  • Town Tree Cover in Bridgend County Borough
1 Town Tree Cover in Bridgend County Borough Understanding canopy cover to better plan and manage our urban trees 2 Foreword Introducing a world-first for Wales is a great pleasure, particularly as it relates to greater knowledge about the hugely valuable woodland and tree resource in our towns and cities. We are the first country in the world to have undertaken a country-wide urban canopy cover survey. The resulting evidence base set out in this supplementary county specific study for Bridgend County Borough will help all of us - from community tree interest groups to urban planners and decision-makers in local Emyr Roberts Diane McCrea authorities and our national government - to understand what we need to do to safeguard this powerful and versatile natural asset. Trees are an essential component of our urban ecosystems, delivering a range of services to help sustain life, promote well-being, and support economic benefits. They make our towns and cities more attractive to live in - encouraging inward investment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings – as well as removing air borne pollutants and connecting people with nature. They can also mitigate the extremes of climate change, helping to reduce storm water run-off and the urban heat island. Natural Resources Wales is committed to working with colleagues in the Welsh Government and in public, third and private sector organisations throughout Wales, to build on this work and promote a strategic approach to managing our existing urban trees, and to planting more where they will

  • The Blitz and Its Legacy
THE BLITZ AND ITS LEGACY 3 – 4 SEPTEMBER 2010 PORTLAND HALL, LITTLE TITCHFIELD STREET, LONDON W1W 7UW ABSTRACTS Conference organised by Dr Mark Clapson, University of Westminster Professor Peter Larkham, Birmingham City University (Re)planning the Metropolis: Process and Product in the Post-War London David Adams and Peter J Larkham Birmingham City University [email protected] [email protected] London, by far the UK’s largest city, was both its worst-damaged city during the Second World War and also was clearly suffering from significant pre-war social, economic and physical problems. As in many places, the wartime damage was seized upon as the opportunity to replan, sometimes radically, at all scales from the City core to the county and region. The hierarchy of plans thus produced, especially those by Abercrombie, is often celebrated as ‘models’, cited as being highly influential in shaping post-war planning thought and practice, and innovative. But much critical attention has also focused on the proposed physical product, especially the seductively-illustrated but flawed beaux-arts street layouts of the Royal Academy plans. Reconstruction-era replanning has been the focus of much attention over the past two decades, and it is appropriate now to re-consider the London experience in the light of our more detailed knowledge of processes and plans elsewhere in the UK. This paper therefore evaluates the London plan hierarchy in terms of process, using new biographical work on some of the authors together with archival research; product, examining exactly what was proposed, and the extent to which the different plans and different levels in the spatial planning hierarchy were integrated; and impact, particularly in terms of how concepts developed (or perhaps more accurately promoted) in the London plans influenced subsequent plans and planning in the UK.

Vision Monmouth brings together a series of action based projects that are perceived to be deliverable in the medium term, which, together, will strengthen the presentation and viability of the town as a shopping and tourism destination, thereby improving the quality of life of those that live and work in the town and its hinterland. Vision Monmouth recognises that these ambitions need to be delivered through partnerships, involving and apportioning responsibility to those best placed to deliver, and ensuring that the collective skills, resources and knowledge of the town are employed to produce the most successful results. Vision Monmouth is not intended to be a strategic document but a summary of the key aspirations jointly held by partner organisations within the town. A vision of where the town could, and should, be in years to come.

  • Origin Op the Names Given to the Counties In
Origin of the Names Given to the Counties in Pennsylvania 37 ORIGIN OP THE NAMES GIVEN TO THE COUNTIES IN PENNSYLVANIA James McKirdy Proper names, i.e., names given to particular persons or places or things constitute one of the greatest savers of time and labor ever invented by man. An interesting experiment might be made by way of testing this. Let anyone try to converse on general topics for a period of, say, five miutes, without using a proper name, but substi- tuting for each proper name an adequate description of the person or thing or place that would otherwise have been identified by such particular name. This use of proper names is an inborn tendency of humans, as is shown by the fact that all races, be they low or high in intelligence, resort to this means of identification. While the study of surnames is full of interest and affords a curious insight into human nature, the study of place names is far more instructive. As an insect of by- gone ages is preserved in the bit of amber, so a great deal of the history of peoples and communities) is concealed in many, if not most, names of places. Worn and rounded and polished, like the round stones of a river bed or the shingle of a beach, they have been greatly changed in most instances from the original rugged form. An intensive, exhaustive study of a single place name, such as Indiana, the name of one of our States and the name of one of Pennsylvania's counties, would include a study of many peoples from the original Aryan invaders of the peninsula of Hindustan down thru the story of the Mohammedan con- quests to the great explorations of the fifteenth century.

  • Guildford, Autumn 2009
Guildford, the county town of Surrey, is located half way between London and Portsmouth. Guildford is situated in a gap on the North Downs where the River Wey breaks through the hills. The River Wey was one of the first navigable waterways in the country and stretches from Godalming to the Thames. The Hog's Back is where the North Downs narrows to a narrow ridge running from Farnham to Guildford. An extensive view of the surrounding countryside can be seen from both sides of the Hog’s Back. While attending Oxford University the famous author Lewis Carroll spent days at a time visiting his sisters who lived in Guildford and he is now buried in the cemetery on the Mount. Guildford began as a Saxon village and as a ford (called Guilden or Golden Ford). It is thought that it was named after the golden flowers that grew on the riverside or because of the golden sands on the banks of the river. St Mary’s Church is the oldest surviving building in the town. Guildford Cathedral (built in 1961) dominates Guildford town from its location on the top of Stag Hill. At night the cathedral is floodlit which creates a spectacular display. Guildford Museum is located on Quarry Street, a road running just off the High Street, with part of the museum housed in the gatehouse of Guildford Castle. Guildford Castle was originally constructed in the late 10th century. The castle fell into disrepair after the 14th century but it was restored in 2003-2004, revealing original crenellations and other features.

  • The Anglo-Saxon Origins of the West Midlands Shires
THE ANGLO-SAXON ORIGINS OF THE WEST MIDLANDS SHIRES Sheila Waddington Provincial organisation in late Anglo-Saxon England consisted of discrete territories organised to promote both defence and the maintenance of essential public works. In Mercia the territories comprised its shire structure: the regime through which defence, public works, governance, taxation, and administration of justice were undertaken. John Speed’s County Map of Staffordshire, 1611. Mary Evans Picture Library/Mapseeker Publishing Library/Mapseeker Picture 1611. Mary Evans County Map of Staffordshire, John Speed’s Shires and hundreds; Speed’s seventeenth-century map of Staffordshire reveals the units of tenth-century local government. www.historywm.com 19 ANGLO-SAXON ORIGINS OF THE SHIRES he territories which ultimately became Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Herefordshire have Anglo-Saxon origins. A close look at the last three shires Tsuggests the possibility of a territorial organisation dated to the British period, with bounds discernible in the Anglo-Saxon shire structure. The Shire and the Hundred The system of local government which existed over the greater part of England at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 had two tiers: the shire and the hundred. There is much debate about when these two structures were first in evidence in the west midlands and the more prevalent view is that they probably originated in Wessex and were later imposed early in the tenth century after the West Saxons annexed western Mercia. Both the terms ‘shire’ and ‘hundred’ are imprecise ones, and their uses, even as late as the Conquest, may be inconsistent. A ‘shire’ was the Old English word for any area of jurisdiction or control carved out of a larger one, and did not refer necessarily to a territory which later became a modern-day county.

  • Bucks Prisoners
Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies Bucks Prisoners The courts of Buckinghamshire have seen charges brought for all sorts of illicit activities. Between them the Court of Quarter Sessions and Court of Assize have punished the people of the county for a range of offences from the trivial to the capital. As laws have changed the character of the cases brought have altered with them. Some look slightly peculiar by 21st Century standards—few today would feel that Peter Horton of Iver’s offence of keeping a bowling alley (for which he was fined £2 in 1690, worth around £175 today) is something that should be occupying the court’s attention. Later convictions can bear the mark of desperation as much as deliquency; James Roads’s conviction for the theft of bread and mutton in 1842 has the look of a man trying to feed his family more than a criminal mastermind at work. Standards of justice have also changed; it wasn’t until the judicial reforms of the 19th Century (notably the Jervis Acts of 1848) that anything like modern standards were implemented. As late as 1746, justices were still being advised by judicial manuals to commit the accused for trial, even where it was apparent that the evidence exonerated them. Those tried and imprisoned could therefore be anywhere from debtor to hardened criminal to starving to entirely innocent. Exploring the records of the criminal courts are therefore potentially relevant to all family historians. This guide will provide a brief introduction to crime and punishment in the county, and takes you through some of the sources at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies (CBS) you can use to discover more details about your family’s criminal past.
