He is best known for being half of the Southern hip-hop duo Clipse, along with his brother and fellow rapper Pusha T. No Malice released his solo debut album Hear Ye Him on August 18, 2013 and the second studio album Let the Dead Bury the Dead on August 18, 2017. 1972-2009: Early Life and Clipse No Malice was born To gene Elliott Thornton Jr., August 18, 1972, in the Bronx borough of New York. He and his family later moved south to Virginia Beach. He and his brother, Pusha T, formed the rap group Clipse in 1992, and were later introduced to virginia colleague Pharrell Williams, half of the high-profile production team of The Neptunes. Impressed by his lyrical talents, Williams formed a working relationship with the duo. He eventually helped them sign elektra Records in 1997. Under Elektra, and with Neptunes processing its production, Clipse recorded their debut album Exclusive Audio Footage. The band's debut single The Funeral helped generate fans' interest in the album, but failed to have a significant commercial impact. With The Funeral considered a failure, exclusive audio footage itself has been postponed indefinitely. Shortly thereafter, Clipse was released from his recording contract. In early 2001, Williams signed with Arista Records through his newly created Star Trak Entertainment imprint. Clips released his commercial debut Lord Willin', on August 20, 2002. The album debuted at number one on billboard's Top R'B/Hip-hop Album and No. 4 on the Billboard 200, fueled by the power of the leading singles Grindin and When the Last Time, which peaked at 30 and No. 19, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100. The third single from the album Ma, I Don't Love Her (featuring Faith Evans) became a modest hit, reaching 86th place in the Hot 100. On October 1, 2002, just a month after his release, Lord Willin was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association (RIAA). In late 2003, Clipse began recording material for his second album Hell Hath No Fury. However, further work on the album was suspended in 2004, when Arista Records was absorbed by his sister label Jive Records as part of a larger merger between Sony Music Entertainment and BMG. In connection with contractual Clipse was forced to stay on Jive, while Star Trak and the rest of his roster moved into a new home on Interscope Records. While Clipse resumed work on the album and eventually finished recording it, the duo became increasingly disillusioned with Jive as the label overlooked him in favor of more pop-oriented action on his list, prompting numerous delays in the release of Hell Hath No Fury. As the delays continued, the team requested a formal release from the contract. When Jive refused the request, the duo sued the label. On May 9, 2006, Clipse finally reached an agreement with Jive Records to release the album through their own label Re-Up Records with Jive. Hell Hath No Fury was released on November 28, 2006. He spawned two singles: Mr. Me Too with Pharrell Williams and Wamp Wamp (What It Do) with Slim Thug. Although the album received a lot of critical acclaim, its sales were modest, at 78,000 in its first week. Hip-hop magazine XXL gave the album a XXL rating, noting it as a five-star album. At that time, only five albums had previously received this honor. In an interview with Eye Weekly on May 19, 2007, Clipse admitted that the band had been officially released from Jive's contract. The duo then began negotiations with several record labels, eventually signing a contract with Columbia Records on October 26, 2007. A sequel to Hell Hath No Fury titled Til the Casket Drops was released on December 8, 2009 on Columbia Records. In a departure from the band's previous work, which included only production from Neptunes, the album includes production from Sean Diddy Combs' production team Hitmen, and DJ Khalil among others. The album is not as good commercially as the band's first two albums, peaking at No. 41 on the billboard 200 album chart. 2010-present: Solo Career and Hear Ye Him In April 2010, No Malice announced that he and Pusha T would release solo albums later this year, and that they were no longer signed with Columbia Records. In 2011, Malis published his book, Unhappy, Miserable, Poor, Blind and Naked, a memoir about his life, including his fear of AIDS infection, and his conversion to Christianity. On March 6, 2012, he announced that he had changed his name from Malice to No Malice. In a video posted on Twitter announcing the change, No Malice is linked to a video that shows him entering the funeral parlour in a bow shirt and tie, looking at himself in a coffin before shaking his head and walking away. The video, which was sent by No Malice, begins with a few quotations from the Bible: first, from the ephesus of 4:31, let all the bitterness and anger and noise and slander be taken away from you, along with all the malice; Then, from 1 Peter 2:1, Before putting aside all malice, and all guile, hypocrisy, and envious, and all evil speeches; and the Romans 1:29, Be filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, greedy, malevolence; full of envy, murder, debate, deception, malignancy; Whispering; and the Colossus 3:8, But now you must put them all away: anger, anger, malice, slander, and obscene conversations from the mouth. In 2012, No Malis collaborated with Lecris on the mixtape Church Clothes on Darkest Hour. On June 19, 2012, No Malice released their first single from Hear Ye Him, titled June, featuring Eric David. On July 24, 2012, a second single from Hear Ye Him was released under the title Unforgettable. On January 15, 2013, a third single from Hear Ye Him was released titled Smoke and Mirrors featuring Ab-Liva. On May 21, 2013, it was announced that his debut album Hear Ye Him would be released on July 2, 2013, but the album was later pushed back. On June 4, 2013, a fourth single from Hear Ye Him was released titled Bury That. On August 18, 2017, No Malice released his second studio album Let the Dead Bury the Dead, which contains the track Fake News, where No Malice condemns his previous work, saying Take my catalog, I just as soon set a match to it / Money like a side chick, I ain't that attached to it. On July 6, 2018, his single Give 'Em Game was released. A reviewer for Jam The Hype wrote, No malice spits eternal bars from which listeners will receive wisdom. He and his brother performed as a guest on the track Use This Gospel on Kanye West's 2019 album Jesus Is King.
