Brochure sponsored by Another best-in-class convention…

Each year when we think about the upcoming MCAA convention, we ask ourselves, can it get any better? What could be left to experience, to enjoy? For starters, you will be inspired and informed by world-class major session speakers: and of MSNBC, adventurer Erik Weihenmayer, former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller and actress Jamie Lee Curtis. There’s our impressive slate of featured session speakers and seminar presenters, including business strategists and industry specialists covering a gamut of topics of importance to our membership. And then, there are the many opportunities to network with your peers, enjoy great sporting and social events, visit with our manufacturer and supplier partners, and rock out to one of America’s top pop rock bands—Train! My commitment to you is that this year MCAA’s convention will—yet again—exceed expectations! It will be an extraordinary event you won’t want to miss!

Michael R. Cables MCAA President …with a very special moment.

This year’s Opening Session will include a very special moment for our association. I will be presenting our Distinguished Service Award to MCAA member John Odom. John and I served together on CPMCA’s Board of Directors. I personally know of his many contributions to our association and industry. For these alone he is a worthy recipient of MCAA’s highest award. But this year, coming back to his family, his friends and his company from horrific, near-fatal injuries sustained in the Boston Marathon bombing, John has given new meaning to the expression “exceed expectations.” His incredible journey, with his wife Karen always at his side, has inspired us all—and it will be my privilege to bestow this award on him in Scottsdale. I look forward to seeing you all there. Chart-Topping Pop Rock Band San Francisco-based Train began its journey in the mid-1990s with “a pop rock sound that became as popular with adults as with younger audiences. Lead singer formed the group with Jimmy Stafford on guitar and Scott Underwood on drums.

The multi-platinum-selling band made its mark on music history with the Grammy Award-winning song “ (Tell Me)” and chart-topping singles like “” and “,” earning its third Grammy in 2011 for the worldwide smash “Hey, Soul Sister” from the “Save Me, San Francisco” album. Train’s current release is “ 37,” which features the double-platinum hit “Drive By,” the platinum hit “” and “Bruises,” a quickly rising single.

Train has made numerous television appearances, performing on “The Today Show,” “The Tonight Show with ,” “Monday Night Football,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Train also offers the award-winning Save Me, San Francisco Wine Company label and Save Me, San Francisco Chocolate (with Ghirardelli) with proceeds going to their charity of choice, San Francisco-based Family House. Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski Hosts, MSNBC’s “” They’re becoming the most popular morning talk-show team on television. Each morning MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski welcome newsmakers and thought leaders of all political persuasions and disciplines.

Joe, a former Congressman from Florida, proudly declares his political leanings (“small government, conservative Republican”) while butting heads with equally outspoken liberal Democrat Mika. She grew up in Washington, D.C., as the daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor and international affairs expert.

Their backgrounds and temperaments are about as different as night and day, but their unique partnership and friendly sparring brings out the best in thoughtful, reasoned discourse on a wide range of issues.

Bring your freshly brewed cup of Starbucks® to a lively conversation with Joe and Mika as they take on the latest headlines…and each other’s opinions about them.

3 Erik Weihenmayer World-Class Adventurer There is no mountain too high, no river too wide, and no desert too dry to prevent Erik Weihenmayer from taking it on. What’s even more remarkable about this intrepid adventurer is that he’s been testing and pushing the limits of what’s possible despite being blind since the age of 13. He is proof that one does not need to see to have extraordinary vision.

As a world-class mountain climber, Weihenmayer has reached the summit of Mount Everest and climbed the Seven Summits—the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. In addition, he has scaled the 2,900-foot Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite, Peru’s 19,511-foot Alpamayo and the 3,000-foot frozen waterfall in Nepal.

He was the first blind person to complete the Leadville 100 mountain bike race on a tandem bicycle.

He was part of Team No Limits, which competed in and won second place in ABC’s “Expedition Impossible,” which involved crossing deserts on camels and Arabian horses, kayaking through raging whitewater and performing other nearly impossible challenges.

Weihenmayer has written books about his adventures and the challenges he faced— Touch the Top of the World and The Adversity Advantage: Turning Everyday Struggles into Everyday Greatness.

Learn more about and from this remarkable person and his powerful, inspiring message about harnessing the power of adversity to fuel greatness at the Annual Awards of Excellence Breakfast. Robert S. Mueller Former FBI Director He had only been on the job one week when two commercial airliners hit the World Trade Center’s twin towers on September 11, 2001. That historic, tragic event would transform his direction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from an army of crime fighting professionals into a highly effective counterintelligence force with the goal of preventing terrorist attacks against Americans.

Robert S. Mueller, III, former director of the FBI, veteran U.S. Marine and former private litigator and public prosecutor with the U.S. attorney’s office, had an illustrious public service career before 9/11 as a U.S. attorney who prosecuted Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega, the Pan Am Flight 103 case (Lockerbie bombing) and Gambino family crime boss John Gotti.

Post 9/11, he had to realign the FBI’s priorities and programs to intelligence gathering, analysis and interagency information sharing, all geared to preventing terrorist acts before they occurred. His and the Bureau’s record of success in preventing and confounding terrorist acts is impressive, with a couple of exceptions, including the Boston Marathon bombing. That horrible incident occurred mainly because discovering and stopping the terrorist acts of American-born or imbedded terrorists who are radicalized and trained through the Internet is very difficult. Mueller also notes the challenge of finding cyber-terrorists who have the capacity to wreak far more damage than a bomb. Mueller completed his extended term at the FBI on September 4, 2013.

Join us for the Closing Session to hear this former top cop’s views on current and future challenges faced by the U.S. counter-terrorism effort here and abroad.

Jordan Belfort The Wolf of Wall Street It used to be that few could match the moneymaking prowess of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” In the 1990s, Jordan Belfort built a massive stock brokerage operation—Stratton Oakmont —employing over 1,000 stockbrokers and raising over $1.5 billion in capital. At his peak, Belfort earned over $50 million a year.

• His “pump and dump” operation and high-flying lifestyle came to a well-publicized end when the Securities and Exchange Commission started investigating complaints from Stratton Oakmont customers. • He was convicted of securities fraud and money laundering and subsequently lost his fortune, his family and his freedom. • Belfort is back in business as a consultant to more than 50 public companies and is sharing his secrets of success. • His proprietary Straight Line System allows him to take any company or individual, regardless of age, race, sex, educational background or social status, and empower them to create massive wealth, abundance and entrepreneurial success without sacrificing their integrity or ethics.

Belfort’s extraordinary rise and spectacular fall from grace is the subject of two international bestselling memoirs, The Wolf of Wall Street and Catching the Wolf of Wall Street, as well as a major motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Join us in learning more about Belfort’s amazing life and even more intriguing insights into creating extraordinary business success. This session is sponsored by The Wade Group.

Eddie Osterland Master Sommelier Inviting business clients, prospects and colleagues to dinner is a wonderful way of being gracious, hospitable and sealing a new relationship or celebrating a long- established one. Most of us opt for the simple ideas that create an immediate, positive impact that will turn an ordinary experience into a lasting memory. However, selecting the menu for the event can be daunting, and choosing the wines that will enhance the various foods can be even more challenging.

Eddie Osterland (Eddie O), Master Sommelier, can help you erase any wine worries when entertaining. He demystifies wine by teaching you:

• Which wines and foods combine best; • What makes some wines very expensive; • Why you should never smell the cork; • Why all red wines should be served slightly chilled; • How to impress your guests with food you’ve ordered online; and • How to choose and combine foods and wines with confidence and panache, whether you’re entertaining at home or at a fine restaurant.

Osterland is a true master of wine. He was the first of 47 Master Sommeliers in the U.S. He received the prestigious Diplôme D’Aptitude à la Dégustation Des Vins from the Université de Bordeaux, France. MEP Guide to Spatial Coordination Through BIM

MCAA and the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) will soon release their landmark publication, Achieving Spatial Coordination Through BIM: A Guide for Specialty Contractors. This first-of-its-kind publication for the MEP industries contains a comprehensive collection of pragmatic tools and methods along with a treasure trove of best practices you can put to immediate use in your business decision-making regarding BIM implementation. You will learn repeatable, linear steps and practices that will help you avoid the mistakes of the early MEP pioneers as they labored to develop the expertise that serves them so profitably today. The presenters will dispel the mystique and the aura of complexity associated with spatial coordination achieved through the use of BIM.

Steve Shirley and David Quigley will show you how to utilize this resource inside your business. Among the topics they will cover:

• What are the most important things to consider as you begin the process of implementation? • What are the essential elements that make up a BIM-capable project team inside your firm? • What are a BIM Execution Plan and a BIM Implementation Plan and how are they different? • How do you manage the process of running a “best in class” spatial coordination effort? • Why is the process of collaboration so important to BIM and your company? • How do you best organize and manage contract documentation? • How do you make sure that the contract language is fair and does not place your firm at risk?

Steve Shirley has over 40 years of experience in the mechanical contracting industry. He has spoken on Building Information Modeling and its impact on the MEP industry since 2006 throughout the U.S. and in Canada and Australia. He is president and CEO of University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors, an EMCOR Company, and has served as chairman of MCAA’s BIM Committee since its inception in 2008.

David E. Quigley, MBA, is managing director at Emerson Research and Construction Services, a construction services firm helping specialty contractors develop their BIM Implementation Plans. While you’re there, be sure to stop by the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village for more local flavor. Travel south of the resort to Tucson where you can spend your day at an old western movie studio or visit Saguaro National Park, home of the nation’s largest cacti.

Last, but certainly not least, don’t miss the chance to see the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Take a car or train for a day or overnight trip and explore one of the most awe-inspiring sights in America! These are just some of the possibilities that Scottsdale offers for you to explore and enjoy. MCAA’s Annual Sports Events Sunday, March 9

Golf MCAA’s Annual Golf Tournament, sponsored by Victaulic and Carrier, will be held Sunday, March 9, at the Wildfire Golf Club. Both the Palmer and Faldo courses will be used for the tournament.

The Palmer Signature Course features expansive fairways, flashed bunkering and putting greens that carry plenty of undulation, like many Arnold Palmer designs. The expansive square footage of the greens allow the undulations to create subtle challenges for the short game without feeling contrived or “tricked up.”

The Faldo Championship Course offers a slight variation from the typical desert-theme courses. It features generous fairways, large Bentgrass greens and tee boxes. The surrounding mountains and century-old saguaro cacti, as well as 106 sand bunkers, are reminiscent of the Australian sand belt courses.

Running/Walking During MCAA’s Annual Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by ANVIL International, enjoy your choice of a 5K run or one-mile walk. The event will take place Sunday, March 9.

Tennis MCAA’s Annual Tennis Tournament, sponsored by NIBCO, will take place Sunday, March 9, at Desert Ridge’s Tennis Center, which offers exceptional facilities to suit even the most avid of players. Eight premier, hard, lighted courts allow games from early morning to late evening.
