Signature______________________________________________________________ ii Abstract Lady Gaga’s rise to stardom in 2008 surprised many individuals who foresaw the quick demise of the singer-songwriter's career due to her controversial lyrics, performances, and fashion attire. Known for her shock value aesthetic, Gaga’s approach to fame included explicit female sexuality, a chameleon persona, and an effervescent embracement of one’s Otherness. This paper explores how Lady Gaga has manufactured her success. By adopting the traits of a performance artist and appropriating key strategies from art history, she reflects the work and personae of several modern and postmodern artists, including Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dali. Through spectacle, fame, and performance, she embodies the postmodern Other and lobbies for a new generation of post-gendered individuals, free from discrimination and disenfranchisement.

  • The Art of 'Black Is King'
The Art of ‘Black Is King’: Beyoncé’s New Visual Album Involves Today’s Best Artists and Curators Alex Greenberger August 3, 2020 Still from BLACK IS KING (2020). TRAVIS MATTHEWS/©2020 PARKWOOD ENTERTINAMENT Each time Beyoncé releases new music, it might as well be considered an art-world event too. She’s been known to include works by vaunted artists in her videos, and with her husband Jay-Z, she’s built up an important collection of Black art. She’s also been spotted at important exhibitions for the likes of Kerry James Marshall and William N. Copley, and has been shot by some of today’s most important photographers. Her latest endeavor, an 85-minute visual album titled Black Is King that debuted on Disney+ on Friday, is no different in that respect. Intended as a reinterpretation of the story of The Lion King (Beyoncé did voice work as the character of Nala for the 2019 live-action remake), Black Is King is filled with artworks of note, and includes contributions from art-world figures behind the scenes. Below, a look at the many art-world connections borne out in Black Is King. Behind the Camera Black Is King was overseen by Beyoncé in collaboration with a team of seven co-directors, two of whom appeared in the film section of last year’s Whitney Biennial: Blitz Bazawule and Jenn Nkiru. In that exhibition, Bazawule, who also works as a musician under the moniker Blitz the Ambassador, showed his 2018 feature The Burial of Kojo, which focuses on a Ghanaian girl’s spiritual journey to save her father who is trapped in a mine.

  • We Made Lemonade: Black Women, Syncretic Religion, and Voodoo Aesthetics in American Culture
WE MADE LEMONADE: BLACK WOMEN, SYNCRETIC RELIGION, AND VOODOO AESTHETICS IN AMERICAN CULTURE A Senior Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in American Studies By Ndeye Khar Reese Ndiaye Washington, D.C. April 19, 2018 WE MADE LEMONADE: BLACK WOMEN, SYNCRETIC RELIGION, AND VOODOO AESTHETICS IN AMERICAN CULTURE Ndeye Khar Reese Ndiaye Thesis Adviser: Adam Rothman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Historically, syncretic religion has never been positively represented with such a broad platform as it has through Beyoncé’s Lemonade. Through the historical origins of the practice with its inception in the Americas and the Caribbean during the colonial period through the commercialization of Voodoo culture in modern-day New Orleans, the true meaning and purpose for syncretic religious practice was lost up until April 2016. On April 23, 2016 Beyoncé released her visual album Lemonade. It addressed varying themes including her husband’s infidelity, her increasingly louder political voice, and her endless support for Black Women. Much to the surprise of many, Beyoncé also made references to syncretic religious practice throughout the piece. This invited the question, “Why did Beyoncé choose to highlight syncretic religious practice throughout Lemonade?” This thesis examines the role that syncretic religion played in Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album, Lemonade. Using an interdisciplinary method of analysis including anthropology, film, history, and cultural studies, I use varying texts and cultural figures to make my point that Beyoncé’s usage of syncretic religion in her visual-album transforms the negative connotation of syncretic religion into one that is more positive.
