One of the things I most appreciate about Good Works is how people from different races, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds join together in a common purpose – repairing homes and restoring hope. This “joining together” is not exclusive to the volunteers who serve. It includes homeowners, their families, neighbors, local contractors, churches, businesses, donors and friends.

It is a vastly diverse collection of people who intentionally or There is no joy like the joy unintentionally are living out one of the most recognizable scripture passages in the Bible of serving others. – to love God and to love others (Mark 12:30,31). It is by doing this that we bring glory to God. While loving God is our priority, it seems more difficult to genuinely love our neighbors, especially if they think and act differently than us. “The God Honoring This year, Good Works is launching a special initiative entitled the “God Honoring Experience.” The intention is to turbocharge something we already do pretty well. But as Experience will be the acclaimed author Jim Collins would say, “Good is the enemy of great.” Our goal is to be catalyst that transforms great because we serve a great God. Good Works from good The God Honoring Experience will compel each of us to look at every interaction as an to great.” opportunity to glorify our Creator. And, it all simply starts by seeing everyone the way that BOB BEGGS, God sees them, as uniquely created, deeply loved and hungry for a relationship with Him. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR God’s perspective should change our perspective. That’s our 2020 vision! As you read through this Annual Report, you will discover the five tenets of the God Honoring Experience and I hope you begin to see how those principles are being put into action in our daily operations. I trust you are as excited as we are to experience how God will use this initiative to draw us closer to each other and to Him.

Honoring our Veterans

Teddy Cheshire never thought he would be asking for help. He considered himself a self- made man, fiercely independent and ready to take on the world. He came from a family of veterans. His father served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, his brother Wes was a B-52 mechanic in the Air Force, and his other brother, Frank, served with the Army 101st Airborne. Teddy chose the Navy because he heard, “the food is good and you can see the world.” Teddy Cheshire, He hoped to go into aviation, but was sent to school to become a guided missile technician U.S. Navy veteran and deployed on the USS Farragut, a Destroyer.

In 1974, Teddy was honorably discharged, went home to New York, and joined the “God does not forget, so Carpenters Union. That was until the bottom dropped out of the building boom in 1988. “The recession left too little work for too many tradesmen,” Teddy lamented. It was then we will not forget those that Teddy moved to Malvern and took a job with the Post Office as a clerk. He didn’t enjoy who society has forgotten the work, but he had a family to support and it payed the bills. Disaster struck in 2018 when – and we will certainly Teddy’s son Michael passed away suddenly at the age of 24. It devastated Teddy, and seemed to be the final blow in a life where so many things didn’t turn out the way he had hoped. not forget our veterans.” The mobile home park manager where Teddy lives noticed that his home had slipped into noticeable disrepair, and encouraged Teddy to contact us. Teddy recounts how, “My place was going down fast and so was I.” Teddy was afraid his mobile home needed to be demolished, but after Joe Lisowski, our Repair Supervisor, did his inspection, he told Teddy we could repair the unit while he was still living there. “That was the first good news I had in a long time,” Teddy said. Teddy now works part time as a delivery driver for a local auto parts store. “Things are starting to happen for me,” Teddy shared. Teddy helped out by using his carpentry skills, and did the majority of the drywall finishing. Teddy describes his experience with Good Works as a miracle: “I’m convinced that God and my son helped make this happen. Smack me! This must be a dream!”

3 Restoring Hope

My Ways are Not Your Ways

When the Good Works Board of Directors established “Replication beyond Chester County” as a goal in its 5-year strategic plan, they never imagined how it would play out. Over several years, a Replication Committee developed an affiliate-based model complete with everything necessary for a champion in another community to become an affiliate and grow an organization the “Good Works Way.” Taking Good Works nationwide was not envisioned Bob & Deb accept the ReFrame as an aggressive expansion strategy, but instead an exercise in waiting for God to make the Association Best Practices Award for first move. There were multiple expressions of interest and engagement with “champions” “Partnership with Homeowners” in communities both inside and outside of Pennsylvania, but most withdrew before incorporating as an Affiliate. It was initially disappointing, but what we didn’t realize at the “Good Works will follow time was that God had an altogether different launch strategy for Good Works Replication. God’s lead!” During that time, Good Works became a member of the ReFrame Association, a national BETTY TRAVER, network of home repair non-profit organizations. Their goal is to share wisdom, resources BOARD PRESIDENT and best practices for providing occupants of substandard housing with safer, more livable shelter. At the national conference in 2018, Bob Beggs, Good Works Executive Director made a presentation on using metrics and a balanced scorecard to measure and manage the Operations, Financial and Faith aspects of Good Works. One gentleman in the audience was Joe Huggins, Executive Director of Home Works of America, headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. Joe commented that the session was, “the Eureka moment he had been looking for to incorporate faith into his home repair organization and limit missed opportunities to share the Gospel.” He wanted to replicate the Good Works Ambassador Ministry model within his organization. We didn’t see that coming. Maybe, just maybe, God wanted the ministry program of Good Works to be the first step in replication. That interaction led Good Works to launch a monthly videoconference Faith Affinity Group within ReFrame in January 2019 and Deb Lego, Good Works Outreach Director, became a Faith Program Consultant for ReFrame members. At the 2019 ReFrame Conference, Affinity Group members hosted morning devotions for conference attendees and Bob and Deb facilitated two breakout sessions entitled: Is Home Repair Eclipsing your Ministry and God Stories. Each session was well-attended and to cap off the conference, Good Works received a “Best Practices Award for Partnership with Homeowners” acknowledging our Ambassador Ministry and use of Hope Certificates. 2019 Restoring Hope Replication beyond Chester County has begun! Not in the way originally envisioned, but Metrics instead as God intended it to occur. Joe Huggins recruited an Ambassador Director and six Bibles: 60 Ambassadors in South Carolina and held their first Ambassador workday on March 7, 2020. He shared that what he most appreciates about his interaction with Good Works, “is the & Community Agency Referrals: 115 bold witness Bob and Deb are having within the ReFrame Association.” In Joe’s words: “What you are doing is changing organizations and lives for eternity all across the country. The Tracts & Right Now full impact of that will not be realized this side of heaven. This connection is inspiring me Media: 1,226 to be equally bold in my faith.” Additionally, Emmanuel’s Hammer, also of South Carolina, Biblical Encouragement: 1,407 and Good Neighbors Home Repair of Kennett Square, PA are both establishing their own Prayed: 3,487 Ambassador ministries. Plans are underway Shared the Gospel: 200 for each of these organizations, along with others God directs, to join our Good Works Decisions for Christ: 23 Ambassadors for our first nationwide, virtual Ambassador workshop in September 2020! “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways” (Isaiah 55:8-9). Good Works will follow God’s lead! Joe Huggins (L) with Home Works of America first Ambassador team. 4 Volunteers

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Good Works and we deeply appreciate every hour that each volunteer has invested in our mission since 1988. Ten volunteer leaders celebrated service anniversaries in 2019. Their names were engraved on brass plates and added to the respective Recognition Plaque displayed in the warehouse where they serve.

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 JOHN 3:18 5 Partners

Partnership occurs when two or more people or organizations come together in order to accomplish something that neither of them could do alone. Devoted, supportive partners are among life’s greatest blessings and Good Works has been the benefactor of strong church and business partnerships for over three decades. Another blessing is the introduction of new partners into the Good Works family and among those who united with us in 2019 are three featured here; Garden Spot Village, Calvary Chapel – Chester Springs and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. Mitchell and Sally Maday with homeowner Sally Peirson Garden Spot Village Garden Spot Village is a licensed, non-profit, faith-based continuing care retirement community located in New Holland, Pennsylvania. Cliff Anderson, a resident at Garden Spot 2019 Partner Churches and long-time Good Works volunteer became aware that several other Garden Spot residents were contemplating starting a home repair ministry there in New Holland. Cliff persuaded his Bethlehem United Methodist friends that it would make more sense for them to volunteer with an established organization Church, THORNTON like Good Works than to go it alone. Convinced of the new plan, Don Aldrich, another Calvary Fellowship Church, Garden Spot resident and Chet Yoder, Garden Spot Chaplain began recruiting their friends DOWNINGTOWN and neighbors and before you know it, they had a full work team ready to serve. On a Calvary Chapel of Chester Springs, sunny Saturday in May 2019, men and women from Garden Spot Village experienced their EXTON first Good Works workday. They repaired a roof, rebuilt a back porch, replaced an outdoor Central Presbyterian Church, light and even painted the mailbox post. The group returned to work on another home in DOWNINGTOWN September and again in November. Don shared the sentiments of the group; “Serving in Christ Community Church, this way restores people’s homes to be safer, warmer and drier. Also, it brings hope to people WEST CHESTER who may have lost hope and in a practical, physical way shows God’s love for them.” Plans Downingtown United Methodist are already set for the volunteers to return regularly in 2020 and Good Works is pleased to Church, DOWNINGTOWN recognize Garden Spot Village as its first retirement community partner! Exton , EXTON “It’s not what you’re retiring from, it’s what you’re retiring to that matters.” Fairview Presbyterian Church, GLENMOORE UNKNOWN AUTHOR First Presbyterian Church, Calvary Chapel – Chester Springs WEST CHESTER When several things come together at a single point it is called a confluence. The confluence Forks of the Brandywine, of two rivers for example, is where they merge to become a single mightier one. For Calvary GLENMOORE Chapel – Chester Springs, it was the confluence of several church members who had Great Valley Presbyterian Church, volunteered with Good Works in various capacities over many years that led to it becoming MALVERN a Partner Church. Mitchell Maday had served as a Work Crew Leader and Ambassador along Grove United Methodist Church, with his wife Sally. Doug Thompson was serving on the Good Works Board of Directors. John WEST CHESTER Clemens had coordinated several church workdays in the past and Mark & Nora McEvoy had Hopewell United Methodist become involved with several Good Works special projects and committees. Chuck Breder Church, DOWNINGTOWN was volunteering as a technical leader in Phoenixville and the list goes on. Mitch described Hopewell Church, ELVERSON Calvary as a church with all the ingredients; skilled people, a heart for service and a pent up St. Elizabeth , UWCHLAN demand for the opportunities to make a difference in the local community. “People right St. Peter’s Parish, outside the doors of our church need help, yet are often overlooked” Mitch shared, “You WEST BRANDYWINE don’t have to travel to the other side of the world to share God’s love in tangible ways.” St. Simon and Jude, Being led by the Holy Spirit, Mitch and his fellow congregants submitted a proposal to WEST CHESTER church leadership, which was approved, and presented Good Works at their annual Men’s St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Retreat and Bible Study. “Everyone pitched in and the response was overwhelming with DOWNINGTOWN 26 church members signing up to help,” Mitch added. Sally and her friend Mary Lou Griffin agreed to take on lunch duties, clinching the deal and enabling Calvary Chapel to begin work on their first home in April 2019. Like disparate streams coming together to form a mighty river, the Calvary Chapel team has converged as one of Good Works’ newest Partner Churches. “Seeing the impact our church has had on the homeowner and the hearts of the people as they serve and has been an incredible blessing.” 6 MITCHELL MADAY Partners

Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Lindsey Grace, had only worked at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in West Chester, PA for a little over a year when the opportunity to organize an employee volunteer day crossed her desk. “Wells Fargo encourages its employees to volunteer with a local each quarter,” Lindsey shared, “and a Community Care grant can be provided to the charity when a group of employees join in.” There are a lot of worthy non-profit organizations in West Chester, but Good Works’ mission resonated with Wells Fargo’s community giving values. The company Doug Cahill and friends has a legacy of supporting local non-profits that provide sustainable home ownership, preparing to dig out affordable housing and disaster relief & rebuilding. “We are in the business of helping people a basement window well. get in their homes and stay in them.” Lindsey said, “It’s the joy of the job.”

At first, Lindsey had concern about volunteering for a home repair organization. “Good 2019 Corporate Partners Works does REAL construction and I wasn’t sure that we had the skills to contribute.” But Arcus Design Group, EXTON her concerns never materialized on the workday.
