Nopo-Wolpyeong section included in the national rail network: Gijang Metro gains momentum

Gijang welcomes the final confirmation of the -Yangsan-Ulsan metropolitan railway plan in the government's 4th national railway net- work construction plan, and plans to push ahead with Gijang's long-awaited project, the Gijang Metro project. The confirmed route this time is from Nopo in Busan to Ulsan KTX station via Wolpyeong, Jeonggwan-eup, Gijang-gun, and Mugeo in Ulsan Metropolitan City. It includes the Nopo-Wolpyeong section, which is a connection section of Line 1 of the ‘Metro Jeonggwan Line’, which Gijang-gun is promoting as a priority project. When the Nopo-Wolpyeong section is connected to the Jeonggwan Line, it is expected to meet the transport demands of Jeonggwan New Town, improve accessibility to the down- town area of Busan, and build a metropolitan transportation network. This is an outcome that Gijang-gun officials have achieved by making recommendations since October last year by visiting relevant govern- ment departments. Meanwhile, Gijang is actively pursuing plans for the KTX Ieum stop and shorten the interval between trains on the . The KTX Ieum runs from Cheongnyangni in Seoul to Singyeongju Station, Taehwagang Station, and Bujeon Station on the Donghae Line. Gijang aims to build a KTX Ieum stop by using the Donghae Line sta- tion in the Gijang area where trains pass. Gijang is rapidly emerging as a world-class tourist attraction thanks to the Osiria Tourism Complex and natural tourism resources. There are 13 industrial complexes in- cluding the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, and a new town with a capacity of 120,000 people which have either been completed or are being built and as such metro connection and KTX stations are essential.
