Ugly Duckling and Me, the Lion King, and Brother Bear) A STUDY OF WORD FREQUENCY IN SELECTED CHILDREN MOVIES (UGLY DUCKLING AND ME, THE LION KING, AND BROTHER BEAR) Risma Auliana Muhammadiyah University of Jember [email protected] ABSTRACT For decades, movie has been widely observed in many terms but, in educational field, movies do not seem always applicable. In Indonesian context, for example, learning English using movie for the beginners can be more distressing and wasting time. On the other hand, especially for vocabulary development, the use of movies can be further employed. Language used in the movies can be analyzed using corpus-based approach to provide more useful information such as for English learners, Teachers and materials developers. The research questions motivate the present study includes (1) What are the most frequent words in each movie? and (2) How are the semantic representations of the most frequent used in the movie? This research was qualitative in nature and applied corpus-based approach. By conducting a corpus-based analysis of a variety of texts from one genre of movie language, this study explores how the most ferquent words reflected different linguistic representations. Using SCP program, the corpus forming the basis of analysis consists of various texts from three Children movies – Ugly Duckling and Me, The Lion King and Brother Bear. The result of this research proved that pronouns are the most frequent vocabulary used in the movies. The domination of pronouns overrides nouns in the position of subject and object. It might give important information of the position of pronouns in real context and situation and thus its portion in language teaching should be taken into account. Concerning the semantic representation of the words, it is informed that the use of the most frequent words can make the situation in the classroom more personal and more likely for the speaker to respond. Therefore, it may indicate that in spoken language, by using ‘pronoun’ there will be an intimate interaction between the speaker and the listener. Contact: [email protected] 1 Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios Abstract There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. Instead, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored “digital-surrealism” that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

Therefore I will discover that animated Disney features that portray slightly anthropomorphic animals in their natural habitat can be read as ecological films. Most Disney films carry environmental messages as anti- hunting or anti-domestication when the films are analysed through ecological theories combined with a new media theory and concepts considering spectator engagement. Bambi and Finding Nemo are films that contain a sense of immediacy and therefore their respectively anti-hunting and anti-domestication messages are apparent. This immediacy misses in The Jungle Book, however through a sense of place this can still be seen as an ecological film, with a minor message of preservation. Tarzan bears an anti-hunting message through the anthropological machine and the immediacy of the film. This same anti-hunting message is perceived in The Fox and the Hound, although less apparent due to the lack of immediacy. The last film is Brother Bear although there is a self-reflexive element in this film, the anti-hunting message is not perceived due to the lack of Nature as an ideal.

Brunick, Ph.D. Cornell University 2014 Discussions of children’s media have previously focused on curriculum, content, or subjective formal features like pacing and style. The current work examines a series of low- level, objectively-quantifiable, and psychologically-relevant formal features in a sample of children’s films and a matched sample of adult-geared Hollywood films from the same period. This dissertation will examine average shot duration (ASD), shot structure (specifically, adherence of shot patterns to 1/ f ), visual activity (a combined metric of on- screen motion and movement), luminance, and two parameters of color (saturation and hue). These metrics are objectively quantified computationally and analyzed across films. Patterns in children’s formal film features are predicted reliably by two variables: the intended age of the film’s audience and the release year. More recent children’s films have shorter ASDs, less visual activity, and greater luminance than older children’s films. Luminance also reliably predicts character motivation (protagonist or antagonist) within films. Films for older children are reliably darker than films for younger children. When comparing the Hollywood sample to the children’s sample, children’s films are reliably more saturated and have higher ASDs than their Hollywood counterparts; however, these effects are largely driven by expected differences between animated and live action films rather than the intended audience of the film.

In 2003, we experienced solid earnings growth despite the difficult economic and geopolitical environment that prevailed during most of the year. Most significantly, our fourth quarter was very strong, with more than double the earnings of Q4 in 2002, underscoring our confidence in generating growth in the new year.
