What could be left to experience, to enjoy? For starters, you will be inspired and informed by world-class major session speakers: Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC, adventurer Erik Weihenmayer, former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller and actress Jamie Lee Curtis. There’s our impressive slate of featured session speakers and seminar presenters, including business strategists and industry specialists covering a gamut of topics of importance to our membership. And then, there are the many opportunities to network with your peers, enjoy great sporting and social events, visit with our manufacturer and supplier partners, and rock out to one of America’s top pop rock bands—Train! My commitment to you is that this year MCAA’s convention will—yet again—exceed expectations! It will be an extraordinary event you won’t want to miss! Michael R. Cables MCAA President …with a very special moment. This year’s Opening Session will include a very special moment for our association. I will be presenting our Distinguished Service Award to MCAA member John Odom. John and I served together on CPMCA’s Board of Directors. I personally know of his many contributions to our association and industry. For these alone he is a worthy recipient of MCAA’s highest award. But this year, coming back to his family, his friends and his company from horrific, near-fatal injuries sustained in the Boston Marathon bombing, John has given new meaning to the expression “exceed expectations.” His incredible journey, with his wife Karen always at his side, has inspired us all—and it will be my privilege to bestow this award on him in Scottsdale. I look forward to seeing you all there. Chart-Topping Pop Rock Band San Francisco-based Train began its journey in the mid-1990s with “a pop rock sound that became as popular with adults as with younger audiences. Lead singer Pat Monahan formed the group with Jimmy Stafford on guitar and Scott Underwood on drums. The multi-platinum-selling band made its mark on music history with the Grammy Award-winning song “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” and chart-topping singles like “Meet Virginia” and “Calling All Angels,” earning its third Grammy in 2011 for the worldwide smash “Hey, Soul Sister” from the “Save Me, San Francisco” album. Train’s current release is “California 37,” which features the double-platinum hit “Drive By,” the platinum hit “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” and “Bruises,” a quickly rising single. Train has made numerous television appearances, performing on “The Today Show,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Monday Night Football,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Train also offers the award-winning Save Me, San Francisco Wine Company label and Save Me, San Francisco Chocolate (with Ghirardelli) with proceeds going to their charity of choice, San Francisco-based Family House. Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski Hosts, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” They’re becoming the most popular morning talk-show team on television. Each morning MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski welcome newsmakers and thought leaders of all political persuasions and disciplines. Joe, a former Congressman from Florida, proudly declares his political leanings (“small government, conservative Republican”) while butting heads with equally outspoken liberal Democrat Mika. She grew up in Washington, D.C., as the daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor and international affairs expert. Their backgrounds and temperaments are about as different as night and day, but their unique partnership and friendly sparring brings out the best in thoughtful, reasoned discourse on a wide range of issues. Bring your freshly brewed cup of Starbucks® to a lively conversation with Joe and Mika as they take on the latest headlines…and each other’s opinions about them. 3 Erik Weihenmayer World-Class Adventurer There is no mountain too high, no river too wide, and no desert too dry to prevent Erik Weihenmayer from taking it on. What’s even more remarkable about this intrepid adventurer is that he’s been testing and pushing the limits of what’s possible despite being blind since the age of 13. He is proof that one does not need to see to have extraordinary vision. As a world-class mountain climber, Weihenmayer has reached the summit of Mount Everest and climbed the Seven Summits—the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. In addition, he has scaled the 2,900-foot Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite, Peru’s 19,511-foot Alpamayo and the 3,000-foot frozen waterfall in Nepal. He was the first blind person to complete the Leadville 100 mountain bike race on a tandem bicycle. He was part of Team No Limits, which competed in and won second place in ABC’s “Expedition Impossible,” which involved crossing deserts on camels and Arabian horses, kayaking through raging whitewater and performing other nearly impossible challenges. Weihenmayer has written books about his adventures and the challenges he faced— Touch the Top of the World and The Adversity Advantage: Turning Everyday Struggles into Everyday Greatness. Learn more about and from this remarkable person and his powerful, inspiring message about harnessing the power of adversity to fuel greatness at the Annual Awards of Excellence Breakfast. Robert S. Mueller Former FBI Director He had only been on the job one week when two commercial airliners hit the World Trade Center’s twin towers on September 11, 2001. That historic, tragic event would transform his direction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from an army of crime fighting professionals into a highly effective counterintelligence force with the goal of preventing terrorist attacks against Americans. Robert S. Mueller, III, former director of the FBI, veteran U.S. Marine and former private litigator and public prosecutor with the U.S. attorney’s office, had an illustrious public service career before 9/11 as a U.S. attorney who prosecuted Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega, the Pan Am Flight 103 case (Lockerbie bombing) and Gambino family crime boss John Gotti. Post 9/11, he had to realign the FBI’s priorities and programs to intelligence gathering, analysis and interagency information sharing, all geared to preventing terrorist acts before they occurred. His and the Bureau’s record of success in preventing and confounding terrorist acts is impressive, with a couple of exceptions, including the Boston Marathon bombing. That horrible incident occurred mainly because discovering and stopping the terrorist acts of American-born or imbedded terrorists who are radicalized and trained through the Internet is very difficult. Mueller also notes the challenge of finding cyber-terrorists who have the capacity to wreak far more damage than a bomb. Mueller completed his extended term at the FBI on September 4, 2013. Join us for the Closing Session to hear this former top cop’s views on current and future challenges faced by the U.S. counter-terrorism effort here and abroad. 5 Jamie Lee Curtis Award-winning Actress and Author Jamie Lee Curtis’ (Baroness Haden-Guest) career and talents have spanned several film genres—horror, drama, comedy, and animated features—television films and a recent role as Dr. Samantha Ryan in the forensic television drama series “NCIS.” The daughter of actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, her first starring role (Laurie Strode) was in the unforgettable horror classic, Halloween. She starred in other horror films including The Fog, Prom Night and Terror Train, earning her the moniker “scream queen.” Her career shifted from blood and gore to comedy when she landed leading roles in several highly successful and memorable films including Trading Places, A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies and Freaky Friday. Since her first children’s book, When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old’s Memoir of Her Youth, she has established herself as a prolific and popular writer in this genre. Join MCAA First Lady Jennifer Cables and your friends at Ferguson for breakfast and a memorable discussion with Jamie Lee Curtis as she recounts the highlights of her amazing life and career and her insights about the importance of building self-esteem in women and girls. Featured Speakers Jordan Belfort The Wolf of Wall Street It used to be that few could match the moneymaking prowess of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” In the 1990s, Jordan Belfort built a massive stock brokerage operation—Stratton Oakmont —employing over 1,000 stockbrokers and raising over $1.5 billion in capital. At his peak, Belfort earned over $50 million a year. • His “pump and dump” operation and high-flying lifestyle came to a well-publicized end when the Securities and Exchange Commission started investigating complaints from Stratton Oakmont customers. • He was convicted of securities fraud and money laundering and subsequently lost his fortune, his family and his freedom. • Belfort is back in business as a consultant to more than 50 public companies and is sharing his secrets of success. • His proprietary Straight Line System allows him to take any company or individual, regardless of age, race, sex, educational background or social status, and empower them to create massive wealth, abundance and entrepreneurial success without sacrificing their integrity or ethics. Belfort’s extraordinary rise and spectacular fall from grace is the subject of two international bestselling memoirs, The Wolf of Wall Street and Catching the Wolf of Wall Street, as well as a major motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
