Article for Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society Manchester’s Guardian Underground Telephone Exchange Richard Brook, Manchester School of Architecture Martin Dodge, Department of Geography, University of Manchester Introduction Deep under the heart of Manchester city centre lies a large network of reinforced concrete tunnels known as the Guardian Underground Telephone Exchange (GUTE). It is an ageing relic from the beginning of the Cold War era, built with some degree of secrecy in the mid 1950s, but it still operates silently and largely unmanned as an infrastructural space facilitating the communications of those above. Surprisingly little information regarding the GUTE is readily accessible and the subterranean nature of the structure itself acts to entomb the reality of its shape and scale. A lack of concrete information has allowed facts to be supplanted by myths, fostering numerous (mis)perceptions of the same intangible space. The GUTE was conceived during a time of escalating international tensions in the early 1950s as a ‘hardened’ bunker to protect vital national communication links in the event of an atomic bomb attack upon Manchester. However, this defining characteristic of subterranean defence was never achieved because, even before construction was complete in 1958, advances in nuclear weapons yield and the accuracy of intercontinental ballistic missiles meant the tunnel design would be ineffective for protection of the telecommunications machinery and personnel working within. NELSON formerly The Nature Conservancy; current 7401 Placer Run, Fort Wayne, IN 46815 USA In 1998-1999 The Nature Conservancy conducted a bioinventory of caves in Monroe and St. Clair coun- ties in southwestern Illinois. This karst area comprises a small section of the Ozark Plateau isolated from the Missouri Ozarks by the Mississippi River. In the 71 sites that were sampled, 41 species thought to be globally rare were found and were assigned state (S) and global (G) ranks of rarity for conservation use. The list includes 10 species considered to be new to science and 12 species previously unreported from Illinois. Twenty four taxa were classified as obligate subterranean species, including four endemic species: the pseudoscorpion Mundochthonius cavernicolus, the amphipod Gammarus acherondytes, the milliped Chaetaspis sp. (undescribed), and the dipluran Eumesocampa sp. (undescribed). Gammarus acherondytes, recently listed as an endangered species, was found in six previously unsampled caves. All sites were rank-ordered according to the number of global and state rare species. The greatest single site diversity was found in Fogelpole Cave with 18 global and 20 state rare species. -

Iowa Geological and Water Survey Bureau completed a detailed mapping project of bedrock geologic units, key subsurface horizons, and surficial karst features in the Iowa portion of the Upper Iowa River Watershed in 2011. In the report, they note that “One of the primary goals of the study was to gain more thorough understanding of relationships between bedrock geology and karst features within the watershed.” Black River Falls photo courtesy of Larry Reis. Sinkholes Esri, HERE, Garmin, FAO, USGS, NGA, EPA, NPS According to the GIS data from the Iowa DNR, the UIR Watershed has 6,649 known sinkholes in the Iowa portion of the watershed. Although this number is very precise, sinkhole development is actually an active process in the UIR Watershed so the actual number of sinkholes changes over time as some are filled in through natural or human processes and others are formed. One of the most numerous karst features found in the UIR Watershed, sinkholes are formed when specific types of underlying bedrock are gradually dissolved, creating voids in the subsurface. When soils and other materials above these voids can no longer bridge the gap created in the bedrock, a collapse occurs. Photo Courtesy of USGS Sinkholes vary in size and shape and can and do occur in any type of land use in the UIR Watershed, from row crop to forest, and even in roads. According to the Iowa Geologic Survey, sinkholes are often connected to underground bedrock fractures and conduits, from minor fissures to enlarged caverns, which allow for rapid movement of water from sinkholes vertically and laterally through the subsurface. -
Kaistella Soli Sp. Nov., Isolated from Oil-Contaminated Soil
A001 Kaistella soli sp. nov., Isolated from Oil-contaminated Soil Dhiraj Kumar Chaudhary1, Ram Hari Dahal2, Dong-Uk Kim3, and Yongseok Hong1* 1Department of Environmental Engineering, Korea University Sejong Campus, 2Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine, Kyungpook National University, 3Department of Biological Science, College of Science and Engineering, Sangji University A light yellow-colored, rod-shaped bacterial strain DKR-2T was isolated from oil-contaminated experimental soil. The strain was Gram-stain-negative, catalase and oxidase positive, and grew at temperature 10–35°C, at pH 6.0– 9.0, and at 0–1.5% (w/v) NaCl concentration. The phylogenetic analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis suggested that the strain DKR-2T was affiliated to the genus Kaistella, with the closest species being Kaistella haifensis H38T (97.6% sequence similarity). The chemotaxonomic profiles revealed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine as the principal polar lipids;iso-C15:0, antiso-C15:0, and summed feature 9 (iso-C17:1 9c and/or C16:0 10-methyl) as the main fatty acids; and menaquinone-6 as a major menaquinone. The DNA G + C content was 39.5%. In addition, the average nucleotide identity (ANIu) and in silico DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) relatedness values between strain DKR-2T and phylogenically closest members were below the threshold values for species delineation. The polyphasic taxonomic features illustrated in this study clearly implied that strain DKR-2T represents a novel species in the genus Kaistella, for which the name Kaistella soli sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain DKR-2T (= KACC 22070T = NBRC 114725T). Talukdar1* Abstract Background: Seeds of plants are a confirmation of their next generation and come associated with a unique microbia community. Vertical transmission of this microbiota signifies the importance of these organisms for a healthy seedling and thus a healthier next generation for both symbionts. Seed endophytic bacterial community composition is guided by plant genotype and many environmental factors. In north-east India, within a narrow geographical region, several indigenous rice genotypes are cultivated across broad agroecosystems having standing water in fields ranging from 0-2 m during their peak growth stage. Here we tried to trap the effect of rice genotypes and agroecosystems where they are cultivated on the rice seed microbiota. We used culturable and metagenomics approaches to explore the seed endophytic bacterial diversity of seven rice genotypes (8 replicate hills) grown across three agroecosystems. Results: From seven growth media, 16 different species of culturable EB were isolated. A predictive metabolic pathway analysis of the EB showed the presence of many plant growth promoting traits such as siroheme synthesis, nitrate reduction, phosphate acquisition, etc. Vitamin B12 biosynthesis restricted to bacteria and archaea; pathways were also detected in the EB of two landraces. Analysis of 522,134 filtered metagenomic sequencing reads obtained from seed samples (n=56) gave 4061 OTUs. -

The importance of the paintings, one of the finest examples of European rock art paintings, was recognized shortly after their discovery in 1940. In the 60’s of the past century the cave received a huge number of visitors and suffered a microbial crisis due to the impact of massive tourism and the previous adaptation works carried out to facilitate visits. In 1963, the cave was closed due to the damage produced by visitors’ breath, lighting and algal growth on the paintings. In 2001, an outbreak of the fungus Fusarium solani covered the walls and sediments. Later, black stains, produced by the growth of the fungus Ochroconis lascauxensis, appeared on the walls. In 2006, the extensive black stains constituted the third major microbial crisis. In an attempt to know the dispersion of microorganisms inside the cave, aerobiological and microclimate studies were carried out in two different seasons, when a climate system for preventing condensation of water vapor on the walls was active (September 2010) or inactive (February 2010). -

Chapter 40 -- Karstology Characterizing the mechanism of cavern accretion as "force" tends to suggest catastrophic attack, not a process of subtle persistence. Publicity for Ohio's Olentangy Indian Caverns illustrates the misconception.
