Food and nutrition security debate This is TRANSMANGO project report on food and nutrition security debate and issues in Latvia prepared in the framework of Project’s Work package 2 Task 2.3 “National level desk based research”. TRANSMANGO (Assessment of the impact of drivers of change on Europe’s food and nutrition security) aims to obtain a comprehensive picture of the effects of the global drivers of change on European and global food demand and on raw material productions. The research focuses on the vulnerability and resilience of European food systems in a context of socio-economic, behavioural, technological, institutional and agro-ecological change and aims to enhance understanding of the new challenges and opportunities that the food sector will face in the future. Project’s Work package 2 aims to analyse how food and nutrition vulnerability is understood and discussed among the range of stakeholders and disciplines. This report in particular analyses how vulnerability is represented in Latvia’s media, science, policy and food industry texts. The report identifies and analyses food system vulnerabilities, their main drivers and how these are related to FNS in Latvia. The meanings and controversies of food system vulnerabilities and framings of debate are explored. The analysis reflects the debate in public, scientific, market and policy spheres across a range of food system vulnerability dimensions (economic, political, socio-cultural, ecological) and FNS outcomes (stability and control, availability, access, utilisation). The report addresses five specific research questions: 1. Which are the main characters of national FN system with particular regard to FN security? 2. What are the debates around FN security at the national level across the public, policy and scientific spheres? 3. What are the main hazards and the main vulnerabilities emerging from the media survey? 4. Which frames are recognizable in the debate? How do actors position themselves? 5. What evolution of the FNS discourse can be traced in the last years? Analysis is based on review of 59 sources including print newspaper, online newspaper, magazine, social media, policy document, scientific paper, food industry publications selected according to common TRANSMANGO WP2 methodology and guidelines. The list of analysed sources is given in Appendix 1. In total 114 media texts and 32 science, policy and food industry texts were analysed. Methods of data analysis included: quantitative and qualitative content analysis, tag cloud, discourse analysis, frame analysis, transversal analysis and synthesis. In synthesising findings a grounded approach was used. The report is has five main chapters. First chapter gives an overall introduction about aspects characterizing Latvia’s food and nutrition system. Second chapter illustrates the main drivers and hazards food and nutrition security is related to as reflected in debate in Latvia’s media. Third chapter describes main vulnerabilities identified in media, science and policy sources and social groups that are related to these vulnerabilities. A detailed description of vulnerabilities

In 2015 total Latvian agricultural imports amounted to U.S. $2.7 billion with U.S. $8.5 million originating from the United States. During 2015 Latvia’s economic growth rate increased by 2.7 percent. Further increase in the real GDP growth is expected in the forthcoming years. Scanburger is a Finnish owned fast food chain with 120 restaurants from which 110 are franchisee oper- ated. The chain has operated for 21 years and has had a proper visual identity renewal in the early 2000s followed by some progress in the 2010s. The main reason the renewal was made was due to several researches stating that Scanburger’s visual identity along with restaurant design pleasantness was poor in the eyes of consumers. The thesis explores how the chain has previously looked and visually communicated, what changes were made why these decisions were made. Information concerning fast food corporate visual identities are evaluated, researched and compared. This thesis concludes by putting all the bits of new visual identity in to a graphic guide- line for the use of chain management, franchisees and advertising agencies. A thorough explanation of what a graphic guideline is, how it is formed and what it needs withhold is followed. The conclusions also state that the chain needs thorough brand book which is tool for the chain management and franchisees for social media activities, verbal and written communication and better explains what are Scanburger’s values.

I avhandlingen undersöks det om företagen på oligopolmarknaden använder sig av tredje gradens prisdiskriminering. Tredje gradens prisdiskriminering betyder diskriminering på basis av marknadssegmentering utgående från externa faktorer. Under undersökningsperioden träder det en ny stor multinationell spelare, Burger King, in på marknaden och marknadsreaktioner lyckas observeras. Data är insamlat från tiden före och efter inträde och det undersöks om prissättningsstrategierna ändras på grund av intensivare konkurrens. Eftersom den finska marknaden är så liten, kan det lätt samlas data från hela marknaden både före och efter Burger Kings inträde. Med hjälp av t-test, F-test och OLS-regression ska prisen analyseras och slutsatser dras. Resultaten visar att McDonald’s använder sig av tredje gradens prisdiskriminering både före och efter Burger Kings inträde.

These cities are characterized by a minority of nationals (19.8% of residents of Daugavpils are Latvian, 4% of residents of Narva are Estonian) and a similar linguistic situation: there is a dominance of Russian in the press, television and radio, but the state language prevails in the urban language signs. The aim of the study is to analyse the linguistic and extralinguistic means used for the creation of ergonyms of educational and cultural spheres. The main criteria for the analysis are: language choice, grammatical structures, sources of precedent and semantic groups. The data for this study were collected in city websites. Some conclusions: 1) Mixed proper names (the direct name and symbolical name) prevail: in Daugavpils there are more mixed names in the Þ eld of education, while in Narva there are more mixed names in the culture sphere. Onymization of nomenclature names can be observed. 2) Ergonyms are mostly created in the ofÞ cial language. In Narva, there is expli- cit use of Russian (directly as the Þ rst/second or third language and indirectly – in transliteration). 3) In symbolical names, there are more lexemes representing or characterizing wildlife, while in Narva also the potential of mythology, literature and cinema is used.
