ver the last couple of years the city’s Community & Economic Development department has worked with the Planning Commission to revamp the city’s Oland use and development code and bring forward recommended changes to the City Council for review. The City Council approved those changes at the end of 2019; the new code goes into effect Jan. 15, 2020. Winter 2020 • 7 Community Economic Development Long-term planning in the Lakeview neighborhood

he area around the Lakewood Sounder Station is ripe for redevelopment and this year the city will begin crafting a plan for how to make that happen. TSimilar to the downtown planning process in 2018 where a long- range plan was created for the redevelopment of Lakewood’s downtown core, in 2020 the city will embark on the same public outreach and engagement journey to learn from residents and business owners about what they want located around the commuter rail station. Located on Pacific Highway South near Interstate 5, Lakewood Station is in the city’s Lakeview neighborhood. In 2012 Sound Transit extended its Sounder Train service to the station, connecting more people to the commuter light rail. Even before this expansion, the city recognized the need for a long-range plan for this neighborhood to prioritize economic development and add housing diversification along with traffic demand management tools. The city made note of this desire in its first Comprehensive Plan, which was initially adopted in 2000. This plan, which governs how the city will grow over time, addresses the Lakewood Station “district” and outlines goals, objectives and policies to assist with its continued redevelopment. The assumption is at least some of the proposed long-term growth would include affordable and mixed-income housing, which is prioritized in the city’s 2018-2020 Strategic Plan. Housing proximity to public transit is also a priority. It is expected that much of 2020 will be spent gathering and analyzing public feedback through engagement and outreach events, with the Lakewood Station Subarea Plan’s completion and adoption anticipated by spring 2021.
