Dear Mr. Trimble,

I have now been able to complete the research up to the limit which you set.

This has revealed several things: the main one being that the name which is not a common one taking Ireland as a whole does seem to have survived in many places to a somewhat remarkable extent. Therefore as you asked for any material which was found for the name to be sent even if not of immediate relevance to the people about whom you were enquiring, there is a good deal to send.

Firstly, to obtain some idea as to the frequency of the name a search was made in a special report on the surnames of Ireland which was issued in 1894. This report was based on the birth indexes of the year 1890. The report lists all those surnames which appeared in the birth indexes five or more times. The number for the whole of Ireland was given, and this number was then split up into the number for each of the four provinces, and if possible note was made as to any further localisation of the name.

The name Trimble did not appear: for the name Turnbull, the figures were five births in the birth indexes of 1890, three of them being in Leinster, and two in Ulster. There were none in Connaught or Munster: and no further comment was made.

To give some idea as to the commonness of names, the figures for the name Murphy were 1385, while even Wilson had 366 entries.

The name Trimble did not appear in a Guide to Irish Surnames . This was done several years ago by Dr. MacLysaght, who was formerly Chief Genealogical Office at the National Library in Dublin.

In 1890 also was published Varieties and Synonymes of Surnames and Christian Names in Ireland for the Guidance of Registration Officers and the Public in Searching the indexes of Births, Deaths and Marriages . This was by Robert E. Matheson, a barrister, who was Secretary of the General Registration Office. Trimble was not given: nor did it appear as a variant of another name.

This does seem to prove that Trimble is not a common name.

A reference was found to the name Trimble in O’Hart’s Irish Pedigrees , and a photostat copy is enclosed as it lists various families which are said to have gone to America in the early 18th Century. The two volumes of O’Hart’s Irish Pedigrees ran to several editions to-wards the end of last century. They are now regarded with some suspicion due to their method of compiling; but they are nevertheless useful. O’Hart’s other volume, Irish Landed Gentry When Cromwell Came to Ireland (1884) shows the name spelt Trimbel on page 18, where the name is given in a list (according to Wood-Martin) of Cromwellian Troupers who were disbanded in the county of Sligo. This volume besides some pedigrees much material such as lists of those who were granted lands under various settlements, and a copy of the book Of Survey and Distribution for the county of Mayo . These volumes give the names of the proprietors of land in 1641, the number of acres, both of profitable and unprofitable land, to-gether with the names of those to whom forfeited lands were conveyed. 2

The name Turnbull appears on page 94 of the volume where under the heading of the Kershaw family of South Carolina, records that a daughter of a Thomas Swallow married and had a daughter who on marriage become a Mrs. Turnbull. This appears to have been in the U. S. A.

A David Turneball (page 408) is listed as being one of the “Forty-Nine” Officers.

These were officers who served either Charles I or Charles II in the west of Ireland prior to 5th June 1649.

I should have said regarding the Index to Irish Surnames by Dr. MacLysaght that it has in the back of the volume a bibliography of Irish Family Histories: but the name did not appear amongst the families named.

There are in existence two volumes, published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission of wills which for various reasons of land ownership were registered at the Registry of Deeds. The two volumes cover the period 1708-1785: neither the name Turnbull nor Trimble appeared in either volume, the indexes of which cover all names appearing in any will abstract.

There is a volume also published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission, Quaker Records, Dublin, Abstracts of Wills . The name does not appear in that volume.

Father Clare in 1930 collected a list of wills which still existed in some form or another after the destruction of almost all the original wills in Dublin in 1922, and this list was published under the title of Irish Genealogical Guides, Volume I. It should be noted that in spite of the title it is the only volume.

One will of the name or variant is shown:- 1726. Trimble, Michael, merchant. Dublin. W. (at the Public Record Office, Dublin).

There is an index of will abstracts in Analecta Hibernica (Irish Manuscript Commision No. 17). These are abstracts to be found at the Genealogical Office, Dublin Castle. The name Trimble does not appear.

There are two volumes of gravestone inscriptions compiled by Dr. R. Clarke and recently published. These cover a number of graveyards in county . The name does not appear in either of these volumes. It is hoped that further volumes will be published of these inscriptions until at least all has been covered.

There were published from circa 1888 for about fifty years numbers of a magazine called Memorials of the Dead . These were largely devoted to tombstone inscriptions from all over Ireland. The following entries we found for the name Trimble or its variants:-

Volume III, page 251. There is a tablet in Down Cathedral with the name Major Turnbull on it. “This tablet is erected by the Officers, Warrant Officers, N. C. Officers, and Men / 2nd Royal Irish Rifles, To the memory of their comrades / who died while serving in Egypt during the years 1888-9 and 1890.” 3

Also the Body----Jane Faifield wife to John Trimble of Kilmegan March 1748 aged---also John Trimble dep-- ted 8 of sd Month.

It would seem that Alexander Trimble must have been the son of the last named and not the son of the first named John Trimble.

When the volume was published a note was made (1901-03) that the lower left hand corner of the stone was broken.

Here lieth the Body of Dorcas Shaw, wife to Robert Trimble of aged 36 years who departed this life the 25 Sep. 1711. Here lyeth the Body of R. T. Trimble who departed Life--of Agt. 1747 aged ----. Also his grandfather John Trindle (sic) who departed this life June 29th 1839 aged 66 years. And also his grandmother Elizabeth Trindle who departed this life March the 22nd 1842 aged 66 years.

In view of the fact that this name appears in the same churchyard, it must I feel be accepted as a variant of Trimble--perhaps a stonemasons error.

It should be noted that the last volume was not searched (volume 13) as it had no index. 4

In 1903 was published the Genealogist’s Guide . This was by George W. Marshall and listed all known printed sources concerning families. The name Thimble did not appear.

A name Trimnell which might be a variant was shown as appearing in a Harlein Society’s publication. ii. 176: xxvii, 137. From this source it would be likely to refer to English material. The name Turnbull was shown as appearing in the second volume, page 326 of Jeffrey’s History of Roxburghshire . (Scotland), and again in Burke’s Colonial Gentry , Volume II, page 665. This last might be connected with any part of the British Isles: but I have not had an opportunity to check further.

In 1953, Jo. R. Whitmore brought the preceding work up to date with his Genealogical Guide . Again Trimble did not appear: there were five references to Turnbull---but none apparently to do with Ireland.

About four years ago, Dr. Hayes compiled twelve large volumes entitled Ms. Sources for the History of Irish Civilization . This covered material from, it is said, thirty countries: it did unfortunately miss some important material here in Ireland: but it nevertheless is very important. The name Turnbull does not appear in that work, four volumes of which are devoted to ‘persons.’ The name Trimble did appear twice as follows:-

Trimble D. : Public Record Office: T. 475-476. Armagh Primatial Manor Court Rolls. 1625-7.

There is then what may be an error as it appears that a donor of material has been listed: Extracts from the Vestry book of Kilmore, county Armagh. 1732-1779. Presented by D. Trimble. Again, I have not had time to check further.

Trimble. (George Charles). G. 6. Ms. 151, pp. 490-2. Copy of Royal Licence to George Charles Trimble of Ashfield Park, in county Tyrone to take the name and bear the arms of Brackenridge only. Feb. 18, 1846.

In passing it can be noted that. W. C. Trimble wrote The History of Enniskillen , with some Manors of Fermanagh . This was published in three volumes circa 1919-21.

Today the Enniskillen paper The Impartial Reporter , established in 1825 is owned by William Trimble Ltd., with the Managing Director a W. Egbert Trimble.

I find that I should have inserted the further entries listed in the Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish Civilization . They are as follows:-

This is a different reference to the same material as one of those previously listed apparently:-

Trimble (George Charles). G. O. Ms. I07, pp. 342-3. Copy of grant of arms to George Charles Trimble of Ashfield Park, county Tyrone on his assuming under Royal License and in memory of his grandmother Margaret Trimble of Ballymacan, county Tyrone, the name and arms of Brackenridge. March 1846.

Trimble, (Richard). Belfast. P.R.O. T. 1465. Will of R. Trimble, 1896. 5

Evidence given by A. Gordon, Kilkeel, before the North East Boundary Commission circa 1925.

The births, deaths and marriages have been indexed from the newspaper the Belfast Newsletter from 1738-1800.

The issue of October 10th 1775. ‘On Georges Quay, Mr. Robt. Trimble, Surveyor of that place.’

The issue of 24th June 1791. ‘On Sunday sen’night, Mrs. Turnbull of Bullsbrook, near Dromore.

Trimble, George, Pen., (Mr. Mson) Oct. 18, 1830, aged 16, son of Joseph Generosus; born county Tyrone (assumed the name of Brackenridge in lieu of Trimble 1846).

Trimble, John. Pen. (Dr. Miller) June 13, 1843, aged 35, son of Mathew, Caupo. born Cookstown. B. A. Vern. 1847.

Trumbull, Robert Nathaniel. Pen. (Mr. Smith) Oct. 19, 1829, aged 17; son of Nathaniel, mercator (map maker). born Dublin. B. A. Vern, 1834.

There is an index to the Hearth Money Rolls of Counties Antrim, Londonderry and Tyrone and a subsidy roll of County Down. The first named were in existence because of a tax on the number of Hearths in each house: and second named was concerned with taxation of land.

The Hearth Money Roll of county Antrim showed the following:- (1669).

The Liberties of the East Division of Carrickfergus. George Trimble. Belfast Barony. Parish of Inver, Brondod (Browndod). John Trimble. Antrim Barony. Connor Town. Connor parish. Widow Trimble. Kilconway Barony. Knockan. Finvoy parish. W. Trimble.

Subsidy Roll for county Down. 1663. Lower Barony. (no parish given.) £1. John Trimble and Farbus Fowler, gents. 6

The Hearth Money Rolls of Counties Londonderry and Tyrone did not reveal the name.

The records of the General Synod of Ulster . Volume I. 1691-1720. Volume II. 1721- 1777.

There is an index to these two volumes: but the only mention of the name was to the Rev. Matt. Trumble being on trials in the Tyrone Presbytery: and being ordained by the Monaghan Presbytery.

The Fasti of the Irish Presbyterian Church gave more details of this man as follows:-

713. Trumble, Matthew; 2nd son of Joseph Trumble, merchant, Tobermore; born 1748; education Glasgow, 1768; lic. Tyrone Pres. 1775; ord. Monaghan June 1776; retired 1818. died 28 Feb. 1821. interred at Monaghan. Matt. Espy Trumble, M. A. (Glas.) who served in the 11th Regiment and who died at Belfast 28 Oct. 1824 was a son.

George Little, Alexr. King and Thos. Taggart were sons-in-law. (Reference:- funeral Sermon by Rev. J. Morell, Ballybay; Evangl. Witness 1871; Belfast Newsletter 6 Mar. 1821.)

In the General Index at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland in Belfast are some 74 references to the name Trimble, being divided into counties as follows:- County Down 17. County Antrim 3. County Armagh 5. County Tyrone 28. County Fermanagh 10. County Derry 2. County Cavan 1. County Longford 2. South Africa 1. Miscellaneous---no definite locality 5.

These references are as follows regarding date:- 5 17th century. 12 early 18th century.

The General Index also has 4 references to the name Trumble. 3 County Armagh. 1 County Longford

The General Index also has 1 reference to Trumbull---no county.

The General Index has 5 references to the name Turnbull. 4 County Down. 1 County Galway.

The only will reference is to that of a Robert Trimble (1906), Swanlinbar, county Cavan. Principal Registry Will and Grant.

It has not been possible in the time to check each reference: but it does not appear at first inspection of the information in the index that they are likely to be of help over the question of James Turnbull or Trimble and his wife Grace: nor over the question of James Turnbull of Tullandony, parish 7 of Dromore.

The Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland (1536-1810) lists the following wills:-

1748. Trimble, Alice, widow of John Trimble of Ballinroddy, county Longford, gent. 1811. Trimble, Elizabeth B. widow. 1754. Trimble, Francis, clk. 1726. Trimble, Michael, Dublin, merchant. 1809. Trimble, Montague, Dublin city, gent. 1763. Trimble, Thomas, late of Ballinroddy, now of Tinnemarch, county Longford, gent.

1753. Trumbull, Joseph, Dublin, woollen draper. 1750. Trumbull, Lidia, Dublin, widow.

The name Turnbull does not appear in this index.

The vast majority of the Prerogative wills up to the year 1800 were copied in chart form by Sir William Betham: so far I have traced at the Public Record Office, Belfast the following:-

Those four with the spelling Trimble whose dates are prior to 1800.

I am enclosing copies of the charts on a separate sheet: the remainder have not as yet been copied: it should be noted that Dublin also has a copy of these chart pedigrees: the two copied do not always tally: the one in Dublin sometimes has additions made later to the actual particulars gleaned from the will. Much more rarely this is true of the Belfast copy.

Various indexes were searched at the Public Record Office in Dublin.

It does certainly seem from this that considering the comparative rarity of the name or of the variants that a good number of wills, etc. have survived.

I searched in the indexes of the marriage licence bonds for marriages. In these indexes (the bonds themselves were lost in 1922 for all practical purposes---a few may have survived and there are some extracts) each name is done alphabetically not chronologically: and therefore in view of your request there are records of a good number of marriages. These indexes are done by diocese.

I should perhaps have said earlier that the parish of Dromore, county Down is in the diocese of Dromore. The following church registers are said to exist in that parish to-day:-

Church of Ireland. Baptisms 1784- Marriages from 1784. Burials from 1784 with a gap from 12

1812- 1816. Roman Catholic. Baptisms from 1822. Marriages and burials from 1821. Presbyterian. (1st Dromore). Baptisms from 1834 and marriages from 1845. Methodist. Baptisms from 1832 and marriages from 1864. Baptist. Marriages from 1893.

At the moment I have not been able to trace a record of what registers exist for another Presbyterian church, which I believe to lie in the parish of Dromore.

The Dublin diocesan Will and Grant books were published a good many years ago. The following entries were found in the first volume which covers the period from 1270-1800:- Tremble, David, Dublin, lieutenant, (died abroad) 1733. I. Tremble, Jane and John Kelly. 1791. M. L. Tremble, Jennett, Royal Hospital nurse, widow. 1726. O. W. Trimble, Anne and Thomas Canavan. 1788. M. L. Trimble, Catherine & Francis Shaw. 1692. M. L. Trimble, Elizabeth & Robert Jesson. 1744. M. L. Trimble, James, clerk Cambric Company, Dundalk. 1755 L. Trimble, John, Great Britain Street, carpenter. 1794. W. Trimble, Rachal, Dublin, widow. 1771. W. Trimble, William, Dublin, bachelor. 1747. I. Trimble, William & Anne Morgan. 1788. M. L. Turnbull, Andrew and Letitia Coakley (Cooksey in bond). 1799. M. L. Turnbull, Robert, Dublin, innkeeper. 1725. W..

I started to search at the Registry of Deeds in Henrietta Street in Dublin. Here all deeds which concerned the change in possession of land of more than one acre for more than one year should have been registered. There are two indexes, one of lands and one of grantors. There is unfortunately no index of grantees.

In the lands index under the heading of Tullindoney, county Down in the first volume covering the period 1708-1738, the name did not appear. The lands appeared to be part of the large Hillsborough estate.

In the second volume which covers the long period from 1739-1810 the following deeds were located:- Trumbell to Trumble. 228/395/151309. Turnbull and anr. To Maxwell. 290/400/192773.

Deed Reference:- 228/395/151309. It should be noted that in the book when this deed was inspected, it is listed as Turnbull to Turnbull. Registered 25th June 1764. Memorial of an indented deed of assignment. Dated 7th Nov. 1763.

Parties:- 1) Jas. Turnbull of Tullindoney, county Down. 2) Alexr. Turnbull of Tullendeny, son of the above named, linen draper. 13

The first named sold to the second named, half of his land of Tullendeny held by a lease for three lives under the Earl of Hillsborough, containing by estimation 40 Irish Acres. This to be from the 1st of November in the year of the death of James Turnbull. Also were granted a Cloth Mill, Beetling Engine and all utensils for three years. Also granted were the 18 acres of the lands of Lepacks for the remainder of the lease from Adam Stothard decd., gent. Both the deed and memorial were witnessed by Alexr. Colvill, Doctor of Physic and Joseph Dickson, gent., both of Dromore, county Down.

Deed Reference:- 290/400/192773. Turnbull and anr. To Maxwell. Dated 8th August 1772. A Memorial of indented deeds of lease and release. Parties:- 1) Alexr. and Jas. Turnbull, both of Tullydoney, county Down, linen drapers. 2) Rev. Henry Maxwell, Clk., of Dromore, county Down. For the sum of £200, the second named party was granted by the first named, the farm of 35 acres, 3 roods in Tullydoney for lives in deed of release---these not being stated in the transcript. Witnesses:- Jno. Campbell of Dromore, county Down, gent. and Daniel Daly, servant to the said Rev. Henry Maxwell. Witnesses to memorial:- Danl. Daly and James Birne of the City of Dublin, Gent.

I have not as yet had time to check upon the grantor’s index and the deeds from that in this early period: it should be noted that the two indexes do not always co-incide, and that deeds found in one do not always show up in the other.

This is as far as I have been able to go with the search within the limits set. As I have said before, I am very struck with the amount of material there is available for the name considering that is cannot be considered a common one today: it does give me the impression that it may have been relatively more common in Ireland two centuries ago.

Yours Sincerely,

\s\ Patrick Smyth-Wood 14
