"Telecom Industry in India" The telecommunication industry in India was one of the most swiftly growing sectors in the world with stupendous growth over the last decade. It was regarded as the third largest in the world and the second largest among the emerging economies of Asia. Besides the public sector, the private segment had made significant contribution that had turned the industry into one of the key contributors to the Indian success story. It had an impressive growth trajectory, adding nearly 9 million subscribers per month, bringing the mobile subscriber base to over 903 million by January, 2012. BCG, in January, 2011, indicated that the Indian telecom market would surpass the US $100 billion mark by 2015. This report contradicted the prevalent common belief that growth in the telecom sector had reached a saturation point. In 1994, when mobile phones were introduced in India, the country was divided into 23 circles and licences were issued as per these circles. The circles were classified into four categories — Metros, A, B and C - on the basis of revenue potential; Metro and A circles were expected to have the highest potential. The telecom market in India was highly competitive compared to other countries, and there were over 11 operators in each circle, which was unheard of anywhere else in the world. Different players included Airtel, Reliance, Vodafone (earlier Hutch), Idea, Tata, state-owned BSNL and many more. -

The package costs Rp66,000/US$5 a month. CatchPlay has also acquired exclusive digital rights for award winning Indo- nesian movie, Solo, Solitude, which will stream on the platform in May. In addition to the monthly subscription option, a multi-layered pricing strategy offers consumers in Indonesia free mem- bership and one free CatchPlay movie a month, with a pay-per-view option for lo- cal and library titles at Rp19,500/US$1.50 each or new releases for Rp29,500/ US$2.20 each. CatchPlay CEO, Daphne Yang, de- scribed Indonesia as a market of “huge potential in terms of individuals who use the internet for video streaming”. NEW ALIGNMENTS IN SOUTH INDIAN POLITICS The 2001 Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu A. K. J. Wyatt There has been a strong regional pattern to the politics of modern Tamil Nadu, intimately related to the caste stratification of Tamil society. In contrast to other parts of India, upper-caste brahmins constitute a very small proportion (approximately 3%) of the population of Tamil Nadu. Roughly two-thirds of the 62 million population belong to the middle group of “backward” castes. Though this umbrella term is widely used, it is some- what misleading. Members of these castes do not enjoy high ritual status in the caste system, hence the term “backward,” but they occupy a wide variety of socioeconomic positions in Tamil society. For example, during the colo- nial period, some members of the backward castes were wealthy owners of land and businesses. These leading members of the backward castes resented brahmin dominance of politics and the professions under British colonial rule.1 In particular, in the early 20th century, many considered the Indian National Congress to be an elitist and socially exclusive organization. The project include Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (RLIS) taken up by the Andhra Pradesh government, and the hydel power generation projects taken up by the Telangana government. Historical Background about the dispute over Krishna River A dispute over the sharing of Krishna waters has been ongoing for many decades, beginning with the erstwhile Hyderabad and Mysore states, and later continuing between the successors Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The first Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT) was set up in 1969, under the Inter- State River Water Dispute Act, 1956. The report divided the 2060 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of Krishna water at 75% dependability into three parts amongst Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Afterward, as new grievances arose between the three states, the second KWDT was instituted in 2004. It delivered its report in 2010, which made allocations of the Krishna water at 65% dependability into three parts. -

Spoofs and the Politics of the Film Image’s Ontology in Tamil Cinema * Constantine V. Nakassis All Film Spoofs, No Spoof Films Commercial Tamil cinema has long been a travesty of itself, its textuality woven from so many citational allusions, homages, and self-parodies; and yet, until recently there was no such recognized genre of the spoof film, only “comedy tracks” trailing in the shadows of the grandiose hero and his more serious narrative, parodying his potent image here and there, most often through scenes of comically inverted or failed heroism (Nakassis 2010:209–221). In 2010, this was seen to have changed, with the release of a surfeit of spoof films—Venkat Prabhu’s Goa, Simbudevan’s Irumbu Kottai Mirattu Singam, and, most importantly for this paper, C. S. Amudhan’s aptly titled Thamizh Padam, or ‘Tamil Movie.’1 And then of course, there was that unwitting spoof hero, the self-proclaimed “Power Star,” Dr. S. Srinivasan, who entered the scene in 2011 with his unbel- ievably absurd, yet ambiguously self-serious, film (Lathika) and public persona (figure 1).2 Industry insiders and film enthusiasts often explain this seeming par- adox that Tamil cinema is all spoof with no spoofs by pointing to the self- seriousness of the industry—that is, that it can’t take a joke; or alter- natively by pointing to its cultural and historical particularity—that is, that “spoofs” are a foreign genre. But what is so notable is that the ind- ustry has long made jokes at its own expense. Think, for example, of Nagesh’s memorable comedy track from Sridhar’s classic 1964 romantic comedy Kadhalikka Neeramillai (‘No Time for Love’), which turns on Nagesh’s nascent film production: a parody of the film producer, Nagesh * Constantine V.
