Mandate Elective Placement Programme for Overseas Medical Students Faculty of Medicine University of

Congratulations on selecting Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna as your elective destination. The Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna is one of the best medical schools in South Asia and the forerunner of medical education in northern Sri Lanka. It was established in 1978 and currently consists of 12 academic departments.

Clinical training placements of the undergraduate medical programme are primarily conducted at the Teaching Hospital Jaffna, the largest tertiary care institution in the Northern Province. The mental health clerkship is carried out at the Psychiatry Department, Base Hospital Tellipalai and Teaching Hospital Jaffna; and the attachments in Community and Family Medicine, in the University Field Project Area.

Teaching Hospital Jaffna:  Functions as the apex tertiary care centre in northern Sri Lanka for adult, maternal and child health care services;  Serves as the teaching hospital for medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna;  Provides clinical training to undergraduate medical students and post graduate trainees through professorial (university-affiliated) and other units;  Offers a wide range of clinical experience to medical students, in both out-patient and in- patient care;  Offers a multifaceted academic programme, through its professorial units, including regular academic meetings, clinical discussions and case-based discussions, in addition to clinical and academic research in a multitude of disciplines.

Base Hospital :  Functions as the main teaching unit for psychiatry in the north. It provides inpatient facilities for mentally ill people who cannot be managed in the community;  Has an inpatient unit, which has 30 beds (15 male, 15 female), but is usually occupied by about 40 patients at any given time. The unit has facilities for multi-disciplinary involvement;  Caters mostly to adult psychiatric patients; it is also the main forensic psychiatric unit in the northern region;  Has a residential rehabilitation centre, placed within the community milieu, for people who have lost their basic functional abilities due to mental illness;

University Field Project Area:  Functions as a field training/experimental area for medical undergraduates, post-graduate students and paramedical students; a substantial part of the undergraduate community and family medicine curriculum is carried out in the area;  Also serves as a channel for dissemination of health information and education to the general public;  Is partly peri-urban and partly rural and represents the diversity and mix of socio-economic and health problems in the country; it is home to about 40,000 residents;  Is located in close proximity to the Faculty of Medicine, and is easily accessible.

Overview of attachments  Elective attachments are offered by the clinical departments (Clinical Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Psychiatry) and the Department of Community and Family Medicine;  Activities are conducted in different settings: in the hospital, field or within the Faculty of Medicine;  Elective candidates will be attached to the relevant departments (Clinical Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Psychiatry, Community and Family Medicine), and will follow departmental guidelines during the placement;  Elective placements are mostly flexible and may be modified to suit the individual requirements of candidates;  Each department will accept a maximum of 2 candidates within a specific time-frame;  A candidate may opt to complete more than one attachment consecutively within a specified elective period.

 Fees The course fee is USD $ 55 per week.

Reception of documents will be acknowledged within two weeks; The application will be processed and forwarded to the Faculty Board for review and the outcome notified via email within 4 to 6 weeks; The letter of offer will be emailed once the decision is made.

 Visa requirements The faculty is currently unable to assist with your visa application. You should apply and obtain a student visa to come to Sri Lanka for your elective placement.  Arrival To facilitate timely commencement of your elective attachment, you should inform the Elective Coordinator your date of arrival as soon as it is confirmed; Fees must be paid in full on arrival to the Finance Branch of the University of Jaffna or a branch of the People’s Bank. Please note that you should bring with you the offer letter and proof of payment on the first day of the attachment; You are expected to report to the Elective Coordinator at the Department of Medicine, Teaching Hospital Jaffna on the first day of your attachment.

 Accommodation Unfortunately, neither the Faculty of Medicine nor the Teaching Hospital Jaffna is in a position to provide food, accommodation or transport; We are happy to say that there are plenty of guest houses and hotels around the Teaching Hospital Jaffna, which offer food and accommodation at a reasonable cost.
