BY LOUIS HASBROUCK ...SAHLER . If we expect to be honored by posterity, we must honor the memory of our forefathers. UTICA, N. Y.: L. C. CHILDS & SON, PRINTERS AND BINDERS. THE SAHLER FAMILY. Abraham Sahler, the founder of the family, in the United States of America, married Elizabeth du Bois, whose parents were the children of two of the sons of Louis du Bois, the ancestor of his branch, in this country. As all the Sahlers are descended from this union, and as Louis du Bois settled here much earlier than Abraham Sahler, I shall write of the former and his family down to the alliance of his great granddaughter, with Abra h_am Sahler, before writing of the latter and his descendants. LOUIS DU BOIS was born October 28th, 1626, at Wicres, a village near the city of Lille, in the province of French Flanders. He was the son of Chretien du Bois, a Huguenot gP-ntleman, of landed estate. near Wicres, who belonged to the leading family of the name in that vicinity, the du Bois, Seigneurs de Beaufermez, and de Bourse, two old family estates. The du Bois are one of the most ancient, noble families of France, and the name is one of the oldest that has come down through the centuries unchanged. Owing to the persecutions of the Huguenots, Louis du Bois left his native land and sought refuge in the Palatinate, or Paltz, of the Rhine, at its capitol, Mannheim, where he was married October 10th, 1655, in the French Church, to Catharine Blanchan, daughter of Matthew Blanchan, and their two eldest sons, Abraham and Isaac, were born there. -

William Wilson, the pioneer ancestor of this family, emigrated from Stewardstown, County of Tyrone, Ireland, in 1732, when 19 years of age. The Town of Stewardstown is in the parish of Donagheny in the province of Ulster and eighty-two miles northwest of Dublin, long noted for its very superior linen cloth. William Wilson followed the trade of weaver after his arrival in this country, which he no doubt learned in Stewardstown. Two traditions exist as to the parentage of the pioneer William Wilson. Mr. William H. Wilson of 730 Goodrich Avenue, St. Paul, Minn., now 1929, 65 years of age, writes under date of February 21, 1929: “My grandfather (William Hart Wilson) told me when I was about 14 years of age that the William Wilson Bible which he had given to me on Aug. 3, 1864, had been owned by ancestors of his since first bought new in 1650, whose names from father to son had been William Wilson and that he was the sixth in direct descent to own the book.” The following copy of a letter sent the writer by Mrs. -

End. PREFACE. I have undertaken to narrate the coming of the perse- cuted Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces now comprehended within the United States. This movement and settlement took place principally at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. But before that period, important emigrations had already occurred ; emigrations to Acadia, or Nova Scotia, to Canada, to the French West Indies, and, by way of Holland, to the Dutch possession of New Netherland -- now New York. And still earlier, the effort had been made by Coligny -- unsuccessfully, indeed -- to plant a colony and provide a retreat for the French Calvinists, first in Brazil, and afterward in Florida. -

Louis Dubois of Seventeenth-Century New Netherland Walloon Founder of New Paltz, New York
Our Family History Louis DuBois of Seventeenth-Century New Netherland Walloon Founder of New Paltz, New York © Susan McNelley Flag of New Netherland Louis DuBois was a Walloon who immigrated to New Netherland in the final years of Dutch rule over the colony. The Dutch who settled in New Netherland believed that the colony offered more possibilities for prosperity than did Holland for themselves and their children. They were not fleeing persecution in their native country. However, they were not the only group of Europeans to settle in New Netherland in the seventeenth century. Protestants from other countries, persecuted at home, found refuge in the Dutch colony. Among them were the Walloons, a French-speaking but distinct ethnic group located in what is now southern Belgium and Northern France. They are often lumped together with the Protestant French Huguenots. Peter Minuit, the third Director of New Netherland, was a Walloon. The name DuBois is spelled a number of ways in the early records of New Netherland, including the following: Lowies de Boey, Lowi Duboi, Lowies Du Booys, and Lowies Du Bois. It helps that women in the Dutch colony retained their maiden name in the church records. The name of Louis’ wife Cateryn Blanchan is easily recognizable. A nice summary of the life of Louis DuBois is found in History of the Huguenot Emigration to America, written by Charles Baird in 1885. According to Baird, Louis was the son of Chrétien du Bois, a resident of the hamlet of Wicres, near Lille, Flanders. In the seventeenth century, the province of Flanders was under the rule of Roman Catholic Spain.
