THE VOICE OF WOMEN: ARPILLERAS OF CHILE

September 25 through October 19 Monday through Friday 12:30 p.m. through 4:30 p.m.

/ In Chile, women artists who wish to speak out against ~ ( tyranny often turn to the only creative tools with which they are conversant -- needle and thread.

The results are called "arpilleras," appliqued and embroidered statements that protest the Pinochet dictatorship and support social reforms and humanitarian justice. Twenty-five of these works will go on display at the Founders Gallery exhibition.

The exhibition curator is Marjorie Agosin, a Chilean poet who went into exile when Pinochet overthrew the Allende government in 1972. Agosin, who currently teaches literature at Wellesley College, will deliver a lecture on "The Voices of Women" during an opening reception for the exhibition on Thursday, September 24, at 4:30 p.m.
