısıtlılıkların Tanrı’nın kişiliğini de sınırlandırdıkları yanılgısından kaynaklanır. Bu yanılgının temelinde de beşerî kişilikle Tanrısal kişiliğin tamamen aynı olduğu zannı yatar. Halbuki kişilik; tam yani mükemmel kişilik ve sonlu ya da eksik kişilik olmak üzere iki ayrı kategori halinde ele alınmalıdır. Bu ayrıma göre mükemmel kişilik yalnızca sonsuz bir varlık olan Tanrı açısından mümkündür.

  • Borden Parker Bowne: the First Thoroughgoing Personalist
    Methodist History, 36:1 (October 1997) BORDEN PARKER BOWNE: THE FIRST THOROUGHGOING PERSONALIST RUFUS BURROW, JR. Personalism is the first systematic American philosophy' associated with a single institution, viz., Boston University. In addition, its chief early pro­ genitors were primarily affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Most of these were white males, with Georgia Harkness ( 1891-1974) as the most outstanding female representative. Martin Luther King, Jr., is the African American generally associated with this tradition, although John Wesley Edward Bowen (1855-1933), a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was actually the first African American to study personalism under Borden P. Bowne and Henry C. Sheldon at Boston University. We have heard little about Personalism since the late 1960s. This is due partly to the retirement and deaths of its chief representatives and the fact that their students have not taken the personalistic mantle and forged ahead. However, there are periodic signs of a resurgent interest in personalistic phi­ losophy, theology, and ethics. In this essay I introduce the present generation to the first systematizer of American Personalism, Borden Parker Bowne (1847-1910). I shall discuss some of Personalism's chief tenets, the background of Bowne, persons who influenced his development, his influence on others, and his stance on major social issues. Personalism Personalism is any philosophy for which PERSON2 is the dominant or fundamental reality, and for which the person is the highest-not the only­ intrinsic value. A published Princeton Theological Seminary master’s thesis written by Ernest Shaw Lyght is the earliest book-length examination of the philosophical and religious roots of King’s thought.1 Kenneth Smith and Ira Zepp, Jr., provided a vastly more informed scholarly treatment of intellectual influences on King’s thought, including the philosophy of personalism.2 This philosophy was developed and taught at Boston University from 1876 to roughly the end of the 1960s.

Jones was the first African American scholar to receive a PhD in philosophy in Germany (University of Jena in 1909). In order to thoroughly analyze the life and work of Jones, this dissertation advocates a framework that combines a historical and philosophical methodology. My use of this framework is a response to the lack of historical considerations undertaken by contemporary African American philosophers. The dissertation examines Jones’ works including an undergraduate essay written at Wilberforce University, his dissertation, and his published book, Education in Theory and Practice. Philosophically, I analyze Jones’ work through the lens of personalism, as he was one of the first contributors to the field from both a mainstream and African American context. This project also, for the first time, contributes and analyzes the first English translation of Jones’ doctoral dissertation. Yet things do pass as in a dream and few recall the shining present and the illuminating absent—the words are Brightman’s—of just thirty five years ago, when first I came to Boston. So bear with me as I try to call up the shadows of yesteryear, of what we have been and whereon we build. When I first came to B.U. in 1960, Dr. Brightman had been dead but a Sabbath of years and there were still graduate students around who had taken his courses. Bowne’s writings were on the required reading list for qualifying exams and the typical dissertation would deal with a topic such as “Categories in Plato, Kant and Bowne.” That, though, was changing fast: my appointment was a part of the conscious effort to broaden the department, up to then solidly Methodist and Personalistic Idealist—though it would be another four years before we would timidly appoint a Catholic.

Bowne was called to Boston University in 1876 as professor of philosophy and the first dean of the graduate school. He primarily influenced men and women who attended Boston University, many of whom, like Bowne, were affiliated with. the Methodist Episcopal Church. McConnell wrote extensively on the religious significance of per­ sonalism. His fundamental audience was church lay people. He left the more philosophical and academic studies on personalism to colleagues like Edgar Sheffield Brightman (1884-1953). McConnell's personalism may be characterized as that philosophy for which person is the fundamental principle of explanation and the basic moral unit. Reality, then, is personal, or a society of persons, who have infinite, inviolable worth and dignity, and therefore should be respected and treated accordingly.

Whitman and American Personalistic Philosophy Bernard Schmidt Abstract Traces Whitman’s influence on the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century philosophical movement known as “Personalism”–”a nonempirical philosophy in which the self obtains knowl- edge from a mighty power of reason, which is creative and can fashion reality from its own ideas”– and argues that ”the American writer who first formally used the term ‘Personalism’ was Walt Whitman” and that ”wherever the Personalistic path leads, it should not be forgotten that there was a distinct philosophical school that formally began with Whitman’s article ’Personalism.’” WHIT MAN AND AMERICAN PERSONALISTIC PHILOSOPHY BERNARD SCHMIDT WHILE TRANSCENDENTALISM CLEARLY WAS the crowning product of the American Renaissance, its very prominence has created a critical myopia in the study of American philosophy of the mid-nineteenth century. For concurrent with the rise of Transcendentalism, another less prominent but extremely important philosophy was growing in New England: Personalism. This essay will demonstrate how American Personalism had its roots in Whitman's writing, and how it was basic to his thought. A theistic form of idealism whose proponents consider the con­ scious, perceiving self the center of reality, Personalism maintains as its dominant concept that the intelligence of self explains theories, thoughts, and even God, who is usually considered a leader of active perceiving selves.
