The Ecological Footprint Emerged As a Response to the Challenge of Sustainable Development, Which Aims at Securing Everybody's Well-Being Within Planetary Constraints
16 Ecological Footprint accounts The Ecological Footprint emerged as a response to the challenge of sustainable development, which aims at securing everybody's well-being within planetary constraints. It sharpens sustainable development efforts by offering a metric for this challenge’s core condition: keeping the human metabolism within the means of what the planet can renew. Therefore, Ecological Footprint accounting seeks to answer one particular question: How much of the biosphere’s (or any region’s) regenerative capacity does any human activity demand? The condition of keeping humanity’s material demands within the amount the planet can renew is a minimum requirement for sustainability. While human demands can exceed what the planet renew s for some time, exceeding it leads inevitably to (unsustainable) depletion of nature’s stocks. Such depletion can only be maintained temporarily. B), No. 2, 191-211, 1988 The Agricultural Development of Hill Stations in Tropical Asia -A Case Study in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia- Shigeru SHIRASAKA* There are many highland settlements known as "hill stations" or "summer resorts" in Southeast Asian countries under the tropical and subtropical climate. The hill station is not a native institution, but one developed during the nineteenth century by the British and Dutch colonial masters in order to make sojourns in a foreign land more comfortable. In southern Japan, the worst period is from June through August, though its intensity does not compare with that farther south. In Malaysia and Indonesia, the period extends throughout the year. The Cameron Highlands is the most famous hill station in Peninsular Malaysia being one of colonial origin. The Cameron Highlands is located between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above sea level on the main range of central Malaysia. Today, the Cameron Highlands is mainly a summer resort, but it is also a very important mid-latitude vegetable growing area. The development of the Cameron Highlands began only after 1926, though it was discovered by, and named after, William CAMERONin 1885. Almost simultaneous with the opening of the Came ron Highlands as a hill resort was the growth and development of vegetable farming by farmers of Chinese origin. There are also three new vegetable farming settlements developed after World War II. Some 47 per cent of the inhabitants of the Cameron Highlands are Chinese Malaysian, and they shoulder the vegetable growing business. -

Nowadays, growing public awareness of the necessity for the conservation and protection of geological and geomorphological features and play an important role in our ecosystem. This study is to propose Kenong as a future of Geoparks. The objectives of study are to promote geological heritage to the public as well as to support sustainable economic development of the area through the development of geological tourism. Qualitative methods are use in collecting data and the instrument used is observations. The main findings are Geofeatures inventory and issues, concerns and opportunities based on the parameter. Kenong has the characteristics which are a Geopark has to encompass a particular geological heritage, with specific geological and geomorphological features. Both of them are important in terms of their scientific quality, rarity, aesthetic appeal or educational value. Keywords: Geopark, Heritage, Geoscience education, Sustainable development 1. JEJAK WARISAN PAHANG PENCETUS TAMADUN PEMBANGUNAN MODAL INSAN HOLISTIK 1 Abd Jalil Borham [email protected] 1.0 Pendahuluan Menoleh ke belakang, melihat, menghimbau atau menjejaki sejarah adalah satu langkah bijak bagi memahami perkembangan lepas untuk diambil sebagai teladan dan sempadan. Membetul, melurus, dan meneguhkan segala apa yang wajar demi masa depan sesebuah bangsa dan negara. Sejarah memberi iktibar kepada masyarakat sejagat, kerana adanya hari ini membuktikan adanya semalam, dan adanya akan datang kerana adanya hari ini. Sememangnya tidak akan rugi jika sekali-kali menoleh ke belakang melihat masa lalu, merenungi zaman silam; apatah lagi melihat dan merenung untuk menimba pengalamannya. Sesebuah negara dan bangsa yang besar dan berdaulat memang mempunyai sejarah hebat bangsa dan negaranya. Namun begitu kehebatan sejarah bangsa dan negara itu tidak memberi sebarang makna dan erti jika negara dan bangsanya tidak mengambil peduli daripada pengalaman sejarah tersebut. Oleh itu sebagai bangsa yang berdaulat, tiap-tiap seorang daripadanya berkewajiban mengetahui sejarah, menghayati dan mengambil teladan serta iktibar daripada sejarah, lebih-lebih lagi sejarah negara sendiri. Melihat peri pentingnya sejarah negara ini dihayati, maka kertas kerja yang bertajuk “Jejak Warisan Negeri Pahang Darul Makmur” akan menyelusuri sejarah Pahang sejak awal dan seterusnya berusaha memasukkan Pahang dalam peta warisan dunia UNESCO. 2.0 Sejarah Pahang Sejarah Pahang bermula sebelum didirikan kerajaan Melayu Melaka, wilayah bahagian selatan Semenanjung Tanah Melayu semuanya termasuk dalam kawasan kerajaan Pahang. Orang Jawa Majapahit zaman dahulu menyebut Semenanjung Tanah Melayu sebagai Pahang sahaja. Pada awal kurun ke 16 Masihi, pada permulaan terdirinya kerajaan Melayu Johor, sempadan Pahang; di sebelahnya sampai ke Sedili Besar dan di utara sampai ke Terengganu; sempadan ke baratnya pula sampai ke Rembau, Selangor dan Perak. -
