It was the first of its kind in the west of Ireland and was a great success! At that time people went to the pub, had a few drinks and then went on to a dance which were dry venues, ie no bar license. In 1974 he opened the squash court which was, I think, the first in Munster outside of Cork City. It was an immediate success. This was of course a commercial decision because during the winter months it would create a lot of activity around the place. Cars in the car park during week nights looked good and brought in others! Of course there was a certain group of members who would spend 30 minutes playing squash and then spend 2 hours in the bar rehydrating themselves. Can one imagine today’s cyclists or joggers doing the same! Tournament nights were always looked forward to, as the club had many competitive, talented players and the balcony would be full to capacity. Michael loved being around to watch and enjoy the tension and excitement. The squash club brought a great buzz to the place and he very much enjoyed the company of many members. There was always great banter and debate on all subjects from squash to politics! Unfortunately squash was going out of vogue during the 1980s and by then there were up to 13 other clubs in Clare, many of which had better facilities. Sadly the club finally closed in 1991 after struggling for a few years. It was sad for him to see it closed as he had many fond memories of the club and its members going back over time! Sadly he became ill in early 2008 and succumbed to his illness on 17 February 2009. As an entrepreneur he had many successes and a few failures. The One Mile Inn and its squash club, full of great people, was one of his proudest and most favourite achievements. *********************************** ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Peter Beirne and Brian Doyle for all their help and advice at the The Local Studies Centre. Tom Howard for his tribute to his father Michael. Phil Molony for her excellent help and Jim O’Dowd for ensuring this book was published. The Clare Roots Society for all their advice. D2 Print for their help in designing the cover and printing the book. Seamus Hayes for his introduction, and of course for all the articles he wrote on the club over its seventeen year existence. It was like reading a weekly newsletter on the club. All these articles (810 pages) are available on the Clare Library and the Ennis Tennis websites. There are also newspaper articles (over 27 years) on 15 other squash clubs. These include the Auburn Lodge, Ballina, Boys National, C.B.S. (157 pages), Clarecastle, Cooraclare, Ennis Golf Club, Ennistymon, Kildysart, Kilkee, Lissycasey, Newmarket On Fergus, Shannon Diamond and St Flannan's. There is also a feature on the Clare Squash Racquet's Association which was formed in 1982. Finally there is a tribute to Michael Howard on the Clare Racquet History Blog. *********************************** 2 1973/74 The squash court was built in 1974 The first newspaper advertisement appeared in March 1974, as follows: The first Tournament was the Harp Handicap Competition which was won by Pat Kirby (of Handball fame).
