Checklist of the Inland Fishes of Louisiana Abstract Since the publication of Freshwater Fishes of Louisiana (Douglas, 1974) and a revised checklist (Douglas and Jordan, 2002), much has changed regarding knowledge of inland fishes in the state. An updated reference on Louisiana’s inland and coastal fishes is long overdue. Inland waters of Louisiana are home to at least 224 species (165 primarily freshwater, 28 primarily marine, and 31 euryhaline or diadromous) in 45 families. This checklist is based on a compilation of fish collections records in Louisiana from 19 data providers in the Fishnet2 network (www.fishnet2.net). -

REGIONAL INFLUENCE OF LANDSCAPE FEATURES AND PROCESSES ON FLUVIAL FISH ASSEMBLAGES By Darren Jay Thornbrugh A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Fisheries and Wildlife - Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT REGIONAL INFLUENCE OF LANDSCAPE FEATURES AND PROCESSES ON FLUVIAL FISH ASSEMBLAGES By Darren Jay Thornbrugh Habitat fragmentation, degradation and loss are dominant reasons for global declines in biodiversity of fishes in stream systems, and humans have drastically modified landscapes drained by streams due to activities including urbanization and agriculture. Such human land uses are known to change stream habitats through inputs of excess nutrients, sediments, or toxics and through changes in stream flow and thermal regimes, and human land uses have been shown in many studies to negatively affect stream habitats and the fishes they support. Despite this understanding, degradation of stream habitats and fishes continues globally, and freshwater fishes remain one of the most threatened groups of organisms on the planet. Less understood are the specific mechanisms by which land uses affect stream habitats and how these can vary by region, and how additional landscape-scale characteristics may alter effects of human land uses, resulting in regionally-specific responses in stream fishes to stressors. Such differences across regions may render one locale more sensitive to biodiversity loss or fish assemblage change from the same magnitude of anthropogenic disturbance in the landscape and confound efforts to develop and apply specific actions to conserve biodiversity of stream fishes. The goal of this study is to help address these limitations in understanding. -

THE TEXAS ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, SECOND EDITION, 2008 Preface to the Second Edition THE Since our original key to the fishes of Texas was published(Hubbs,et.al, 1991), several changes to the fish fauna of Texas have occurred. The number of recognized species and subspecies found inhabiting the state’s TEXAS ACADEMY freshwaters has increased by 21 species since our original key was published to the presently recognized 268 taxa. Many of the additions have OF come from newly collected forms, often as a result of introductions and from the division of existing species into more than one group resulting from recent advances in molecular genetics studies. One of the newly SCIENCE discovered species, Gambusia clarkhubbsi from San Felipe Creek in Del Rio, was named in honor of Dr. Clark Hubbs. One of the most significant trends we have noted is the continued decline of the state’s native fish fauna. We note herein that nearly 40% of the state’s fishes are of conservation concern and in need of some form of protection. This is AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST nearly twice as many as were considered in need of protection in our first edition. OF THE FRESHWATER FISHES We have reworked portions of the original key and corrected many of the errors; added a glossary at the end in response to many requests for OF TEXAS, WITH KEYS TO such; combined and expanded several of our original tables into one summary table of the status of all recognized Texas species; and updated IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIES the species accounts as needed.
