  • How John Liviakis Selects Mares and Plans Matings
PHOTO CREDIT How John Liviakis selects mares and plans matings 22 / BloodHorse.com / FEBRUARY 13, 2016 / TheBloodHorse / BloodHorse BEHIND THE BREEDINGS BY LENNY SHULMAN hen the first blanket of snow covers the Bluegrass, we know that breeding season is about to commence. For the past Wfew years at this time Blood-Horse has asked prominent breeders to share their philosophies of choosing stallions for their mares, and this time around we travel out to California to talk with John Liviakis who, when not running his Liviakis Financial Com- munications, one of the leading financial public relations firms in the world, keeps busy reading pedigree analyses and checking in on his broodmares in Kentucky and Florida. Liviakis, a former Standardbred trainer, has bred grade I winner Gomo, multiple graded stakes winners Handsome Mike and Reneesgotzip, grad- ed stakes winners Tommy Macho, Mighty Caroline, and Renee’s Titan, and stakes winner Renee’s Queen. Although all of the above won added-money events within the last five years, Liviakis no longer owns any of their dams. Because Liviakis invests heavily in the young companies he helps to devel- op, his disposable income ebbs and flows, affecting whether he holds or sells bloodstock. “When you’re a breeder and have all these foals every year, your numbers go up geometrically,” Liviakis said from his Mill Valley, Calif., headquarters. “Unless you’re extremely wealthy, you can’t handle the numbers. So I’ve had to sell, and you can only sell the ones people want. But besides the financial rea- sons, I’m also a big believer in the fact that mares regress in their productivity as they get older and have more foals.

  • Kentucky Derby Comments by Brock Sheridan Photos by Coady and Chelsea Durand
Kentucky Derby Comments By Brock Sheridan Photos by Coady and Chelsea Durand #1 Known Agenda, 6-1 Drawing the inside post is his biggest problem. He won the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in his last start, and an allowance race, also at Gulfstream, before that on Feb. 26 and is trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Always Dreaming, 2017 and Super Saver, 2010). The Florida Derby has produced more Ken- tucky Derby winners than any other prep race (24) and six Kentucky Derby winners since 2000. Third in the Rem- sen (G2) won by Brooklyn Strong at Aqueduct on Dec. 5 and fifth in the Sam Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 6, Known Agenda looks to be a “getting good at the right time” horse with the addition of blinkers for his last two races. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a plus, even among the world’s best and post one. Known Agenda #2 Like the King, 50-1 Won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in his last race and his first career victory was on turf, so rac- ing on dirt for him is a question mark. In two starts on dirt, he was second in his career debut in July and third against allowance horses at Keeneland in October. Although this is the first Derby starter for trainer Wesley Ward, he has a reputation for his horses performing well on a world stage. Like the King #3 Brooklyn Strong, 50-1 Was the last to qualify for the Kentucky Derby as he made the field over the weekend when others were with- drawn.

DAVID COYLE DAVID KEENELAND.COM K SUMMER 2018 27 spotlight on MIKE RYAN o call Mike Ryan just a bloodstock agent is an understatement. The 35-plus-year veteran of the Thoroughbred breeding industry tdoes far more than cherry-pick pros- pects from a sales catalog. He is also a successful breeder and pinhooker — scooping up under-the-radar yearlings to flip at a profit — a successful own- er, and a trusted adviser on everything from choosing a trainer to mating a mare. To say he excels at buying horses — well, another underestimation. Ryan has more than a flair for finding a year- ling with the right stuff. What he has is more like a prophetic vision: He can eyeball a gangly colt or filly and come up Inspecting horses on the farms often means navigating fences and other with a pretty clear picture of what the obstacles. youngster will look like charging down the stretch as a 3-year-old. And never has Ryan’s sagacity been more on dis- play than in the past year or so as hors- es with his name in their provenance have racked up win after win in classic races and Breeders’ Cup contests. Just take a look at 2017.
