The type and color of dress is indicative of individual academic achievement in the various fields of scholastic endeavor. In order for the audience to better appreciate and understand the pagentry of color, the following information is presented. In 1894, the Intercollegiate Commission, comprised of leading American educators, drafted a code to regulate the design of gowns and hoods that might be worn to identify the wearer and show, uniformly, evidence of scholastic achievement. This Inter collegiate Code has been adopted by the majority of colleges and universities in the United States. The colors of the tassels on the caps worn by the students represent the Colleg es of the University from which the candi date is being graduated. • Utah Governor's Correspondence Research Guide
Utah Governor's Correspondence Research Guide This research guide was created to facilitate student research during the 2020-2021 academic year National History Day celebration. In 2020-2021 students were asked to explore topics relating to the theme Communication in History: The Key to Understanding. This theme asks students to consider how people exchange information and interact with each other. Students have the chance to explore how the methods and modes of communication have changed over time and how they have shaped the present. There are few records held by the Utah Division of Archives and Records Service (State Archives) that illustrate the power and importance of communication like the correspondence sent and received by Utah’s governors. As the chief executive of the State, the governor directly engages with issues of both local and national importance. They serve as the representative for the state on a wide range of issues. The governor’s office has routinely proven to be a place where citizens engage with their government. This ongoing information exchange is foundational to the historic record as it provides unique, often personal, insights into key historical moments and circumstances. As the permanent repository for Utah’s government records, the State Archives holds the correspondence generated by Utah’s governors in public trust. These records are available for research and access through its Research Center. This research guide intends to bring together the correspondence from the various administrations of Utah’s governors into a central location that will help with research. Descriptions of each correspondence record set are provided.

  • HISTORY of Wasatch County
A HISTORY OF = 'Wasatch County Jessie L. Embry UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF Wasatch County Jessie L. Embry Native Americans used Wasatch County for hunting and gathering activities, but prob ably no permanent settlers lived in the area until the Mormons arrived in 1859. They established communities following Joseph Smith's Plat of the City of Zion. Rather than living on isolated homesteads, they lived in towns and set up their farms surrounding the villages. The harsh weather and distant water sources of the region also encouraged coop eration. The area became known for its dair ies and cattle and sheep industries. But while the towns in Wasatch County started as typical Mormon villages, they have become more dependent on outside eco nomic forces. The state and federal govern ments have developed many of the county's natural resources, but they generally are used outside the area. The county includes much of the Uinta and parts of the Wasatch and Ashley national forests and boasts three res ervoirs: Strawberry (1910), Deer Creek (1946), and Jordanelle (1995); however, the stored water is used elsewhere. Wasatch County's history is the story of a transition from independent Mormon villages to de pendent colonies and bedroom communi ties of larger population centers. The “Restoration” of the Gospel and Church of Jesus Christ 1 The Reformation from the Catholic Church was begun by Martin Luther Wikipedia By Anton von Werner Martin Luther’s reply to the Diet of Worms) “Since your majesty and your lordships desire a simple reply, I will answer without horns or teeth. Unless I am convinced by Scripture and by plain reason (I do not believe in the authority of either popes or councils by themselves, for it is plain that they have often erred and contradicted each other) in those Scriptures that I have presented, for my conscience is captive to the Word of God, I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand; I can do no other. God help me. Amen.” 2 . Martin Luther (1529) by Lucas Cranach the Elder Wikipedia Martin Luther first translated the Bible into German for the people to read and understand 3 William Tyndale Wikipedia Wikipedia If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy who drives the plough to know more of the scriptures than you do. 4 I perceived how that it was impossible to establish the lay people in any truth except the Scripture were plainly laid before their eyes in their mother tongue. • Sometimes spelled Tindall, Tindill, Tyndall; A 16th century scholar and translator who became a leading figure in the Protestant reformism towards the end of his life. He was influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus, who made the Greek New Testament available in Europe, and Martin Luther.

ELECTIONS IN THE STATE OF UTAH 1952 Election With Dwight D. Eisenhower leading the Republican party ticket, for the first time since Herbert Hoover and the 1928 election a majority of Utahns voted for the Republican candidate. The retired World War II Supreme Commander received 194,190 voted to 135,364 for Adlai M. Stevenson. With over 58 percent of the vote, Eisenhower represented a radical shift for Utah, which had given strong support to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman during the previous quarter of a century. However, a shift away from the Democratic party had been evident in 1950 when Republican Wallace Bennett won a victory over the veteran New Dealer Elbert D. Thomas in the Senate contest of that year. In the 1952 Senate race, incumbent Republican Arthur V. Watkins, who in 1946 had beaten the incumbent Democrat Abe Murdock by 101,000 votes to 96,000, defeated Democratic challenger Walter K. Granger by a count of 177,435 votes to 149,598. In the First Congressional District, Douglas Stringfellow, running on his record as a wounded World War II hero, easily defeated Ernest McKay, 76,545 to 49,898. However, before his term was over, Stringfellow confessed to having fabricated much of his war record and resigned just before the 1954 election. In the Second Congressional District, Utah′s first congresswomen, Reva Beck Bosone, was defeated by William A. Dawson, who she had unseated in 1948. Bosone had won by a large vote of 93,770 to 68,693 in 1948; she was defeated by Dawson in 1952 by a vote of 105,296 to 95,084.
