The first highlight of this itinerary will be a sightseeing tour of Bari. You will stroll through the labyrintical streets of Bari’s picturesque historical center and visit the Cathedral San Sabino, the Swabian Castle and the impressive Basilica di San Nicola (welcoming in a cosmopolitan way Christians belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church as well as those belonging to the Roman Catholic Church) . Tonight welcome dinner in a nice local restaurant DAY 2 BARI After breakfast you will go to Trani (with its beautiful Romanesque cathedral). It is situated on a raised open site near the sea. You will also visit the Swabian castle and the marina with the picturesque fishing boats, the historical center with its two synagogues. They were built in the 11th and 12th century by the flourishing Jewish community of Trani. Free time for lunch. We will be happy to recommend a typical restaurant. The afternoon will be spent discovering Castel del Monte, the UNESCO cultural heritage. At the end you will visit Andria, a city that is particularly closely connected to the Emperor and to the Teutonic Chevaliers. DAY 3 OSTUNI - ALBEROBELLO We are moving south to Ostuni also known as “the white city” because of its whitewashed housesNext we visit Alberobello known for its trulli. A trullo is a small dwelling built from the local limestone, with dry-stone walls and a characteristic conical roof. We will be arriving in Matera late afternoon where we will spend next 2 days Tonight we have arranged a nice dinner in a local restaurant. DAY 4 MATERA A local expert will accompany you for the discovery of Matera, the cave city one of the UNESCO heritage sites and described as the most o utstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean re gion, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem”. Rest of the day at leisure DAY 5 SORRENTO After breakfast we leave this incredible town and we are now heading north to reach Sorrento on the Amalfi coast. On the way stop in Pompei for lunch and guided visit of the old roman town of Pompei completely destroyed by one of the most devastating eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in the year 79 a.d . We will reach Sorrento at late afternoon. DAY 6 SORRENTO A fantastic excursion to one of the most famous island in the world: CAPRI where, weather permitting we will be visiting of of its most popular attraction the blu grotto. In the afternoon we take a panoramic drive to the reach awesome places such as Amalfi and Positano the 2 pearls of the Amalfi coast. Return to Sorrento to celebrate the last day of your stay with a nice farewell dinner in a tipical local restaurant. DAY 7 DEPARTURE DAY A private transfer to Naples airport. End of our services.     A YOUth Guide to Bari A YOUth Guide to Bari was cooperatively drafted by a group of students from the University of Bari, Faculty of Modern Languages, as a follow-up activity to the Workshop WRITING FOR TOURISM organized at the University of Bari in May 2012. The workshop saw active participation and involvement of over 40 students working for the first time as guidebook writers under the supervision of travel journalist and guidebook author Duncan Garwood. The guide was written with a specific target audience in mind, namely Erasmus and other foreign students in Bari. It is therefore simple, concise, and – above all – it tries to take into account the information needs of students as ‘incidental’ tourists. The authors wish to thank Prof. Maristella Gatto for the idea behind this project, for support through all steps, and for suggesting the title of this guide, and all the students who contributed to the success of the event. Needless to say, we feel a debt of gratitude to Duncan Garwood for sharing with us his expertise and for involving us in a rewarding writing experience. Un posto eminente in questo panorama puglie- se ha certamente la Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, capolavoro del romanico pugliese, che custodisce da novecento ventisette anni le spo- glie mortali di un Santo venuto da Oriente. La Basilica è un percorso di fede e di cultura che contribuisce a mantenere presente nella memoria di ognuno la storia collettiva, ma anche in grado di illuminare sui contenuti della fede stessa, di favorire il dialogo ecumenico, interreligioso e interculturale. Modello delle cattedrali pugliesi, la Basilica di San Nicola si caratterizza per il predominio della pietra bianca, sia all’esterno che all’interno. Al periodo delle origini, quando la Basilica era retta dall’abate Elia (1089-1105), dovrebbero risalire sia la cattedra dell’abate Elia che il portale dei Leoni, due capola- vori di scultura romanica difficilmente eguagliabili. Con l’abate Eustazio, successore dell’abate Elia nel 1105, si ha il terzo capolavoro scultoreo, il ciborio, quindi nei decenni successivi le gallerie esafore. La sfinge e i buoi del portale principale come pure le sculture del sarcofago dell’abate Elia fanno pensare che molto materiale del palazzo del catepano venisse reimpiegato nella nuova Basilica.

    The Miracles of St. Nicholas of Bari welcome the Pope and the Patriarchs of the Middle East 7 July 2018 at Basilica of San Nicola, Bari On the occasion of the arrival of Pope Francis and the Patriarchs in the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari, SAVE THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE will exhibit two DAW®️ (Digital Art Work) by Ambrogio Lorenzetti depicting the stories of the life of St. Nicholas (Miracle of the poor young women, St. Nicholas elected bishop of Myra, Miracle of the demoniac child and Miracle of the wheat). The two artworks are already on display to the public, and they will be placed next to the statue of St. Nicholas inside the Basilica, where the Ecumenical Meeting of Pope Francis with the Leaders and Representatives of the churches and ecclesial communities of the Middle East will take place. The artworks were originally located in the church of San Procolo in Florence. Dated around 1330, they represent the Miracles of St. Nicholas of Bari and they are kept in the Uffizi Galleries since 1919. The dimensions of the two original panels are 96 x 52.5 cm (about 45 x 51 each painting) and 92 x 49 (about 46 x 38 each painting). The works are tempera on wood panel and in Uffizi they are situated in the room of Sienese art from the 14th century. The depicted stories are characterized by exceptional and descriptive naturalness composed in rich manner and the typical gold color of the background has been reduced only to some areas of the painting giving more importance to the architecture, which occupies a large part of the background.
