Tennessee Notes TENNESSEE POSTGAME NOTES LSU at Tennessee Nov. 4, 2006 Neyland Stadium Knoxville, Tenn. “Tigers Rally Late To Defeat Vols in Thriller 28-24” Noting Tennessee z Tennessee fell to 7-2 (3-2 SEC); LSU improved to 7-2 (3-2 SEC). z The Vols entered the game ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press poll and in the USA Today rankings; LSU was ranked No. 13 in both polls. z Tennessee returns to action Nov. 11 when it travels to Arkansas to play the Razorbacks in Fayetteville. Kickoff time and television coverage has yet to be determined. LSU hosts Alabama. Tennessee-LSU Series z Tennessee leads the all-time series vs. LSU 20-6-3 (.741) dating to 1925. That record includes an 11-2-1 (.885) mark for the Vols in Knoxville. z Today’s contest marked the second meeting between UT head coach Phillip Fulmer and Tigers coach Les Miles. The coaches have split the con- tests, with each winning on the other’s home field. Phillip Fulmer’s Record z Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer’s record now stands at 135-40 (.771) in 15 seasons with the Vols. z Fulmer now owns a 3-3 record against LSU, an 87-28 mark against SEC teams, and a 34-11 record against the SEC Western Division. Cutcliffe’s Magic Number = 30 z Under offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, Tennessee has scored at least 30 points in six of its nine games this season. Phillip Fulmer z Under Cutcliffe (who was the offensive coordinator from 1993-98 before returning to the post this season), Tennessee has scored at least 30 Career vs. LSU points in 53 different games; UT owns an impressive 51-2 (.962) record when that happens. Crompton Sees First Significant Action of his Young Career Year Site W/L Score z Junior quarterback Erik Ainge made his 20th career start for the Vols, and completed 1 of 6 passes for 3 yards before giving way to Redshirt 1993 Knoxville W 42-20 freshman Jonathan Crompton. 2000 Baton Rouge L 38-31(OT) z Crompton relieved Ainge after three possessions, taking over for the first UT drive of the second quarter and leading the Vols to their first two 2001 Knoxville W 26-18 first-downs of the game. 2001 Atlanta L 31-20 z Crompton tied the score with the first touchdown pass of his career, a 37-yard strike to Robert Meachem in the second quarter. 2005 Baton Rouge W 30-27(OT) z The duo hooked up again with 7:29 to play in the fourth quarter, as Crompton hit Meachem on a deep post after a play-action fake to give the 2006 Knoxville L 24-28 Vols a 24-21 lead. The 54-yard touchdown was the sixth pass play of over 50 yards for the Vols this season - the first for Crompton. z Crompton finished the game completing 11 of 24 passes for 183 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Waynesville, N.C. native also 3-33 (.500) rushed six times for 22 yards. Professor Peydirt Strikes Again z Meachem snagged his 100th career reception with a 16-yard catch from Crompton midway through the second quarter. z The junior’s 37-yard TD reception was his seventh of the season - the first in three games since reaching the end zone against Georgia. z The Biletnikoff Award semifinalist finished with five catches for 121 yards. z Meachem’s 54-yard score - his eighth, the sixth-most by a UT receiver in school history - marked the third home game this season for Meachem with two touchdown catches. (California, Air Force) z The Tulsa, Okla., native went over the century mark for the fifth time this season with his 121 yards. z Meachem with 1,831 career receiving yards is in eighth place on Tennessee’s career receiving yards list. The Tulsa, Okla., native has 989 receiv- ing yards this season which is the fifth most in Tennessee history. Happy Return for Hefney (The Trilogy) z Since senior safety Jonathan Hefney could not get his hands on a punt to return, he intercepted LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with less than two minutes to play in the first half. His 30- yard return set up a two-minute drill led by Crompton that led to a 24-yard field goal by kicker James Wilhoit to give UT a 10-7 halftime lead. z The interception was the fourth of the season for Hefney and second in his career against LSU. z Hefney had a return of at least 30 yards in each of the last three games before the LSU game - a 40-yard punt return against Alabama, a 65-yard punt return against South Carolina and the inter- ception return today. Hefney did not return a punt against the Tigers. z Hefney led the Vol Defense with 15 tackles. Defense Denies z After driving inside the Vols 30-yard line on their opening drive, Xavier Mitchell shut down the Tigers with his fourth sack of the season. Mitchell nabbed LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell and forced a fumble - the first forced fumble of his career - which led to a missed field goal by Colt David from 52 yards. z Demetrice Morley stuffed the Tigers’ second drive by sacking back-up quarterback Matt Flynn on third down. The sack was the first of the sophomore’s career. z Antwan Stewart recorded his 100th career tackle in the first quarter. The senior safety finished the game with six tackles and added a key interception with 9:35 left in the game to stop the Bayou Bengals after they had driven down to the UT 23. z The Tigers struck first with a Russell-to-Buster Davis 23-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. The Vols are 3-2 this season when the opponent scores first. z Morley got the Vols off to a rousing start in the second half, intercepting Russell and returning it 31 yards for a touchdown. The pick was the third of his career and led to his first career touch- down. It also marked the longest interception return this season for UT. z Coupled with Marvin Mitchell’s interception return against South Carolina, the Vols have scored defensive touchdowns in consecutive games for the first time since 1996. Dwayne Goodrich returned an interception 45 yards for a score against Arkansas, and Raymond Austin took a pick 26 yards for a touchdown one week later against Kentucky. z Sophomore LB Jerod Mayo had 12 tackles which tied his career-high for the third time this season. z Ellix Wilson (5) and Demonte’ Bolden (4) both set new career-highs for tackles. Miscellaneous Notes z Coming into the LSU game, UT had outscored its opponents in the previous five games 85-20 in the fourth quarter. The Vols and Tigers both scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. UT has now outscored its opponents 92-27 in the fourth quarter in the last six games. z The Vols didn’t commit their first penalty until the 7:29 mark in the third quarter when Ja’Kouri Williams was flagged for kick-catch interference on a UT punt. z The UT defense has had three interceptions in each of the last three games (UGA, South Carolina and LSU), and its four forced turnovers matched a season-high set against Georgia. z Russell’s 34-yard run in the second quarter was the longest rush the Vols have allowed this season. z Tight end Brad Cottam caught a key third-down pass for a career-long 25 yards late in the third quarter. z Jayson Swain had three catches for 26 yards. Swain now has 108 career receptions which puts him in 10th place on Tennessee’s career receptions list. Meachem with 104 career receptions is nipping at his heels in 12th place. z Senior placekicker James Wilhoit kicked three extra points and connected on one field goal against LSU. Wilhoit now has 299 career points. z Punter Britton Colquitt punted five times for an average of 47.8 yards. The sophomore from Knoxville is averaging 42.989 yards per punt for his career which is the second best average ever for a Volunteer punter. z Cory Hayes, a 29-year-old from Knoxville, won $100,000 with a 35-yard field goal at halftime. z Tennessee’s game captains tonight were seniors David Ligon, Turk McBride, Marvin Mitchell, Arron Sears and Ryan West. z Today’s attendance was 106,333. www.UTsports.com.

University of Nevada, Reno Quarterback Value Forecasting and Fixing the NFL Draft’s Market Failure A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Economics by Trevor M. Wojcik Dr. Mark Nichols/Thesis Advisor December, 2010 THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the thesis prepared under our supervision by TREVOR MICHAEL WOJCIK entitled Quarterback Value Forecasting And Fixing The NFL Draft’s Market Failure be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Mark Nichols, Phd, Advisor Sankar Mukhopadhyay, Phd, Committee Member Rahul Bhargava, Phd, Graduate School Representative Marsha H. Read, Ph. D., Associate Dean, Graduate School December, 2010 i Abstract The National Football League (NFL) is a business that is worth nearly $7 billion annually in revenue. That makes it the largest money making sport in the United States. The revenue earned by each franchise is dependent upon the repeated success of the team. A commonly held belief is that for a franchise to be successful you must have an elite Quarterback. This thesis uses NFL data and for the 2000-2008 seasons to determine the role that Quarterback performance plays in team success. With the determination that Quarterbacks are important to NFL team success the question becomes how does a franchise effectively obtain the best player. The NFL player draft is the most commonly used method for teams to find their Quarterback of the future. The problem is that the success rate for drafting Quarterbacks is very low. In this thesis I have determined a more statistical approach to determining whether a drafted Quarterback will be successful.

INTRODUCTION Collegiate athletics has become big business in America, generating billions of dollars each year. Division I-A' football and men's basketball are among the most popular sports in America, and they are the revenue generators in collegiate athletics. Central Broadcasting Systems (CBS) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are currently under an eleven-year, $6 billion contract for the television broadcast rights for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.2 Fox is paying $330 million for the right to broadcast the Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowls from 2007-2010 and the right to broadcast the college football national championship games from 2007-2009. 3 With so much money spent on collegiate football and men's basketball, it appears that successful programs in these sports offer universities an opportunity to generate significant revenue.
