Chapter 4: Academic regulations of Polinema International Program

Characteristics of Polinema education

State Polytechnic of Malang (Polinema) is a vocational higher education institution specialized in certain fields of knowledge. According to Article 15 of Law No. 20 Year 2003 on National Education System, Vocational Education is a higher education that prepares students to have a job with a certain maximum applied skills equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. The characteristic of polytechnic education is employing a course package designed to prepare graduates to be ready for work. Therefore, the curricullum must be in line to cater what the industry needs, covering both hard skills and soft skills.

Students’ hard skills are achieved through learning by doing classroom process which consists of 40% theoretical and 60% practical content courses, delivered through 5 +1 Competency Based Curriculum for the Diploma III Program and 7 +1 for the Diploma IV Program. In order to achieve the learning goals, small classes sized with a maximum number of 30 students per class are implemented.

To develop students’ soft skills, Polinema education is directed to build the characters of honesty, leadership, discipline, teamwork, and ingenuity in working (smart work). The students’ characters are always developed their problem solving skills. Moreover, discipline character is formed through basic discipline education for new students which are held at the orientation program.

In accordance to Government Regulation No. 60 of 1999, the graduate of Diploma III earns an Associate degree, called Ahli Madya abbreviated as A.Md., while for the graduate of Diploma IV Bachelor of Applied Science degree or Sarjana Sains Terapan, abbreviated as S.ST. The use of the graduate degree in the abbreviated form is placed after the full name of the graduate.

Course package requires the students to take all courses designed in a certain semester. The course package has the following characteristics: 1) Students take all courses designed for certain semester and must pass on every semester according to the rules. 2) Students are regarded to pass a course determined on the basis of academic achievement, classroom attendance, and compliance for following the order. 3) The number of hours per week for each course is determined by the classroom goal.

Final project (thesis)

Final Project or thesis is the final component of assessment to earn degree that must be taken by every student in their final semester. Students of Polinema International Program are required to write the thesis in English which consists of approximately 20,000 (twenty thousand words) or at least 75 pages long. The students work with the guidance of two supervisors of their fields; and one English language advisor. These two supervisors comprise one primary supervisor and one co-supervisor who assist the student for conducting and reporting the research from the beginning to the end of thesis writing. The English language advisor is the appointed English lecturer who assists the use of English in the thesis writing. Thesis must be done by every final semester student and have the same position with theoretical and practical subjects. Students will only earn a degree if they successfully completed and defended their thesis in front of board of examiners. The purpose of thesis writing is that students can apply their knowledge and skills accordingly in the areas of expertise.

Selecting a thesis topic The topic of thesis should be related to a specific field or a study program. It should be actual, original, well-defined, and is of the interest of the researcher and the supervisors. Students are advised to choose a broad subject area at first and then narrow down toward a thesis topic according to their supervisors’ suggestions.

Formatting the thesis The specific guidelines and format for thesis writing is set out by each study program. Generally, a thesis consists of five chapters, namely; introduction, literature review, methods, finding and discussion, and conclusion. Students should also write an abstract which is an overview of the whole thesis and is between 200-300 words along with three to five keywords of their research. a. Introduction

Introduction usually provides background to the topic; brief review of current knowledge; indicates gap in knowledge, states aim of your research and how it fits into the gap; may include hypotheses; and may include an outline of the following chapters.

Polinema International Program Guidebook 2020-2021 37

b. Literature review

Literature review may be merged with the Introduction or put into a separate section. It is an evaluation of previous research on the topic, where students show that there is a gap in the knowledge that the research will attempt to fill. c. Methods

This section outlines which method researchers chose and why (methodology); what, when, where, how and why they did what they did to get the results. d. Findings and discussions

Findings contain what researchers found out in relation to their research questions or hypotheses, presented in figures and in written text, while discussion section provides explanation and interpretation of the results. The discussion should also relate to specific results of the previous researches or theories. e. Conclusions

This is where researchers emphasize that the research aims/objectives have been achieved. Researchers can also emphasize the most significant results, note the limitations and make suggestions for further research.

Supervisors and Examiners Thesis supervisor and examiner must have an academic functional position of Instructor (Asisten Ahli) or above in their respective area of expertise. In addition to Polinema lecturers, examiners who are expert in the field may be drawn from other institutions, industries, or professional associations. Each study program will assign students with supervisors and examiners.

Supervisor Responsibilities Thesis writing is greatly affected by the nature of the supervision and the quality of communication between students and their supervisors. When students work closely and effectively with their thesis supervisors, they will improve the quality of their thesis and their educational experiences. The followings are some specific responsibilities of thesis supervisors: 1. Assisting the student with the selection and planning of a suitable and manageable thesis topic. 2. Assisting the student in conducting the research. 3. Assisting the student in writing the thesis.

Polinema International Program Guidebook 2020-2021 38

4. Responding in a timely and thorough manner to written work submitted by the student, with constructive suggestions for improvement. 5. Assisting the student to comply with the guidelines of thesis writing set out by each department. 6. Helping the student to prepare for thesis examination

Student Responsibilities Final year students should be committed to devote the time and energy needed to engage in research and write a thesis. Thesis supervisor has a right to expect substantial effort, initiative, respect and receptiveness to suggestions and criticisms. Students are expected to: 1. Make a commitment and show dedicated efforts to gain the background knowledge and skills needed to pursue your project successfully. 2. In conjunction with your supervisor, develop a plan and timetable for completion of all stages of your thesis project, adhere to a schedule and meet appropriate deadlines. 3. Meet with your supervisor when requested and report fully and regularly on progress and results. 4. Give serious consideration to the advice and criticisms received from your supervisors.

Scheduling Thesis Examination Schedule for thesis examination is set based on the university academic calendar or set according to each department schedule Thesis examination is normally scheduled in three rounds and students are scheduled for defense based on the date they submit their thesis draft to the secretariat. Technical matters regarding the thesis examination is regulated by each department or study program. Generally, the revised thesis shall be collected no more than 2 weeks after the examination date. In order to be assigned a Defense date, a student needs to submit the following documents to the Thesis Examination Secretariat, upon express approval by the thesis supervisors: 1. Transcript of Academic Record, as signed by the Head for Academic and Students Affairs Office; 2. A completed application form, signed by the thesis supervisors; 3. A copy of Student Card (KTM); 4.
