PART ONE: THERE IS MORE TO THE MYSTERY The story is told of a little girl whose parents had taken her forward to receive Holy Communion. Disappointed with the small piece of bread she was given to dip in the cup, the child cried loudly, “I want more! I want more!” While embarrassing to her parents and amusing to the pastor and congregation, this little girl’s cry accurately expresses the feelings of many contemporary United Methodist people. We want more! We want more than we are receiving from the sacrament of Holy Communion as it is practiced in our churches. According to the results of a survey conducted by the General Board of Discipleship prior to the 2000 General Conference, there is a strong sense of the importance of Holy Communion in the life of individual Christians and of the church. Unfortunately, there is at least an equally strong sense of the absence of any meaningful understanding of Eucharistic theology and practice. United Methodists recognize that grace and spiritual power are available to them in the sacrament, but too often they do not feel enabled to receive these gifts and apply them in their lives. Many laypeople complain of sloppy practice, questionable theology, and lack of teaching and guidance. Both clergy and laity recognize the crucial need for better education of pastors in sacramental theology and practice. The concern for improved education is coupled with a call for accountability. Bishops, district superintendents, and other annual conference and general church authorities are urged to prepare their pastors better and to hold them accountable for their sacramental theology, practice, and teaching. Many of the people surveyed are plainly resentful of the lack of leadership they believe they are receiving in these areas. These results are troubling and must provoke the church to reexamination and recommitment. These results are also exciting and challenging! They reveal a deep hunger for the riches of divine grace made available to us through Holy Communion, for real communion with Jesus Christ and with Christian people. They show that United Methodists want our faith to be enlivened and made more relevant to our daily lives. How can our church best respond to the wonderful hunger of its people for “this holy mystery” (“A Service of Word and Table I,” BOW; page 39)? United Methodists share with many other Christians an increased interest in the study and celebration of the sacraments. For the last several decades we have been actively seeking to recover and revitalize appreciation of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Our current services of the Baptismal Covenant and Word and Table are the fruit of a long process of development that began in the 1960’s and culminated in their adoption by the 1984 General Conference and publication in The United Methodist Hymnal approved in 1988. The change in location of these sacramental rituals from the back to the front of the Hymnal is an intentional expression of their significance in the life of the community of faith. This Holy Mystery: A United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion is submitted to the 2004 General Conference with the same purpose. Both of these documents reflect United Methodism’s efforts to reclaim its sacramental heritage and to be in accord with ecumenical movements in sacramental theology and practice. This Holy Mystery is characterized by the effort to avoid rigidity on the one hand and indifference on the other. Neither extreme is true to our heritage nor faithful to the Spirit who leads the church forward in the work of making disciples living toward the new creation. The document is made up of two main parts. The expository introduction titled “Part One: There Is More to the Mystery” describes the document’s development and provides grounding in historical tradition and sacramental theology. “Part Two: Christ Is Here: Experiencing the Mystery ” is organized by principles. Under each principle, “Background” provides an explanation for the principle, while “Practice” provides guidelines for applying the principle. The principles make assertions that are truthful and doctrinally clear. They honor the historic and ecumenical center of the Christian church’s theology and practice. The committee has endeavored to explain in the “Background” sections how the principles are rooted in the theology and practice of Christians past and present, particularly United Methodist Christians. In the “Practice” sections we have applied the principles to contemporary sacramental practices of the church in the various contexts of United Methodism. The church is always universal and particular, catholic and local, united and diverse. United Methodists vary geographically, racially, and culturally. This Holy Mystery invites United Methodists to share common understandings while allowing for appropriate, faithful applications. Some United Methodist practices differ from those of other Christian traditions. Being truthful about these differences recognizes our ties and responsibility to the wider church while claiming God’s work in leading us to affirm distinctive understandings and practices. Both within our own United Methodist community and in fellowship with other traditions, we reject cavalier or arrogant attitudes. We seek to strengthen the bond of unity by “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15) as, with humility and openness, we acknowledge our principles, explain our backgrounds, and affirm our practices. Names of the Sacrament Several terms naming the sacrament are used in past and present Christianity. In This Holy Mystery some are used more than others, but all are largely synonymous. The Lord’s Supper reminds us that Jesus Christ is the host and that we participate at Christ’s invitation. This title suggests the eating of a meal, sometimes called the Holy Meal, and makes us think of the meals that Jesus ate with various people both before his death and after his resurrection. THM clearly states, “An ordained elder or a person authorized under the provision of The Book of Discipline presides at all celebrations of Holy Communion” (THM, “Presiding Ministers: Elders and Licensed Local Pastors,” 25-26; Book of Discipline 2012 ¶ 316.1, 332, 340.2.b). 2. Who may not preside? Persons who are neither ordained nor otherwise authorized for sacramental ministry under the provisions of The Book of Discipline 2012 (¶316.1, 332, 340.2.b) may not preside at services of Holy Communion in The United Methodist Church. 3. We have two elders appointed to our congregation. How many authorized presiders may “share” the Great Thanksgiving, and how should they divide it up to share it? Our authorized documents do not provide an explicit answer to this question, but THM does give us some hints. First, we need to remember that the Great Thanksgiving is a single dialogical prayer (rather than a “collection” of sacred words) shared between the presiding minister and the congregation. Therefore any sharing of the prayer needs to respect this character as communal prayer. Sharing of the prayer also needs to preserve the sense of the prayer as a single prayer. Also, there is no portion of this prayer that may be delegated to deacon or lay ministers. As THM notes, “an elder or authorized pastor leaders the congregation in praying the Great Thanksgiving, in which the whole assembly takes an active role.” (THM “The Great Thanksgiving,” 22 and “Presiding Ministers,” 26) Second, as THM indicates, “All elders or deacons who are present may be invited to…stand with the presider at the table, and assist in distributing the elements.” (THM “Presiding Ministers,” 26) THM seems to suggest, then, that even when there are multiple elders present, a single elder normally presides at the table.

ONE of the great changes made at the Reformation was the putting away of the altars at which the mediæval priests had offered the unbloody sacrifice, and the substituting, for such altars, of tables at which the faithful sat down to partake of the Lord's Supper. The Roman conception of a sacrificing priesthood was replaced by the Protestant one of an evangelical ministry of the Word and Sacraments. New views of the Eucharist, really old ones revived, led to new orders for the communion service, and the idea of the ordinance as a feast took the place of that which made it a sacrifice. Nor was it only among the extreme reformers that such views were to be found: The word " altar " finds no place in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, though it had a place in the First Prayer Book of King Edward VI.(') Even in the Church of Rome there were those who thought that the " feast " side of Holy Communion should be emphasised, as the well known picture of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci shows. In Scotland, Archbishop Hamilton, in the Catechism he published in 1552, calls upon the people to come to the " buird of God." Altars disappeared in Scotland(2) as in England at the Reformation ; but, whereas in the southern Kingdom they were replaced by more or less permanent wooden tables, in our land their place appears in many instances to have been left empty. It is possible, some might say probable, that in Scotland also a wooden table was set up where the former altar had stood.(3) The first Book of Discipline enjoined that among other things which each congregation should possess were " Tables for the ministration of the Lord's Supper " ; but these appear to have been usually temporary erections.

What is the most important thing for any good celebration? Food! As Christians, we have a very special meal that we eat together. It’s called Holy Communion or The Lord’s Supper. It’s named that because Jesus (the Lord) gave his friends this meal at his last supper before he was arrested and died on the cross. After Jesus rose again from the dead, his friends remembered that he had told them to keep celebrating this special meal as a way of remembering his sacrifice for them on the cross and celebrating their new life together as God’s family.     Evangelicals, Anglicans and Ritualism in Victorian England Nigel Scotland It is difficult today, with Liberal Catholic ascendancy in the Church of England, to imagine the shock which the advent of the Tractarian Movement caused in Protestant England in the early part of the nineteenth century. While High and Low Churchmen as well as Evangelicals differed considerably in their precise understanding of the formularies of the Church, they were nevertheless agreed in their Protestantism. The more perceptive soon realised that Tractarianism was no mere chimera and dire predictions of where the doctrinal stance of the early leaders would end were confirmed by the publication of Tract 90 by Newman. * Dr Scotland's article deals with the second phase which moved logically from doctrine to liturgical practice. The response of the Protestants was varied. Because of the revisionist rewriting of history by the Tractarians, the Parker Society published the writings of the sixteenth-century Reformers to confirm that the Church of England had been truly reformed. While these publications served a valuable purpose they did not stem the tide of liturgical revision towards Rome and eventually, in desperation, Protestants banded together in a large number of Societies of which Church Association was but one. Considerable intolerance was shown by both sides in the long-running dispute and each brought the other before the courts of the land. The English Church in medieval times had of course been part of the Western Roman Catholic Church presided over by the papacy. English worship in that era before the Reformation was characterized by a good deal of ritual centred on the mass and the sacramental system.

Communion is a repeated act of remembrance and centering while baptism is meant to be done once. Position: We celebrate the Communion at every Sunday morning Gathering. Communion is, and has been, central to Christian gatherings, worship, and practice. All who have faith in Christ are welcome to receive the bread and cup of the Lord as sure signs in remembrance of Christ’s body given and Christ’s blood poured out for us in his once-for-all sacrifice on the cross. We come to the table to meet with Christ, remembering his sacrificial death which brings forgiveness and renewal. Though we do it weekly, it is not an empty ritual. Communion is a time of centering as we remember what makes us a Christian and the Gospel call to live relentlessly for the cause of Christ’s kingdom! If parents are raising their children in the way of Jesus and helping them understand the beauty and mystery of the Gospel, then we welcome children participating in Communion under that parental guidance. We do not deem it necessary for children, nor anyone else, to have a comprehensive understanding of Christian doctrine in order to partake. There is no sense in allowing children to participate too soon; we want to be sure they have general understanding of the Gospel. So, as long as parents are committed to an ongoing dialogue with their children about what it means to remember and celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ through communion and what it means to follow Christ, living as one of his sent people than we encourage children to participate in our weekly celebration of communion.

At the sacrament and among the bands I was enabled to pour out my soul in prayer, and carried them all with me to the throne of grace.”2 Clearly, “bands”, as found in the above journal entry of Charles Wesley does not refer to the musical ensembles we might imagine today. One may wonder en brief whether the term has anything to do with pipe or brass bands that would accompany some 18th century religious ceremonies. Yet despite considerations like these, “bands” does not carry a musical connotation of any sort. This 18th century usage derives rather from the Moravian based small group settings developed by the Wesley brothers.3 Nevertheless, inclination to read music into the term and the table fellowship described by Charles Wesley, despite the absence of such meaning, appropriately introduces our discussion. I would like to suggest, that we as Methodists, laity and clergy, would benefit from regular singing and setting of the Sanctus during the celebration of communion. By regular singing, I mean each time that communion is celebrated within a Methodist Church. By regular composing, a newly composed Sanctus setting need not appear each time the sacrament of communion is celebrated.     HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion (the Lord’s Supper) is a Sacrament that can be a part of the wedding service. The time for this Sacrament to occur is after the Declaration of Marriage and before the Blessing of the Marriage. The observance of Holy Communion was given to us by Christ himself in the upper room; he gave the bread and cup to His disciples. With bread and wine, the promises of God are made visible and concrete. All that the life, death, and resurrection of Christ mean is focused in this Sacrament. Though the waters of baptism, we are born into Christ’s family. That family is nourished and sustained at the communion table. Therefore, all who are baptized and being nurtured in the faith of Jesus Christ are invited to come to this table. We are invited to come humbly trusting God’s mercy, rejoicing in all God has done for us. Though we are baptized once, Holy Communion renews everything for which our baptism was the sign and seal. Holy Communion is more than a recalling of events of long ago. In the Sacrament we participate in all that God’s coming in Christ means. The power and presence of Christ is a reality in this gathering at His table. We are joined anew to Him who is the source o life. Therefore all who intend to lead a Christian life are invited to receive the bread and cup.
