They go by road, by air, by sea, by rail and any other way they can. But do you know people travelled long distances even in those days when there were no trains or aeroplanes in India. India had been in contact with the outside world commercially right from about the middle of the third millennium B.C. Even though India is surrounded by sea on three sides and the Himalayan in the north but that did not stop Indians from interacting with the rest of the world. In fact they travelled far and wide and left their cultural footprints wherever they went. In return they also brought home ideas, impressions, customs and traditions from these distant lands. However, the most remarkable aspect of this contact has been the spread of Indian culture and civilization in various parts of the world, especially Central Asia, South East Asia, China, Japan, Korea etc. What is most remarkable of this spread is that it was not a spread by means of conquest or threat to life of an individual or society but by means of voluntary acceptance of cultural and spiritual values of India. In this lesson we shall find out how Indian culture spread to other countries and the impact it had on these countries.This lesson also brings forward the beautiful idea that peace and friendship with other nations, other societies, other religions and other cultures help our lives and make it more meaningful. -

DEPARTMENT OF INDO-TIBETAN STUDIES DIPLOMA COURSE Three papers each of three-hour duration carrying 100 marks. 20% shall be awarded by internal assessment. Oral Examination in modern spoken Tibetan carrying 100 marks. PAPER-I (Language) 1. Grammar 20 2. Composition & Comprehension 30 3. Translation 15 4. Essay writing 15 Syllabus 1. Grammar- The candidates will be required to show a general knowledge of parts of speech, Number, person, Case, Tense and Samāsa. 2. Composition-Candidates will be required to correct common errors, frame sentences with adjective derived from nouns on common use. 3. Translation- Prose and poetry passage in Hindi or English will be set for translation into Tibetan and a prose and poetry unseen passage on Tibetan will be set for translation in to Hindi or English or Tibetan equivalents for difficult words or phrases will be given along with the passage. 4. Essay writing- Candidates will be required to write an essay on any three out of at least five given subjects. Their command of language will be taken into consideration. Books for reference: 1. Sum-cu pa of Thonmi Sambhota 2. Textbooks of Colloquial Tibetan by G. Roerich. 3. Introduction to the Grammar of the Tibetan Language by S.C. Das. 4. Religious Life and History of the Emanated Heart -son Thukse Dawa Gyeltshen* Lham Dorji** Introduction This article relates a few episodes from the biography of Tuksey Dawa Gyeltshen (thugs sres zla ba rgyel mtshen), the heart son of Terton Pema Lingpa. Titled "sprul pa'i sres chen zla' ba rgyal mtshen gyi rnam thar ring chen rgyen mrzes (The Ornament of Precious Jewel: the biography of the Great Emanated Son Dawa Gyeltshen), the biography was written by Jatshon Mebar (Ja' tshon me 'bar). It is difficult to ascertain the exact period of this biographical compilation, but Jatshon Mebar acknowledges that it was Benchen Gyep (dben chen rgyep) and Thukse Dawa's loyal patron Tenzin (bston 'zin) were inspiration behind the work. It is now one of the rare documents on Thukse Dawa's spiritual accomplishments and other accounts of his life. Like any other Buddhist biography, it contains elaborate descriptive accounts of Thukse Dawa's life such as miraculous birth, mythical beginning of early life, destiny of a child's religious roles, religious activities, mystical experiences, description of his good deeds, events surrounding his death and lastly his teachings. Im März 2008 nahm ihn die chinesische bewaffnete Polizei gewaltsam fest. Auf die 42tägige Haft, während der er unbewußt geschlagen wurde, nahm er eine Videobotschaft über seine Verhaftung, Folter und die allgemeine Grausamkeit der Chinesen in Tibet auf, die er dann bei YouTube hochlud. Am 20. August 2011 wurde er erneut festgenommen und ist seitdem verschwunden Die zweite Festnahme erfolgte, nachdem der Tibetische Dienst von Voice of America am 3. September 2008 ein Video ausstrahlte, in dem Jigme eingehend über die Sehnsüchte und Hoffnungen des tibetischen Volkes sprach und die Folter und unmenschliche Behandlung, die die Mönche von Labrang wegen ihrer Teilnahme an den Demonstrationen von 2008 zu ertragen hatten, schilderte. Nachdem er sich fast zwei Monate lang versteckt gehalten hatte, nahm ihn am 4. November 2008 eine große Zahl von Kräften der PAP und des PSB fest, die in mehreren Militärlastwagen zum Haus eines Tibeters gefahren war, wo er sich versteckt hatte. Am 3. Mai 2009 kam er schließlich wieder frei. Am 20. August 2011 wurde Jigme Guri erneut in der Stadt Tsoe (chin. Hezou), TAP Kanlho, Provinz Gansu, festgenommen. Davor durchsuchte das Sicherheitspersonal sein Zimmer und beschlagnahmte seinen Computer und seine CDs. Etwa zehn Mönche und einige weitere Personen wurden Zeugen des Geschehens. -

This deepening crisis in Tibet is fuelled by China’s total disregard for the religious beliefs, cultural values and reasonable political aspirations of the Tibetan people. The crisis grows out of China’s political repression, cultural assimilation, economic marginalisation, social discrimination and environmental destruction in Tibet. We, the Kashag, continue to appeal not to resort to drastic actions, including self-immolations, because life is precious. Unfortunately, self-immolations continue to persist in Tibet. It is therefore our sacred duty to support and amplify the aspirations of Tibetan people: the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to his homeland and freedom for Tibet. The Central Tibetan Administration believes that collective action by the international community can persuade Chinese leaders to put in place lenient policies that respect the aspirations of the Tibetan people—and at the same time, do not undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the People’s Republic of China. With this goal in mind, we offer this report to global citizens and leaders. It presents in-depth examination and analysis of the policy areas that relentlessly rob Tibetans of their culture and language, and undermine their chosen way of life. These four critical policy areas include interference in and suppression of both religion and language, the forced removal of Tibetan nomads from the grasslands and the population transfer policy that moves Chinese to the Tibetan Plateau and reduces Tibetans to an increasingly disenfranchised and marginalised minority in their own land.
