    ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF RELIGIOUS ORDERS William A. Hinnebusch, O.P. The article is from a Journal: Review for Religious. It helps us to understand the CONTEXT of St Ignatius while founding the Society of Jesus. An attentive study of the origins and history of religious orders reveals that there are two primary currents in religious life--contemplative and apostolic. Vatican II gave clear expression to this fact when it called on the members of every community to "combine contemplation with apostolic love." It went on to say: "By the former they adhere to God in mind and heart; by the latter they strive to associate themselves with the work of redemption and to spread the Kingdom of God" (PC, 5). The orders founded before the 16th century, with the possible exception of the military orders, recognized clearly the contemplative element in their lives. Many of them, however, gave minimum recognition to the apostolic element, if we use the word "apostolic" in its present-day meaning, but not if we understand it as they did. In their thinking, the religious life was the Apostolic life. It reproduced and perpetuated the way of living learned by the Apostles from Christ and taught by them to the primitive Church of Jerusalem. Since it was lived by the "Twelve," the Apostolic life included preaching and the other works of the ministry. The passage describing the choice of the seven deacons in the Acts of the Apostles clearly delineates the double element in the Apostolic life and underlines the contemplative spirit of the Apostles.

    SAINT THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS (1873-1897) hérèse Martin was born in Alençon, France, on January 2, 1873, Tto Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin, who were canonized together in 2015. After the death of her mother on August 28, 1877, Thérèse moved with her family to the city of Lisieux. Some extraordinary graces accompanied Thérèse’s human and spiritual maturation and allowed her to grow in her awareness of the infinite Mercy of God that is offered to every person. On the day of Pentecost in 1883, she had the unique grace of being healed from a serious illness; through the intercession of Our Lady of Victories. In 1884, she received her First Communion and at that time experienced the grace of intimate union with Christ. Thérèse had a great desire to follow her sisters, Pauline and Marie, into the Carmel of Lisieux to live a contemplative life. While on a pilgrimage to Italy, during an audience that Pope Leo XIII granted to the faithful of the Diocese of Lisieux, she boldly implored the Holy Father to obtain permission to enter Carmel at the age of fifteen. Having obtained his permission, Thérèse entered the monastery in 1888 and professed her vows on September 8, 1890. Her journey of holiness was strengthened by trusting God during mo- ments of great trial, to which she gave witness in her writings, letters, and prayers. Her teaching is also evident in poems and small theatrical per- formances written for recreation with the sisters. As a collaborator in the formation of novices, she undertook transmitting her spiritual experiences condensed into The Little Way of Spiritual Childhood.

Explains the Church’s condemnation of some worker-priests who advocated a close a association between Marxism and Catholicism, but is distraught at the Church’s inconsistency in not condemning those priests who are closely linked to capitalism. Sees the present day scandal of the Church as an imbalance between spiritual and material works. (DDLW #174). The Worker priests of France, for the last ten years, have left the side of the “faithful” and have gone after the lost sheep of France. They have been doing what Jesus Christ Himself told them to do in their great love of God and of their brothers. This work which has caught the attention of the world began with the Resistance movement in France when both Communist and Catholic lived side by side in prison and concentration camp where they began to know one another and love one another. It began with the great vision of a great churchman, Cardinal Suhard, (whose collected writings can be obtained from the Fides Press in Chicago). With a Strong Cry And now, after ten years trial, these worker priests have been under the scrutiny and criticism of the world so that every day there is some mention of their work and present struggles in the secular press as well as the Catholic. The criticism comes from the rich and powerful, whose greed and wealth make them sensitive to the criticism of these new articulate “poor,” as well as from their lawful superiors, the present Cardinals of France and the Holy See in Rome.

IF a zoologist chose to discuss a particular species of monkey not in the context of his general exposition of the Simian group, but in the context of the human group, one would suspect that there was some doubt about its status, or some confusion in his mind, or, perhaps, both. If the Second Vatican Council chose to discuss the so called 'Sec­ ular Institutes', which Pius XII had clearly stated were lay in charac­ ter, not in the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, but in the Decree on the renewal of the Religious Life, similar suspicions naturally arise. The history of how paragraph eleven came to be included in the Decree is itself a sign of the hesitations of the Conciliar Fathers about what to say or not to say on the subject. Eventually, they ended up by having next to nothing to add to what P ius XII had said in Provida Mater. Theologians were thus left to continue their discussions about the meaning and implications of Pius XII's declaration that members of the Secular Institutes both had the 'substance of the religious life' (essentially because they took the three vows to follow the evangelical counsels) and were still laymen (essentially because they were en­ gaged in secular jobs by the very nature of the Institutes). Four types of reaction to the Pope's declaration can be clearly dis­ tinguished among the variety of views expressed by theologians since it was made in 1947.
