Sir William McKell was born in 1891 at Pambula, N.S.W., the son of Robert McKell, a butcher. In 1898 the family moved to Redfern in where McKell was educated at Bourke Street Public School, Surry Hills. He left school at the age of 13 and later became an apprentice and subsequently a boilermaker. He was an active union member and in 1917 became M.L.A. for the Labor seat of Redfern. McKell was an assistant minister for Justice, 192O 1922, Minister for Justice and assistant Treasurer, 1925-1927, Minister for Local Government, 1930-1931, Minister for Justice, 1931-1932, Leader of the Opposition, 1939-1941 and Premier, 1941-1947. From 1947-1953 he was Governor-General of Australia and in 1956-1957 was a member of the Malayan Constitutional Commission. McKell had studied law at night and in 1925 he was admitted to the bar. In 1945 he became a King's Counsellor and in 1948 a Privy Counsellor. He received a knighthood in 1951. In 1920 McKell married Mary, daughter of James Pye, and they have three children
